This is two parts of two different episodes. In the first one, Lucy dips a dill pickle into a papaya milkshake, in the second, she pours sardines and hot fudge on pistachio ice cream. I do NOT own any of the rights to this video.
Did you see how he sat in the bed beside her? He left one leg off the bed, that was another regulation requirement. If a couple was in a bed together, there had to be at least one foot in the floor.
I wish they still sold pickles individually from the jar or barrel. Sometimes you get the whole jar and it's too much garlic or not sour enough or too much dill.
Uhm. Here in Ohio, US, you can find individual pickles literally everywhere, grocery stores usually have a lot more variety, or deli counters and corner stores will have dill and spicy. It was a favorite snack of mine when I was younger lol.
+Brooke Hanley You are right I meant to include that term as well. I am approaching my 50th b-day in a few weeks ,and growing up I can clearly recall my mother and aunts using it. America's favorite bigot, Archie Bunker ,once said that "only bad girls get pregnant , respectable married women are either 'expecting' or in the 'family way' ." Lol.
For those of you who are throwing up at the sight of Lucy eating Pistachio ice cream with hot fudge and SARDINES!! Ugh!! It was actually Mashed Potatoes and Gravy. But it was real sardines which seemed to be a better pairing. I however, think that the Papaya Milk Shake sounds good with the Dill Pickle....
I kind of want one now, lol. But we don't have a Jamba Juice here. We have a restaurant here called Cheeburger Cheeburger and they have many different flavors that you can even mix and match. They have about 64 locations across the country. And you name it it's probably a flavor of shake. =P Sadly, Papaya isn't one of them. They do have flavors such as Chocolate Covered Pretzel, Mango, Pineapple, Root Beer, Strawberry Kiwi, Apple Pie, Birthday cake . . . and many more. A pizza place I went to even had Wedding Cake flavored. lol.
***** I read that it was actually mashed potatoes and gravy. The hot lights from the set would've melted the ice cream too fast. Ball herself said she never wanted to eat sardines again.
Stephen R Yes, I saw in an interview where Lucy explains that in order to make it easier for her to eat to sardines she asked for mashed potatoes with gravy.
I'm 25 weeks pregnant and this is currently my life. My sweetheart is so good to me with these cravings. This is a perfect example of us right now. I laughed so hard. Thank you for this deep laugh!!
he probably had just returned home from his gig at the Tropicana night club, which was usually around 3am when he would get home.. she tagged him as soon as he walked in the door and sent him out to get all that stuff.
the title of this should be "i love lucy - expecting cravings" just because they were never allowed to use the word "pregnant" on TV by the censors lol
I once at a bologna sandwich with mayo, peanut butter and red onions while I was pregnant with my daughter. Another time I was hospitalized for dehydration during the pregnancy n I called my dad to bring me a bag of white grapes to the hospital. The one thing that I would eat almost every night during my pregnancy was nachos, with the cheese freshly made. And I mean every night.
@@Deborahtunes mine was just chocolate. Anytime I didn't feel like I was gonna puke, I'd eat ass-loads of chocolate anything and those brownies from little Debbie's. My second trimester was during Halloween and I wasn't cautiously waddling everywhere I went yet, so I Trick or Treated and that was absolute heaven for me (as always). The weather was perfect and the haul was plentiful. AGE DOES NOT DISCRIMINATE!
My Mother craved strawberries when expecting my sister & of course that's what she likes..When she was expecting me she was a night nurse...When I became a nurse guess what shift I liked!!!!!!
OKay, Papaya Milkshake: Not bad, Pistachio ice cream, Not bad, Hot fudge on the ice cream: Not bad, but the rest of that combined as she did...Oh I would have tossed my cookies
Fun Fact: The Pistachio ice cream and hot fudge were actually Mashed potatoes and gravy...because it the lights kept melting the ice cream too fast...and Lucille Ball couldn't eat sardines again after this...
On her follow up series The Lucy Show, whenever the kids were supposed to eat oatmeal, it was really applesauce, because of the hot stage lights. And I also think it photographed better. Who knows. I read this on the DVD special features. I love buying cans of sardines and just eating them. Yummy.
My mom craved Pop-tarts when she was pregnant with my brother. Also, my best friend craved guacamole when she was pregnant with her daughter. She also said that she hated guac before she was pregnant. Weird, huh?
Pregnancy changes your tastes sometimes. Years ago, a friend of mine didn't like tuna fish at all. She found it to be really gross. However, when she was pregnant with her daughter, she craved tuna fish sandwiches like you wouldn't believe. Her daughter LOVES tuna fish sandwiches, and that's another thing. Usually, if a pregnant woman craves a certain type of food, their child will go for it later on.
