So here's my collection of menswear-inspired outfits for all 10 kibbe IDs. Obviously, these are just inspirations to get you started, but hopefully, these androgynous styles will help give you a good jumping-off point.
Note- the head-to-toe outfit is most important, so don't feel boxed in by any style suggestions!
The vest I continually wore in my video ;)

I think Romantics struggle so much, not only to shop menswear-inspired styles, but even the more gender-neutral fashions that have been popular in womenswear these past couple of decades. There are a couple of companies catering to trans or nonbinary people with curvier bodies looking for more menswear-inspired styles, but R and TR types in general have SUCH a hard time finding items that fit and flatter. I like the looks you came up with for TR and R, but I think they might look off on someone with a lot of yin unless there was a LOT of tailoring involved.
@Gabriellearrudadesign
@Gabriellearrudadesign 2 года назад
Yes, gender-neutral fashion usually lends itself to boxier cuts, but not always. I personally look at kibbe as more of a spectrum, even two ppl within the same ID may have to accommodate a trait more depending on how prominent it is. Some FN's have a lot of width that dissuades them from wearing silhouettes that hug their torso, whereas others just need to keep the fabric in mind and an open neckline in tact. For TR's they might have a little easier time since they have very delicate frames and have that touch of yang. For romantics who want to try menswear I would just say keep your waist emphasis in mind and let your curves breathe. The proportion of each outfit though would definitely depend on each individual.
@kris.........
@kris......... 2 года назад
Hard agreed. Also hard for nonbinary TR and R types who don't want to show skin at all but want to flatter shape.

one way to gain inspo for menswear and kibbe-appropriate fashion could also be to identify male celebrities with your ID and analyze what they're doing with their style + how it works. for example, soft gamines can look towards daniel radcliffe, elijah wood, fred astaire, bruno mars, gerard way, etc... i know jimin from BTS is typed as a romantic. the point is: male celebrities have kibbe IDs too! investigate that! also you're so funny 😭 i loved that kill bill intro LMAO your deep love for fashion really shines here! this is a really good intro for everyone wanting to explore this side of fashion. thank you for making this video 💗

I’m a romantic and I am so mad I can’t wear menswear very easily- I loveee it, but I end up looking like a slob - the best I get is a big button down as a dress with a belt to cinch the waist so thanks for this.

Maybe a tight sweater vest over a button up with some looser belted trousers could be cute? I feel like that could be cute with the soft curve of a romantics frame

Try looking for inspiration in historical menswear. Off the top of my head look at Thomas Jefferson's costume in Hamilton. He wears a dark redish purply velvet suit with 2 different jackets. One with pretty long tails that almost act as a train at times and another shorter and more practical. Maybe looking for menswear inspired pieces in fabrics like velvet and brocade or jackets with tails instead of more modern hemlines.

I really appreciate your talking about the two schools of thought (dressing with your lines or "against them" as rebellion). I'm an nb soft dramatic who has had top surgery which obviously impacted my lines somewhat. I'm new to the kibbe community, but I've noticed some strictness and haven't seen someone talk about the merits of dressing against one's lines for a personal style purpose. this gives me the confidence to go with my gut instinct, which was to borrow some from FN to align more with my gender identity, while considering a lot of the SD recs (soft fabrics, t shape, etc.)
@Androgynary
@Androgynary 2 года назад
This video is totally up my alley! I’m trans non-binary & don’t dress in a “conventionally attractive” way, but I still like applying Kibbe principles to my outfits. I find that dressing androgynous is really seamless as a Flamboyant Gamin bc line breaking doesn’t have to reference any particular gender. One thing I like to do as someone that accommodates petite is to go into the women’s section of the thrift store and look for menswear-looking clothing (like button ups & trousers) bc you’ll find “masc” pieces that actually fit your proportions!
@Gabriellearrudadesign
@Gabriellearrudadesign 2 года назад
That's a great tip too! I love the flamboyant gamine lines, I think they fit menswear and androgynous styles really well. (and imo "conventionally attractive" is an ever changing concept and not worth even paying attention to). Dress for yourself, and what you feel good in!

