You know I feel strongly that everyone should wear what they FEEL best in and that your style should be a source of confidence and strength. But I also think learning the basics of your style - like your body's proportions- will help you learn how to dress better.
Your style is a journey, and I think proportionate dressing can help 🥰

Thank you! The mid rise vs high rise has been a battle for me. I'm short so people are like "where high rise. Makes you look taller" instead I look really weird but mid rise always looked good on me and now I know why. I have a short torso so mid rise look like high rise anyway

As a man I actually got a lot of valuable information from this. I've never seen a style video give me something I can do myself to see how proportioned I am, it's always generic descriptions of what they are but its difficult to judge yourself based on that. So thank you very much, it was very helpful!

Yesss ugh thank you!!! It irks me completely how the Kibbe system completely ignores that a person can be tall but appear shorter due to more fleshy limbs but to me that seems to be the most obvious ways of starting to actually ID yourself by body type… Even though I am tall I believe I am a soft gamine because I’m pear shaped and fleshy despite being tall and skinny.

I now know I have a long head, short waisted, rise in proportion, and short legs . 🤣 I wish I had known this sooner, thank you it really helps me understand why some clothing doesn't suit me and how I can maximise and minimise my proportions. I've been struggling with kibbe so much and this might actually be the most helpful video since I realised contrast has more impact on me than following lines. I'm supposed to be some sort of classic because nothing really stands out in my body but I'm way too wide( in bones, all over) to feel balanced with my height. And here, I see that my legs should be something like 2cm longer (so not that much) but that the real unbalance is between my waist and rise. Between my chin and my breast line is one head but between my breast and my waist is much shorter and my rise is much longer. So I'm balanced but unbalanced in the mean time. ^^
@Gabriellearrudadesign
@Gabriellearrudadesign 2 года назад
Yes, while this video is not kibbe-centric, I do think understanding the balance of your unique proportions can help you understand your clothes so much better. Do you feel like you have kibbe width or just a a straighter and/or wider torso? Juxtaposition or elongation in the limbs can also be a gamine trait!
@elisa4620
@elisa4620 9 месяцев назад
I agree that I tend to find these types of videos much more helpful than kibbe ones. Kibbe is useful to understand lines and how clothes fall on the body but it is not clear and can feel limiting. Here it's just understanding proportions and how to play with them. :)

In doing this exercise, I think I finally pinpointed what I've always felt to be disproportionate about me but couldn't put my finger on. I'm short waisted...and short-legged (visually, measurably, and now using this "head" system, in every possible way lol) but something always looked "off" to me and now I know - I have a long(ish) RISE. (and a huge butt because of it lol) this throws everything off and now I know why i look "different'. thanks for helping me figure that out!

Thank you so much! This is the first fashion/clothing video I've seen with technical information backing up the concepts. Though I am a man and the examples of clothing don't really apply to me, I'm sure the fundamentals do. Seriously, I've watched other videos on these concepts, and they are all explained vaguely extremely vaguely. Usually throwing up pictures of influencer fits, without explaining the technique going on behind the decisions. Maybe its because mens fashion is "developing"? Regardless, thank you.

Great video and tips! This exercise confirms what I already suspected - I have a big head 😁 I’m 5’8 (or 7 heads) and always felt like I look short in photos which has confused me a lot since I started looking into personal style. When I crop out my head in the photo I took for this my body looks tall though - if my head would have been 1/8 of me the rest would be proportionate, brb going to try and figure out how to make my head appear shorter haha

Gaby, this was the simple most useful collection of all things proportions, thank you so much!! I realized by taking outfit videos that one of the reasons why I struggle with my proportions is because my chest is big relative to my body, and it just needs more space vertically... so it's not super easy for me to create thirds. Anyway, it's really really useful, now I understand why I like dresses much better than separates!
@destroya522
@destroya522 Год назад
Aha!!! Short torso AND short legs. I am missing a whole head worth of length, proportionately, even with a long rise! Even though I have kibbe width (shoulders measure 5% wider than hips) maybe I look more like a classic because I have no vertical line? I’m thinking to try adding chunky shoes to see if it makes a better line. That got me wondering…if my body is too short for my head, then my head must look proportionally large…and does that give me any gamine quality even though I’m 5’7”? It seems like gamines have relatively large heads. Reading through the comments, a lot of us are reporting the same thing: 7 heads high, short waist, long rise, short legs. Help Gabrielle, what do we need to do?

yes great information that will take some to digest, but so worth it. Interestingly, my head is 8" long and my height is (you guessed it!) 64". While I haven' t broken down the sections to see if one area might be more or less than the 8", it made me think about using actual measurements to achieve the proportional balance. for instance : it is 16" to my waist (say for a tuck-in top), then a skirt that is 24" long (that starts at my waist) should achieve a 2: 3 ratio. (so if you like to sew or need to hem a skirt or dress, you have a great starting point for length). thanks again for sharing this - well done and such a help to make our clothes look the best on our bodies!

