Do they still do the jumbo Cod & chips? About 8 years ago I went in there and the thing was huge, served on a big platter plate & still overhung off the edge of that!
The things you do for this channel, mate. That too-ing and fro-ing up and down those steps and slopes had me in stitches. Get that bloody drone sorted Lee! Lol Great review as always. 😀
Companies need to make a profit.Depends on whether they own property or lease and the amount of weekly customers they serve. Have noticed over the last few years fish and chips seem to be closing earlier
Hanbury's is good, but expensive because it's relatively well known. Literally every other chippy on that main road is identical and all are cheaper. Drake's (if it's still open) was the go to, couple of doors down. Sadly a lot of the decent places in Torbay have all raised up to the same high prices with their costs going up. But as long as it's a dedicated chip shop (and not a bolt on part in another menu) the competition generally means you'll be having a good meal. Expect £7-10 a head as an average.
In one of these videos didn't a chef/restaurant owner tell you that they cook the fish with the skin on because it holds the fish together. Here you have a fish cooked without the skin and you say it is too "floppy".
Best F&C were in the 1960s cooked in dripping and wrapped in news paper to keep warm. These oils they now use give an inferior result. The Sunflower oil they mention is unhealthy. Any 'vegetable oils' are highly processed and heat processed to make seed oil look palatable, but our digestion systems are not designed to digest them. Animal fats like dripping and lard are good for us as we have been eating same for thousands of years. Government sources lie. I remember when they said margarine was healthier than butter. Total nonsense. So they don't taste the same now. In the 1960s, Fish was 1/- (5 new pence) and chips 6d (2.5 new pence). 1/6d total. A pint of best bitter was 2/6d. Can you imagine, gorgeous F&C were CHEAPER than a pint of beer. Why are modern F&C so expensive? So there you have it, They are not as nice now, less healthy, get cold quicker and much more expensive. That's why we don't bother with F&C now. Such a shame, F&C used to be gorgeous and cheap.
I'm really surprised with the quality of that fish. They were well known for using sunflower oil and frying at a very high temp back when I used to go there.
Jeez! That was some Trek Lee lol! You did well getting back up. Loved going to Torquay with my family as a child. It looked ok but definitely would say you've had better. 🥰🌞🥰xxx
damn shame rge Funicular wasn't working, loved the one in Scarboro years ago before my stroke, great things saved a couple of quid but that view was amazing, great video as always, have a cracking Christmas to you and your family
I have not been in the U.K since 2016 but the prices seem to have shot up. 10.75p for fish and chips ! I thought the 7.80p included the chips and thought that was expensive.
Thanks for the video. Great scenery where you are in this video. Looks like a great Fish and Chips dinner for you. Your Chips are what we call "Fries" here in the US. When we say Chips here in the US, we think of having thin Crispy salty Potato Chips. take care.
Hi Lee, have you ever thought of doing some city breaks type vlogs? I think it'd be great. Places like Rome, Prague ect. Maybe you could bring darren john, Jeff Carter or the cracmaster along aswell. That would be class 👏 looking forward to seeing, hopefully your australia blogs 🤞👍
Man that inhale, "it's really nice.. *cough cough cough*" I am sure there wasn't smog or anything just the cold air, but that is like a joke out of a 1980s New York, or Victorian London movie
I agree with johncrankyable, below. It likely frozen fish and the raw batter is probably too runny. Defrosted fish needs wringing out :) a bit, otherwise the water throws the batter off the fish. Good video, apart from showing off... running :) I doubt my knees could cope!
Several years ago walked down to the beach with the family for a picnic. Took a different route down, got lost but and eventually intersected with the train tracks. Had a picnic on the beach with family. Took the train back up. No way was I walking back the way I had come. Great video BTW.
I reckon most fish and chip shops cut there fish in half so they get 2 pieces out of one then charge extortionate prices just my opinion though thanks for sharing Lee I would give this a 3.5 😊
Fish is brain food apparently. Maybe too much is a bad thing when its smothered in peas and curry sauce Looks like frozen fish thin fillet. If it is cod. Might just be white fish
Great vlog Lee.. all those steps was like Laurel and Hardy's The Music Box after all the struggle someone says why didnt you just go that way lol . The batter on the fish looked like that flat coated batter if you know what l mean not bubbly with crispy bits which is much better .
LOL. You should try the coastal path from Sidmouth to Beer...at the end, get a beer at the pub then fish and chips in the high street. The walk certainly gives you an appetite!
Probably the fish was a bit fragile as it had the skin off. Also I think it had been frozen which always seems to make the fish come up thin. Having said that it looked ok to me!
Lovely views; haven't been to Babbacombe some years. PLEASE try Chez Fred, Westbourne, Bournemouth. Told you many times before, Lee! Best fish 🐠n chips in UK (probably). Get there early!😊
Calm down macmaster, glad you didn't head down to the beach 😳. Enough cardiovascular exercise for the day 😂. Torquay, sure glad you didn't end up in Turkey! Fabulosa vlog, as always. Wow what a beautiful view to eat lunch, curry sauce looks more like a thick gravy.
Bang average fish and chips looked a 6.2, soggy maybe due to them being put together in them boxes. I always have my fish separate from the chips for that reason.