I went through this with my hubby 😂 during my pregnancy days & he battled went into labor pains himself but he still runs my errands for me at weird hours to keep me happy ☺ for anything I may request for ❤
Interestingly they do show them in a single bed (or possibly two twins pushed together) in the earliest episodes. It was pretty much once Lucy got pregnant that the beds were permanently three feet apart. Which was kinda closing the barn door after the horses have fled! Films of the era--from about 1933 to the mid-1960s--were the same way due to the Hayes code. All sorts of rules like this existed to "protect" the innocent public from scandal and immorality (like married people sleeping together, heh). E.g., if a man and woman were seated on a bed, at least one of the man's feet had to be on the floor. The rules did lead to a lot of subtle suggestiveness and creative insinuations, so the Code wasn't necessarily always a bad thing.
Well I feel better that my cravings weren't as extreme as that. The things I craved the most were peanut butter with tuna sandwiches and frozen pizza......thawed out, not cooked. My husband had the same reactions as Ricky did whenever I ate them :)
I'm too plain with cravings for just raw cauliflower. But also specifically McDonald's orange juice. We live in the middle of nowhere and the only store we have out here closes at 10pm, so the worst part of my cravings is just that they kick in at like 11 lol.
My weirdest craving was ice cream and crab cakes, together. But the main thing I wanted through out my pregnancy (& still enjoy now), was chocolate milk. And til this day, my son drinks chocolate milk...
I was just as crazy! Lol! I had cravings for ice cream sandwiches and sardines, in alternating bites, washing it down with an ice cold Pepsi at 3 am every morning! Lol!🤣
I love this episode! I love Lucy! She has never been off the air in the 68 years now she first came. She has been gone 30 years but it more here than ever. Thank you Lucy so much for all the laughter you left behind!!!
A classic from the lovely Lucy! BTW, cravings during pregnancy are very real indeed, although not all of them are quite so weird. I've never been pregnant but my mother said that when she was carrying a Teeny-Weeny Sparkini, she craved tuna sandwiches and vanilla malteds. To this day, I think tuna fish is one of the most revolting foods known to humankind, but that is only my opinion.
I’m expecting my third and having the most cravings I think I ever did….first it was beef and broccoli, then spicy foods, now it’s cinnamon raisin bagels with cream cheese! And Cheese-Its to calm the hungry nausea at work.
I love this clip but the best part of this video are all the comments from moms who have their "craving stories". It's super fun and an ode to moms and dads all round! 💖
This is so funny! I craved oreos and I put some fruit flavored chewable candy in it. I also craved coconut juice but it had to be fresh like I wanted it still inside the coconut.
@@cherisejones9535, Vivian Vance was cool. That's true. Although, she was not in these particular clips at all. Secondly, she wasn't that old, being that she was only 42 when she won the roll of Ethel Mertz on "I Love Lucy."
And i thought i was the only one with silly cravings for food i mix asprin in soda bottle and mint in cold drink Also honey on chocolate and sometimes i eat coffee powder i know it sounds silly
When I was pregnant for my first I craved Hershey’s syrup chocolate milk and green onions ! Still sounds good 49 years later. I also wrecked our black Cadillac because he wouldn’t move fast enough. My sister and I were both pregnant and craving blue cheese dressing. We went out and I scraped the car along a post but we got our salads and blue cheese. Came home and my husband and hers were still talking . Mine said “what was that noise when you left?” I said it was the sky d of blue cheese being craved !!!!
It sad that this seems so normal on tv and all but to find a relationship like this i so hard now a days. And if it exists i only last a while before it goes sour.
This scene honestly makes me wonder if they were referencing that thing that sometimes happens between couples when they’re expecting. That in some cases when the mother-to-be would get cravings/morning sickness, her husband would get cravings/morning sickness as well XD
I craved taco Bell mild sauce with my first child. I told my husband that I wanted a taco with mild sauce and he said "sounds good!! Go get us one!!" Lol
alonzo9772 According to 1950's censor protocol , married couples had to sleep in separate beds this included Ward & June Cleaver, Jim & Margaret Anderson as well as Ozzie & Harriet etc....In the movies a married couple could share the same bed but the man had to have @ least one foot on the floor. By the early 1960's this had changed because Samantha & Darrin Stephens (Bewitched) slept in the same bed & Samantha was indeed PREGNANT with Tabitha & NOT " in the family way." We have no doubt come a long way , reality shows are so distasteful , nothing is sacred anymore. In some ways we need to go back to that sort of protocol. Of course that is my opinion & you can disagree.
Sleeping while pregnant can be uncomfortable. I'm 8 months pregnant and my husband rarely sleeps in the bed with me anymore because I need more room to stretch out, I switch sides a lot, and I've started to snore. Sex is not really a priority either, I'm usually too tired. Plus it's usually uncomfortable now to.
When i was pregnant with my son i couldn't get enought of hardboiled eggs with bananas. And tomatoes smothered in chocolate. My husband would literally gagged while i would eat. 😂😂 good times.. Lol.
I've always wondered if Lucille Ball really had cravings like these during her pregnancies. Most bizarre food combos, for sure !!! But love Lucy anyway !!!
not weird. Do you think people live forevver? Have you ever watched a movie with an actor or actress who had died? They were alive at the time, so it is normal.
