I worked a job for 10 years right along side the owner of the company, but people were asking me every week if I was the owner. This made my boss furious. They were shocked to find out I was nothing more than an associate. I opened and closed that store 6 days a week while the owner had the liberty to take his kids to school, pick them up and go on vacations every year. Although he gave me a $1 raise every other year, when I explained to him that i need a living wage, he just ignored me. I told him that I would be looking for another job. I guess he didn"t beleive me because it's been 2 years and he is still mad about it, from what his customers tell me. I learned a valuble lesson. Never let anyone take advantage like that and don't be afraid to leave. You owe them nothing and they wouldn't give you 2 weeks if they were going to let you go.

A 50 cent raise after being there 10 years is not "family". That shows they do not value you or even respect you. Best advice about careers I've heard was "You have to be selfish about your career". My mother had a similar situation where the company she worked for was cheap and paid extremely low wages with no raises. She ended up losing the house due to not being able to afford it and ended up homeless. Where was her "family" to help her then? NEVER remain loyal to a company that shows no loyalty.

But I also have a ton of work experience. sure, some could see that as not a professional way of leaving, but on the other hand, the state I'm in is an at-will state, either the employee or employer can terminate anytime. I think a two week notice is fine if you are leaving an employer you're happy with. If the only reason you're leaving is money telling the employer may result in receiving an offer for a raise or promotion. I could never understand why an employer would expect a two week notice if you were quitting due to being unhappy because of poor work environment {the prime motivation for my quitting past jobs}. A guy from where I work gave his 2 weeks notice and told the director that his new job offer was for much more than he was making and he was getting a position promotion, the director offered to promote the guy and give him more than what he was offered so the guy ended up staying. You have to ask for raises and promotions sometimes (most times if it is a small company).
@Acoustic_Theory
@Acoustic_Theory 5 лет назад
This is not the way to "ask" for a raise if you expect to get one. This is perceived as trying to force the negotiation. If your current company is not paying you what you are worth on the job market (that is, if you've received an offer for more money, thus redefining what you are "worth" as a worker), and they have not even shown a willingness to consider paying you more when they thought they had you, then you probably weren't going to get that raise anyway and should plan to move on.

The business isn’t a charity and an employee are not charity workers. Just like the business owner the employee needs to get paid. No raise in two years would have been justified to leave, after a decade you should asked yourself why didn’t you leave sooner? Don't even say loyalty because that’s a two-way street and this was pretty one sided. Before you give the two weeks notice ask for a raise see what kind of loyalty they have toward you. If they say no or blow you off, they'll notice that you're not coming in anymore. Ten years? are you crazy?

I always do an exit interview. I send it certified mail. let them sign for it. Then, a week after that, walk in and pick up your last check. trust me, you will feel fantastic, it may be colder than the iceberg that sank the Titanic, but it is beneficial, cathartic, and effective.

I have quit one job, as I did get a better offer. The job was salary with a 6 day work week, and on call 24/7. Pay and location were good, but not that good. Occasional bonus, but no benefits. It does not look good on a resume that you quit due to a bad employer. It looks much better that you advanced your career by taking a more challenging position offer that was a better match for your skill set. Being under utilized and thus under valued is a valid reason to change jobs.

Advice for giving your 2-weeks notice (in the US at least): Don't bother with doing it or thinking about it. Statistically, you're likely working for a company that can fire you whenever they want, for whatever reason they want, and in most cases they don't even have to tell you why. The reason they want at least 2-weeks notice? Because otherwise they'd have to rearrange their schedule a bit to process your resignation, and that's a widdle fwustwating :( Not very proportionate, right? And if you're worried about what the employer may say about you in a future reference; if all you did was resign without 2-weeks notice, all your former employer can say (without opening themselves up to a defamation lawsuit from you) is, essentially, that they have a hard time working an Outlook calendar. It would do far more damage to their future prospects than it would to yours, if any.
@GorillionDollars
@GorillionDollars 5 лет назад
The problem is that they basically hold you hostage with bad references for future positions. I agree that companies don't owe you anything but the 2 week notice is unfortunately the best option UNLESS you've managed to find another job while working your current one.
@ceecee8757
@ceecee8757 5 лет назад
By law, the employer is only allowed to verify the dates you worked there. Companies ask questions such as, "Would you rehire this person?" in which case, it's just a yes or no answer.

Funny how companies talk about professionalism and etiquette if you don’t give a two-weeks notice but when they fire you it’s “effective immediately”. Professionalism and etiquette is also about respect and treating others the way you want to be treated. Somehow companies lose sight of this when they decide to fire you. Seems like most companies are unprofessional and are hypocrites.

@BigKevin1194

There's several reason why people would give their 2 week notice. I'm the type of person that will give my 2 week notice once I found another job. People leave jobs because they wanted something better so they use the current company they work at as a stepping stone or they don't get many chances to move up in their current job so they decided to take a chance on themselves and find a better job. My advice to anybody that wants to quit their job by giving your 2 week notice is that don't be afraid of what your manager or boss would think, they might feel betrayed that your leaving them but you have to think about yourself first and foremost. Sometimes it's not selfish to want something better for yourself.

This dude is definitely a beta. How are you gonna work at a company for 17 years and never ask for a raise? You missed out on so much income. That's money your boss pocketed for himself. I'd be mad if I were him. Instead he's worried about hurting his boss's feeling. That's so backwards. Your boss ripped you off. Wake up! Get better at negotiating.

I think a lot of people are more worried only about money. If you've been with someone for a while you've developed a relationship. And its more like family. There's things more important in a job than money. The people you work with or for is huge.

Corporate "persons" are no more important than real persons. The golden rule of person-to-person treatment is...The Golden Rule--treat others as you would like to be treated. Do corporate persons give two-week notices to real persons when they layoff or fire employees? No? Then why do Corporate persons deserve a two-week notice? No person deserves better than the Golden Rule would grant to them, and I certainly wouldn't reward that corporate person's bad behavior.
