I always loved Ethel's expression more because she knows good and well he's not pulling off the accent and he still had the gall to try it and Fred looks like he's hoping no one will notice.
When Lucy chimed in at the very end, she did it in key, fun times....I love watching old Lucy episodes, one of these days I need to get out to their museum in Jamestown NY.
I'm not a big Lucy fan but I seen funnier moments. I have to name two favorite episodes it would be the birth of Little Rickey and the Bull Fight Dance
Love how Ricky,Fred and Ethel sing this song really beautiful harmony- one of the great things about I love Lucy, is hearing these songs that aren't regularly played anywhere.
Just as funny is Desi's pitch-perfect and heavily accented tenor. Many years ago I was treated to the performance of a Japanese barbershop quartet. Bless 'em all, they got the harmony right...
Hahaha! The looks Ethel and Fred give Ricky when he tries to do his Irish accent. Then, Lucy had make the scene even more hilarious with her "beautiful" singing.
I been looking for this clip! I remember crackin up as a kid over this part in the show. Grandma used to watch the reruns I wish more ppl from my age group would appreciate good clean comedy
I read in a book on I Love Lucy that this episode was taped on Friday, October 17, 1952 (the day I was born; as they taped at 5 p.m., the book said, I was about three hours old). So this show has special meaning at least for me. With classic comedy such as this, for many others as well.
@@julietteyork3721 Let's see. I'm 68. Checks out so far. 5 p.m. PST = 8 p.m. EST. I was born at 5:42 p.m. EST, so assuming the taping lasted an hour, maybe less, close to that 3-hour-old mark ... Math works for me. I know: Obviously they didn't teach math at my school!
Something exists here that has been lost in translation. TALENT !! This used to be a prerequisite for fame. Now it is a roadblock to fame. It's amazing because Desi was the first real corporate mogul in television. Now television is run by corporate know nothings. Well they do know how to advertise & brainwash & to be formulaic. Because of this we will never again have talent like this grace our screens. We will have to go to Broadway & the like to find it.
LOL - Mi - Darling...what a classic... @ 1:41 - Niiiiiice @ 1:57 - I truly believe that somehow he always wanted to do that just because... One of the most memorable skit...
Desi Viv and Bill had fantastic voices I'm pretty sure Lucy had a decent voice but she always pretended not to be able to sing on the show I've heard her sing in other circumstances where it wasn't bad but it still makes it funny.
In the evening when I sit alone a-dreaming Of days gone by, love, to me so dear, There's a picture that in fancy oft' appearing, Brings back the time, love, when you were near. It is then I wonder where you are, my darling, And if your heart to me is still the same. For the sighing wind and nightingale a-singing Are breathing only your own sweet name. Sweet Adeline,
I doubt whether Henry Higgins himself could come up with a phonetic term for Ricky's attempt at 0:42 to sound Irish! A great skit. I always get the unsettling feeling that Bill Frawley's murderous look after Lucy pushes the pestle in his face wasn't acting.
One of the things about this show that grates on me is how Lucille Ball COULD actually sing but they make her play a tone deaf and talentless wannabe. I guess it's just one of my weird issues but letting a talented singer/performer ham it up every now and then is fine, but to make it their character and only let them rarely display their talent just infuriates me.