Hi! I’ve recently gotten into the university, and I was lost in my personal styles because honestly, I’ve been wearing same hoodie and baggie pants through the entire senior year. My mom and friends told me that I should buy some new clothes and start to dress like an ^adult^, so I googled about these themes, and I found you. You’re such a inspiring person and I really love your confidence and spunky attitude. As many people said, your channel and website is seriously underrated! I’ve been wandering a lot of fashion websites, and no other websites are better than yours. Your paraphrasing ability is absolutely fabulous, and your editing skills are on the top! After reading your posts, I’ve verified myself as a Soft Classic, Cool Winter, and Classic Essence with a little bit of Dramatic essence. Now I know what clothes to buy, and I’m not afraid to go shopping anymore. Please keep up the good work! Thanks for guiding my personal style journey ❤

I’m fascinated by the topic you brought up about wearing menswear to go against your Kibbe ID. I would love if you made a video exploring why some people intentionally seek out antagonistic lines (after going through the efforts of finding their IDs). What effects could be best created going against the recommendations for the types without looking disheveled? How do types create an alternative/juxtaposed look? How does each type create a “put together” edgy or dissonant outfit? Really loved this video and appreciate the thought that went into its creation!

i LOVE this video! my body is on the curvier side and i think i fall into the SN category (SG, TR, and R have also been IDs i’ve considered). my body and face shape have always made me look pretty femme regardless of how i dress- i could be wearing clothes from the men’s section head-to-toe and i’d still be read as being on the femme side of things. i also hate how a lot of menswear looks fall on me because of my hips! it’s amazing to see menswear inspired looks that aren’t meant for people with narrow hips or thin dramatics. i definitely want to see more videos on incorporating menswear inspired looks into your wardrobe for folks with various body shapes!
@Gabriellearrudadesign
@Gabriellearrudadesign 2 года назад
I will keep this in mind! I think the benefit of kibbe is looking at your body and your clothes and understanding how to match them or juxtapose them when you want. I think SN can look fantastic in menswear. 🥰👍🏻

I’m a recent subscriber, and I would love to see more videos like this!! I know I’m not the only one when I say I get tired of the ways Kibbe IDs get boxed into just o n e style (like Romantics can’t have a boho sense of style, or Gamines can’t have a traditional style of dress, etc). I know you’ve probably got ideas for videos in the works anyway, but if at all possible I think that would be a cool series to show that you really can wear whatever look you want *and* take Kibbe guidelines into consideration!
@Gabriellearrudadesign
@Gabriellearrudadesign 2 года назад
I totally think you can wear whatever you want, and that kibbe should just be on tool in your style toolbox. I'll try to think of more ways to show this! And for what its worth I think Kibbe himself is coming out with a new book and he has said himself he never wanted to box people in.

Thank you! My project of the last couple years has been to refine my wardrobe and make it more cohesive. The kibbe system is an interesting tool, but as someone who likes to dress in alt fashion, I find a lot of the style guides for kibbe are pretty hum drum. I don't think I need a specific [insert alt-fashion] kibbe style guide for every style. By removing some of the gendered wording around the style recommendation and talking about why and how we achieve lines and sillhouettes is much more useful and can be applied to a broader range of styles.

I find your stuff really interesting! I'm a very short (4'10"), pretty fat (205lbs, size 20-22 jeans) person, and my gender, while I was assigned female at birth, is best described as "I don't know, whatever Led Zeppelin was doing in the 70s I guess," so modern fashion is...difficult...for me. Would you be interested in doing something for someone like me, whose concerns outside of Kibbe/Kitchener can sometimes create not-insignificant gender dysphoria when paired with the gendered vibes of the yin/yang dichotomy all of these systems are based on? I'm reasonably sure I'm a Kibbe romantic with a Kitchener natural/ingenue/gamine blend, and I can't stand anything too Little Girl or Femme Fatale; the femininity I enjoy is what looks androgynous/femme on 70s rockstars, and essentially whatever Gerard Way is currently doing. I'd also love to actually hire you for a personal consultation but I don't want to be Weird About It.

