My god, that 152mm D20 gun is a monster. Everyone has seen the Battle of Berlin films where the Soviets are just firing point blank at buildings with that gun. I can't imagine being on the receiving end and continuing to fight.

The 25mm 37SA Puteaux gun did not have all that much trouble penetrating German armor at combat ranges in 1940 (which is why the Germans uparmored their panzers before invading the Soviet Union the following summer). When evaluating historical weapons, context is everything. As an historian, it is a treat to see such a rare weapon still functioning, as it provides insights into the weapon's actual performance characteristics, ergonomics, etc. Keep 'em coming! :)

If I remember correctly, the melons barely moved initially when being hit, I assume they have a lot of inherita due to their mass and can displace the shell easier than thin metal, which is easily pierced and bent out of the way. Then the impact angle will make a significant difference, too. A flat surface will be penetrated, however if the shell does not hit the center of the melon with its tip, it will naturally be pushed upward by the resistance of the collision. Just some amateur estimations here, no deep physics stuff.

@@dayofmone While that is right, also watermelons are over 60% water and as you know it water is not compressible. So a bullet loses a lot more energy on a watermelon than a sheet metal that bends out of it's way. Like when you do a belly flop into a pool. Also, watermelons are naturally round and hence they roll with the shot, absorbing even more energy. If you ever seen boxing on TV or live, you probably saw them do this when they can't evade or block.