Thank you so much for this video. I was struggling with my Kibbie ID I thought I was closest to Dramatic Classic, after watching this video I figured out that I have a shorter vertical line than I look to have and that my arms and legs are slightly shorter than they look. I could instantly see that I am a very typical Theatrical Romantic. I could suddenly relate all my features and body shape and answer the Kibbie test correctly. Thank you for making this clear 👏😀

There is a special kind of pleasant feeling when you discover that you're intuitively doing things quite right already (even if there's room for improvement). The recovering tomboy hiding herself being unflattering clothes has come a long way :) Thank you for this video. 👌I know I'm going the right direction and I have some combinations to test when I can find time for it. I would love it if you could someday make a follow up video, in the same style but about vertical proportions and how to balance them out and play with them. Honestly, I find these types of videos much easier than kibbe ones when it comes to body proportions. It's easier to understand and it accommodates everyone's individual specificity a lot more (IMHO). So again thank you ✨

@@Gabriellearrudadesign I loved it. I learned sooo much. I’ve always known I’m on the short waisted side. But as to my rise, I’m not so sure. What is considered a short rised and long rised person? Does having a short rise automatically mean you’re short waisted, and vice versa? Could this be explained in another video? Also, I’ve been thinking about belts. I quite certain I’m a SN. As I’m also on the bigger chested side, according to the Kibbe system, I should use loose waist emphasis. Looking at pictures of myself, I can see this would be true, because I look twice my size (I’ve never used belts of any kind because I want to de emphasize my boobs). Could you make a video about how to use belts? I’m lost 😩
@Gabriellearrudadesign
@Gabriellearrudadesign 2 года назад
So a short rise would be less than "1" of your heads when you do the exercise. It is possible to be short-waisted and have a shorter rise, but they are just more rare. And they often tend to have a petite look to them because their upper half is small (they are not necessarily short in height, but they appear shorter). So if you are a soft natural and you want loose waist emphasis I wouldn't necessarily suggest going all in on belts. If you're trying to accomplish that diagonal shape I was talking in the video I would look for clothes or seaming that do it for you. Wrap dresses that have those diagonal lines to draw our eye across, or a seamed gentle yoke around your waist that lightly shows it off without squeezing it. You could also try softer fabric belts (even built into the garment) that loosely tie around your waist. And if you do opt for a traditional belt I wouldn't make it a contrasting color- I would go more in line with your outfit's color palette. You want to show off your curve but not strangle your "kibbe width". This type of waist emphasis will also help you de-emphasize your boobs a bit as it won't create a focal line break around your waist.
@inabind416
@inabind416 2 года назад
@@Gabriellearrudadesign Omg, I only just noticed your reply, a month later (🙄). All your suggestions make perfect sense, never thought about them, especially trying softer fabric belts instead of regular stiff belts. I think I’ll try them in a narrow width, on account of my short waisted-ness. Now, all I need is a breast reduction 😁

So I'm: Head to Torso: Less than 8 heads (head is long) Upper Torso: Less than 2 heads (short waisted) Rise: 1 head (in proportion, just a touch longer than 1) Legs: Nearly 3 heads (short-legged) I have no idea what to do with this information but I feel like it's a good start?! Will have to rewatch the video. I am going to assume mid-rise trousers are a good bet. I think my problem with the golden ratio is that I have a very big bust, so unless I minimise it (usually black top, focus the colour or pattern on trousers), it throws off the whole look if the colour/focal point is there. Edit: Also I think this makes more sense of my Kibbe journey so far, where I thought I was SN but am probably a hardcore R (short vertical line is very clear now), but I have Dramatic/Classic/Romantic Kitchener essence, which becomes clearer to me when I see the length of my head in comparison to my body

I'm only 7 heads, so everything in me is short except the rise. It's funny, but even with a longer head people see me and think I'm taller than I really am, but in some way there is a "cute vibe", I guess it's because of my wider bones (natural kibbe). I think I look amazing in jumpsuits and mid loose skirts, like the floral one you were on the video, probably because it blurs where my waist ends and my legs start. In my case, I'm a bit short-waisted but also a bit long-legged but in a way that the length of my legs balances the shortness of my waist perfectly so I end up being exactly 8 heads tall. Would that be a moderate vertical?

Question- I have a lot of dresses that are solid color and long, and don’t often split up the length visually with a crop jacket or something else; occasionally I’ll use a belt but most of them are already fitted at the waist. A lot of the examples here show how to pair things together but what does that mean for the impact of a solid colored piece? You kind of touched on this in the denim example but I’m super curious for other examples or if anyone here in the comments has any insight that’d be greatly appreciated!

Hai Gabrielle, I just wanted to say that I love your videos and all the effort you put into them to actually show the theory in practise. I think Ive already made so much better outfits just this week because of your videos on style essences. But I want to remark that I dont think the 8 heads theory makes any sense. Ive been measuring pictures of very vertical celebrities and their legs are still too short to make up 4 heads. (Head = 100%; % upper body (without head); % lower body) Keira Knightley: 107%; 78%. Claudia Schiffer: 103%; 95%. Tilda Swinton: 94%; 82%. (If anyones legs would measure 4 heads they would have 100% on the second score). So to say 4 heads is in proportions (= average?) makes no sense to me. I would like to hear your thoughts on this. Now I will continue to binge your videos. Please keep them coming. :D Love for the Netherlands. Groetjes, Eline

This is putting so much into perspective for me it's insane. I'm tall and despite my head being in proportion i have a shortish waist, long rise and short legs 😅 for someone with these proportions how would a jean short work? Ive been wearing high waisted 'festival' shorts but wonder if i should be going for a lower rise?