Does not look good at all for the price. I don’t like that style of batter as like you says tastes greasy and soggy and curry sauce does not look nice I’d rate that a 6
Hambury's in Babbacombe Torquay is usually the best fish and chips in Devon. It was even better when the restaurant was open. Dover Sole and sweet potato chips was to die for. It is expensive though. The other best one is Franks Frying in Dawlish Devon and they came down from the Midlands, the batter is amazing.
I've eaten at Hanburys several times over the years. The building next door used to be their restaurant, which we ate in and the fish & chips back then were exceptional! Tbf, I felt yours looked nice! Babbacambe (which, btw, is pretty much a suburb of North Torquay!) is lovely though! Last year, my wife & I went to the Babbacombe Theatre where they do a traditional seaside variety show! Did gasp when I saw your intent to walk down to Oddidcombe Beach though! We spent an afternoon down there once and, yes, we used the railway in both directions! The Model Village is also well worth a look!
My favs are Drakes in Babbacombe. London Fryer in Preston. Scoffs in Paignton. Pauls Place in Barton. Also Anchors Rest at Paignton Harbour do fab chips. (open summer only).
Chips looked good!! I know some people like a very light batter but I'm with the Macmaster I like a more substantial batter...not fatty but thickish and crispy!
Oh dear Lee, you should have Google mapped it! 😆 That's a good price on the lager as long as it tastes good!! Bottom feeder cod that was only made popular due to advertising as there were shortages with other fish 😉 Over £15, ouch!! Batter doesn't look as crispy as others, small chips for the price, but do look good. Mushy peas, yucky colour, a bit pale. But the curry sauce looks brilliant!! Looks like Irish curry sauce that should be spicier than normal, nice and thick! With the price and fish into consideration along with the batter, peas and smaller chips, I'd go 7.6/10, not mind blowing, but better than good enough!
Stop going to the wrong places, go to Steels in the Market Place, Cleethorpes (best to book) or the Peabung, Freeman Street Market, Grimsby (used to have to queue all the time) and have some real fish and chips. I left Grimsby 40 years ago but if I ever go back I have to have some proper food, been known to dream about it.
I grew up in the 1950s just off Babbacombe downs and was in that chip shop every Friday after scouts , in those days it was run by a chap from Yorkshire . When you were going to the beach I was shouting go under the lines you plonker but you couldn't here me lol .The road down would have been a better option .
Looks thin. I had fish chips once in a small costal town, NW regular chippy, ate the first bite, told the owner this was the best ever, she said do you think flipped the swimming door to the kitchen. Box of Live cod, wish I could remember the location. Live in Cinci OH now, no good real English fish chips all fake UK pubs selll breaded. Keep up the good work.
Lee,that’s the best video you’ve ever done.. I was chuckling when you were climbing them steps and said “it feels like you’re walking to Newquay😂😂 You’re a character mate.. Absolutely brilliant 👌🏻
Your actually on Babbacombe Downs Lee haha. I live near here. If you had carried walking past Hanburys and turned left. theres a lovely little chippie called Drakes there. I recommend there mate. Hanburys used to be really nice, i find they let the fame go to there head, and they rely on the name now not the quality, i mean its not bad, its just average and for the money they charge then i can have that opinion lol.
@@Ash1983. ive been there in the last 12 months and i thought it was really nice. there also used to be a really nice chippie in st marychurch. my girlfriend used to live there and we went there quite often but forget the name now, quite near the pub on the corner.
If you had walked under the railway instead of carrying on the path you chose you would have been on the beach in 5mins.Or you could have driven down .Fish&Chips at Hanburys were better when the restaurant was open.,still nice though. As a local, only 1mile from home,i struggle up that hill too.Take the car to Cary Arms and walk to Oddicombe beach easier walk!
Think fish n chips is a personal thing at time of eating… Some like that warm homely feeling on a cold day… even though they can make ya fingers cold when eating them outside. It’s a good Olde British sacred tradition and everyone has their favorite chippy… Is one good chippy better than another? All personal preference 👍 Think it’s a 7/10… peas saved it
Hiya Lee. If you don’t mind me asking, what’s the song from when you’re climbing up the stairs?. Quite a little toe tapper that! Bet you’re buggered after that climb!
I did see something online that some of the fish and chip shops have been buying cat fish in as its cheaper and passing it off as cod fish makes ya wonder if this is true or not
Just as well you didn't walk into the fallen tree otherwise you might have been dazed and confused. Fish didn't look the best perhaps you should have gone further along the coast to Brixham, used to have fishing boats there.
We visited Torquay for a day about 10 or so years ago when we were staying in Brixham. To be honest, the fish and chips were not really all that great. They were much nicer in Brixham itself which is actually a fish town (there was a documentary on sky a few years back of the town). As for your fish and chips here, I thought they looked ok. Bit pricey for the amount you get but still decent enough. Maybe they were soggy in parts as the lady may have gone a bit overboard on the vinegar possibly? As for the cod being thin, I’m finding the same thing more and more nowadays sadly. Cod is meant to be thick and chunky. I find you get more with haddock so I tend to opt for that nowadays. Maybe you should have gone to Fawlty Towers whilst you were there!! Basil might have served you up a better fish🤣😂🤣😂. Great video mate and a fair score. I’ll go 7.5/10 on this one. Seen better, seen worse. Cheers Lee👍
Lovely little town whether Babbicombe or Torquay however the let down was the fish & chips. Maybe it wasn’t cod Lee but Pollock like many fish shops are doing now. Those steps would get your heart beat racing and work off some calories before the fish & chips. Realistic score for that Lee👍