I, for example, am a self-quizzed SC who is ok with this, but I usualy look for the softer side of the type and I'm often drawn to SG and R styles, so for me there is a difference, and I'm sure there are D/N who likes to wear feminine clothes and struggle.

your fashion history lesson in the beginning was amazing! i care more about fashion history than the concept of clothes being “flattering”. i find that a lot of people who are into kibbe use the word “flattering” as if it’s a factual, objective term, rather than something that’s shaped by ever-changing cultural beauty ideals. queer culture exists and -shocker- a lot of people find masculine women to be extremely attractive

Is it just me or do the Soft Natural styling lines look super unflattering and dowdy 😢. In the jeans video too. This SN just can’t with mom jeans or gathered pants…makes the belly area look like a round ball and we already have a lot of width. I totally respect and appreciate Gabrielle’s videos and I get that she’s trying to makes a point. I’d love to see some other options. Okay - a week and 9678 photos later I have to concede - mom jeans DO look best. AHHH!!!!! Gabrielle is genius. Lesson: throw out your biases and at least try the recommendations 😮 When I look at my photos as objectively as I can, I don’t see dowdy, I see a better look. Maybe they just looked the way in the vid because they’re not her lines???

Personally, a never found the double-breasted jackets to be very flattering as SC, no matter what fabric they are in. I tend to avoid them altogether. Single-breasted jackets with a higher collar tend to look better. I'd love to know if any other SC have had the same experience or is it just a me thing?
@Gabriellearrudadesign
@Gabriellearrudadesign 2 года назад
I think it depends on a lot of factors including your own yin balance. That jacket has basically no structure and the lapel is a shawl collar which makes it a lot of softer than a traditional double breasted jacket. And I think adding menswear items always adds a bit more juxtaposition to a yin IDs look. But that’s an interesting idea- I’d love to hear from more SCs on it👍🏻

@@Gabriellearrudadesign I've had a ponder and concluded that the silhouette were just to boxy for me. I need more waist emphasis a closer fit.

I didn't include this, because most of these pieces are older or vintage/thrifted. But I will consider trying to add it in the future. The vest I wore in almost all the IDs is linked because I literally bought it for this video lol

I think I'm a SG but I always feel so ugly on puff sleeves outfits. I loved SG look 2, but I feel like I could never pull out the soft puff sleeves of look 1 :( I wonder if any other SG feels it too

Thank you! I've been wanting to see more androgyny and female "menswear" and "men's" fashion ideas so this was helpful. And if you made a version of this video about the Kitchener essences I'd be thrilled! Also I found every outfit in this video looked beautiful and there was a playful quality throughout too.

I think curvy FNs share some silhouettes with SDs but ultimately FNs have different accommodations (vertical and width).

It's not that I want to integrate menswear-like clothing. Is that I want 10 slightly fitted regular length black jeans, 15 non-iron shirts, a few differents tops to allow a bit of variety. As well as vests and ties for when I need to be more formal and dress everyday the same, like a cartoon character.

Ok, so I'm a soft classic and i hate literally everything about my body type. I came to this video hoping to find some way of playing into an agender look but unsurprisingly all i got was 1950's woman. I'm really starting to resent my body type. It just seems to Pidgeon hole me into the most bland feminine looks which is literally the opposite of who i am. On top of that I'm a deep autumn so I cant even play with colours because the only things that look good on me are rich darks. I'm so painfully bored by everything i find out about my ID. but I look AWFUL in anything outside these parameters.
@Gabriellearrudadesign
@Gabriellearrudadesign 2 года назад
Hmm I’m sorry you felt this way. I don’t think either of those looks would have been 1950s woman if you study fashion history. That being said, you can certainly add more menswear inspiration by making the silhouettes boxier. All you’d really have to keep in mind that your waist is somewhat visible and you don’t overdo it with the details. As I explained in the beginning part of the video, there are two ways to use the menswear in a look, perhaps you’re seeking to add some juxtaposition instead of meshing with your ID.

So….corsets and stays before generally did not hinder movement….they basically functioned as bras and were supposed to be comfortable. Think of the vast majority of poor women who did all kinds of manual labor (from farming to housework). All of them wore corsets…
@Gabriellearrudadesign
@Gabriellearrudadesign Год назад
I’m aware of the history of corsets and that they were staple undergarment for decades but there was also a transition to more comfortable clothes eventually- Is that what you’re referencing?

Can we stop it with the misogynist idea that menswear is androgynous? Menswear is masculine. Androgynous is neither masculine nor feminine. Unless a man wearing menswear is also androgynous (which I think we can all agree it isn't), then a woman wearing menswear isn't androgynous, either.
@Gabriellearrudadesign

I think I cover this exactly in the video and specify this would actually be considered menswear outfits for me (female) and not androgynous
