What you want to do, is fill the gas cans about 1/4 full, the vapor is what is explosive. So heating the can with a lot of room for expansion will cause the sudden release of energy. Try again with that and tell me if it works. ;) P.S. SEAL the tanks tightly, put the caps on as tight as possible, and maybe secure them with some Gorilla tape or something, the greater the tension the bigger the boom.

The tricky thing about burning gasoline is the gasoline itself doesn't really burn all that well. It's the vapors that burn. The reason being, there's no source of oxygen in the gas itself to support combustion. And if you remember the fire triangle from school, every fire needs 3 things to sustain it, fuel, in this case, gasoline, heat, like from the flare, and oxygen from the air. But the oxygen can't mix into it effectively if the gas is just sitting as a puddle of liquid. It's the fumes that burn, because the fumes can mix with the air to get enough oxygen to burn. That's why the fuel injector in a car sprays a fine mist of gasoline into the cylinder, instead of just dumping the fuel in as a straight liquid. When you aerosolize it like the fuel injector does, it's able to mix nicely with the air.

You can now certainly say: "Looks like a grenade went off in here" xD
