Stop telling medical professionals to just pick up a second job. Fatigue can lead to mistakes and strikes against their licenses. Yes, they are in a mess, but putting themselves and their careers in a potentially dangerous situation isn't always the answer.
@plathiasjenkins1011
@plathiasjenkins1011 2 года назад
Agreed. Picking up a couple of extra shifts is completely reasonable, but if you overextend yourself too much and a patient dies because of a medication error it can destroy your career/life. Getting out of debt quickly isn't worth a multi-million dollar lawsuit, losing your heathcare license, and possible jail time. The risk benefit ratio is not worth it when a path to debt-free life is still completely possible with those incomes.

Sounds like you’re burnt out. If you are I would strongly encourage to change floors/hospitals/ or go part time. I do agree with this statement, but here’s my take. I left my hospital to do travel nursing. I love it now and I’m not burnout. At my other hospital I would NEVER pick up an extra shift or work four in a row. Now that I am at a better job I am now currently looking to see where I could pick up an extra shift every now and again. I’m on step 4/5/6 so I am trying to pay my house of quicker. NURSE LIFE FOR LIFE!
@lindaminor2872
@lindaminor2872 2 года назад
@@Nursemidratz I am a nurse, yes. I never lived beyond my means. The only debt we had was a mortgage. No CC bills ( paid them off every month) student loans or car payments and I still got burned out just working my normal hours. The scary part is that I didn’t recognize burn out until it was almost too late. I also worked with nurses who took all the OT shifts AND had a second job. They were always tired. I not only left that floor, I left the bedside and I am the happiest I’ve ever been. When people are in a financial mess like this couple, their focus will become the money and they may not notice when they are not safe until it’s too late.

I liked John's comment about debt and how old the kids are. It made me think about my parents and how they had debt, albeit it not a ton, until I was in my 30s. I finished paying everything off when my oldest child was six. I don't know for sure but I like to think that my parents saw me do that and jumped on the bandwagon. Now they're 100% done with everything and they've never been prouder or happier. Just goes to show that debt can be a generational practice until someone breaks the chain (aka changing the family tree). Life is good!

Dave needs to quit telling pharmacist to put up extra hours an ER as that takes a pgy1-2 residency. Also picking up extra hours is ok but working like maniacs especially in this environment is unsafe and can put your license at risk. Ask me how I know? I work in high volume retail filling up to 900 per day. With all the shots and test makes work very very stressful. And the amount of errors I see are ridiculous. Putting our license at risk. He doesn’t need to be putting his license at risk like that.

I thought people worried more able this work/life balance myth more. If your finances are in order, Im pretty sure your medical errors at work would be nonexistent. My first question is why does his wife owe 35K on a car when she’s bringing in 50K. I get together they make 200K but how much was that car? That was way too expensive. What if he’s unable to work for whatever reasons.
@appollo1826
@appollo1826 Год назад
I think he said she is pregnant but the car is too expensive for her salary.
@Matt-cr4vv
@Matt-cr4vv Год назад
Because as a married couple you budget for a household and not individual salaries. The car in question as a pregnant spouse is more than likely a van not some luxury sedan. And reliable vans are exactly a cheap vehicle. But let’s throw out the specifics of what the car is or isn’t and focus only on each persons salary. $35K is a lot compared to a $50K salary (again married irs household to me) but let’s just flip the cars around and say he has the $35K car. And let’s say he lost his job. Does that change the actual financial effect in any of this if his income went away simply because he drove the more expensive vehicle? Nope. They’d still be up a creek. So the price of the vehicle compared to the individual wpouse salary really means nill because whoever drives the thing they still need both the incomes.

Most pharmacists in retail work 12 hours shifts, 3-4 days a week. There are contract pharmacists who will come in and cover things like vacations, sick days, etc. That's where this caller can pick up 1-2 days per week. I'm guessing the wife's car is a new minivan. She is not going to give that up nor would I expect her to. Trying to cram three car seats into a sedan becomes a safety issue. Even a lot of the SUVs don't have adequate hard points for the car seat hook ups. Daycare for three kids is going to take nearly half her salary. Basically, she is going to work to pay daycare and the car for the next 3-4 years. No discussion of refinancing options on those student loans. Knocking a few percentage points off the interest rate would save thousands in this case.
@appollo1826
@appollo1826 Год назад
Refinancing? The game is to pay it off, preferably before you have a child. They shouldn't feel comfort about this stupid mistake. You're just making excuses for the mother like most people. This is reason why most people are in debt; Justification.
@Kevin-cf8uu
@Kevin-cf8uu 2 года назад
My guess is they couldn't get a decent mortgage to buy a house and that made them realize the debt problem. It's not even the cars but the student loans. It's also way harder with the kids because kids add a huge amount of cost to a person's life. I doubt they can get out as fast as Dave says but if he works hard and she gets maybe a job she can do from home that pays better they can definitely make it work. Agree though it won't be easy.

This is like saying a lawyer should know everything a doctor knows about medicine. Both are intelligent people but have a different skill set. Managing your finances is a skill, like everything else in life. It must be intentionally developed and practiced to see results. Most people did not have this skill taught to them and likely picked up bad financial habits early on in life. Unfortunately, this leads to costly mistakes in adulthood. The key is to acknowledge this weakness and seek to develop good financial habits. This is the whole mission of Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University.

On 3/16 I was listening to NPR and there was a story of a gentleman who was, I believe a pharmacist, but anyway, his tremendous debt was put on hold due to pandemic. He was relieved because he could put money to other things in life. Now he was full of anxiety again because he soon will have to resume payments. He went on to explain that (he got married) they needed a bigger car and they purchased a bigger home because there is another (!) kid on the way. This maddened me like nuts. Why go for a bigger car, bigger house and bigger family if you know that you have a loan to be paid off? Should I feel sorry for this dude now?

I don't understand why Deloney always plays the Aw shucks southerner. Every other word is y'all. Does this make Dave happy? I have lived in numerous southern states, and people who are speaking professionally do not speak like that. He needs to act more professional. He also regularly shames people. BE A PROFESSIONAL.

Wow I’ve watched a lot of these but this just became my last one. I’ve never heard such blatant cruelty towards a working pregnant mother of a baby. And if Dave didn’t speak up when he did the narrative would have continued towards her working more which is impossible and unhealthy. I mean the evil laughs towards the woman… man I’m done watching this circus. Amazing you bring your faith into this bc I don’t believe God would look kindly on this attack on this woman’s wife.

Students should protest by collectively refusing to pay back these student loans which is based on highly inflated costs that enrich the schools and make students indentured servants.

I dont understand why they have to sell a car when making 200k a year. They can pay off everything just fine without making the wife drive a used car and without eating only rice and beans. If he wants to sell a car, sell his own....and let the wife and new born ride in the new car.

@rayjgold 2 года назад
@@user-rw8zj1td9v I understand...but what is an extra year or two of payments, if it means you can drive and eat what you want right now? Even if his rent is 2k a month....that is 24k a year, and you still have 175k left to pay other bills. They probably already have the money in the bank to pay off the car, but didnt because on low interest rates. Dave is telling him to sell because Dave believes that we should only drive car after he is done with them.....until you reach his financial status. But this is just his way......but it isnt the only way. If it were me...I'd drive the used, and let the family stay in the new. I dont view cars as assets...so they dont depreciate in my eyes. Depreciation is something only used car salesmen should think about.

I agree 100%. Dave just has this obsession with trying to get out of debt in an unrealistically short time period. These people just have to learn to like a normal avg couple and they can throw 70-80K a year at debt. The problem is they've been spending like crazy