So I'm all short (7 heads), short waisted, short legged, and have long rise. My everything is a bit higher up than the ideal, and it stacks. Second head hits above the mid bust, so I had to measure again separately for the legs because the third head hits above my hips and the fourth is already in my thighs 😂

Ok so if my legs& rise are in proportion (4heads, 1head respectively) but waist to chin less than 2heads (a bit more than 1 1/1) what does that mean? Does that still pass as evenly proportional? Or „slightly shirt torso“ with „normal lenght legs“? Does a short torso automatically mean long legs? I’m also not 8 legs long, only 7 and 1/2 (but 173cm aka 5ft8inch) tall… 🤔 does that make me „short limbs and even shorter torso“? 😅

I have a question and I don’t know if you already answered this but what if your head is big so your overall body is less than 8 heads and the rest is short by definition because your head is bigger to every other part of body. Should we calculate with something else or everything has to compare to the head. I really don’t if this is clear.

@@FaithinHim that’s a good place to start- I’m glad that video helped. Maybe start playing with implementing that info and taking pics of your outfits. I’ll try to think of ways to further clarify this- but there will be more videos along the lines of styling clothes too! This proportion with the head only works for an average size person. Many shorter people have heads of similar-same size as someone much taller so their proportions will never be in the same sync as this taller person. (If you use the head as the guideline)

Question: how can a low or mid rise hit above your natural waist if you have a short waist and a long rise? That seems not possible. Not that I don't like mid rises, I love them, especially if they hit me just below my belly button (which is a higher midrise in my case usually, since most mid rises look low rise on me), but a mid rise could never ever ever hit me just below my ribcage (since this is where my natural waist is), I'd need a ribcage rise for that (which isnt comfortable to breathe at all, so not doing that haha)
@Gabriellearrudadesign
@Gabriellearrudadesign 2 года назад
Are you referring to the "short-waisted" section where I recommend a lower/mid rise pant? So that's only focusing on having a short waist, not a short waist and a long rise. Because it is possible to have a short waist and a short rise. If you have a short waist and a long rise then you want to optically lengthen your waist by going for a lower rise pant.. So a mid rise (under your belly button) would work or a low rise pant would work because its giving more visual space to upper half and your extending your upper torso area visually. If you have a long rise and short waist you most likely won't find pants that naturally hit above your waist unless you go for those super high rises (like ribcage). You could also try measuring your rise on your body and looking up the rise dimensions on the pants (they are usually listed in the fit area). Rises are usually between 7 inches and 12 inches, so you'd be looking for something in the 10 in plus if you don't want to extend your waist and just want to further emphasize your longer rise. But measuring your own rise and where you want it to be will be the most accurate. Does this make sense and/or answer your question?
@Allesea159
@Allesea159 2 года назад
@@Gabriellearrudadesign yes thanks! Im wondering if its possible to have pants with a low or mid rise that is above ones natural waist even with a short rise tho. Itd have to be reaaaaly short 😬
@Gabriellearrudadesign
@Gabriellearrudadesign 2 года назад
@@Allesea159 so a person whose body has a short rise- who wears low/mid rise pants- can those pants be above their natural waist? Theoretically, yes. “Low” And “mid” rises in pants changes from brand to brand to what it’s defined as. So if a petit person with a long waist/short rise bought mid rise pants- they could hit above that persons natural waist.

Ok, so I made the proportions thing and I’m shooked. I’ve always though I had long legs, but actually it seems like I have SHORT legs?? 🤯 Like… my legs have 3 heads in length. I have short waist, regular rise and short legs. Also, my head is hella big lol even being 175cm (5ft8) in height, my body is only 6,5 heads. My combination of attributes is short torso, short legs and big head 😂 I thought I had a long vertical line, but I think I’m just… tall? 🤷🏻‍♀️ Or maybe my long arms are giving me the long vertical “vibe”. Because they’re hella long, almost as long as my legs, like… 2,8 heads.

Help! I’m having a moment. I’m only 7 heads high! I’m missing a whole head! ??????? Yet I’m tall - 6 feet tall. From my picture, I think I’m short waisted, long rise, and I have 4 head lengths from the top of my head to my crotch/leg break. But from the crotch down is only 3 head lengths. My legs aren’t short - as in I need to buy tall (let’s say 34 inch for full length) pants. Did I do something wrong in the exercise? I’m struggling hitting the right proportions with clothing, but now I’m not sure I belong on this planet!
@Gabriellearrudadesign
@Gabriellearrudadesign Год назад
So that long rise could be throwing off your interpretation a bit. It's possible to be 7 heads high, especially if you are tall and have a longer head (potentially ethereal essence if you are into style essences). I think you should experiment with the golden ratio and maybe take photos and see if you're hitting those proportions or if your longer rise/shorter waist is throwing off your outfits balance at times
