In this video I am very excited to show you my new camping dirtbike.
I kit it out with ‪@GiantLoopMoto‬ bags, and gear. Talk about my plans with the klx 300r, why I got it and go for a test run.
I've never ridden a dirtbike or motorcycle in my life up until a few days ago.

Not to pick on the bro but this is a great cautionary tale that a lot of people can learn a lot from, including Joe. As a biker I instantly cringed hearing him say he taught himself in 20 minutes and felt confident rippin around offroad. Seat time. Seat time. Seat time. Doesn't matter who you are, you need seat time. Lots and lots of seat time. Did I mention seat time? Riding properly is much more than knowing the basics, it's about understanding all the little things and situations you can run into through personal experience, and how to react in that moment, especially offroad, and especially solo. Also... helmets, people. Always.

From someone whose been riding dirtbikes and quads for 15 years, here's a couple of tips for better riding that I've learned: -when riding over technical terrain at a slower pace, pull the clutch in just a little bit, not all the way, but about halfway. This will help prevent the bike from stalling and give more traction to the back wheel. -sit as far up as you can comfortably on the seat, you have much better control of the bike this way than if you're sitting farther back. -also when going over technical terrain, it's best to stand up if you can. Keep your knees bent at a slight angle and make sure you're on the balls of your feet on the foot pegs. -when turning, weight the outside of the bike opposite the direction your turning. This will help prevent the front wheel from sliding out and help you turn sharper. So if you're turning left, you would weight the right side of the bike with your right leg. Don't try to hard, just a little bit, it doesn't take much. - Remember to "look where you want to go, not at what you're afraid of hitting". It may seem obvious but a lot of beginners will hesitate when they see something they want to avoid like a big rock in the path for example. And they will focus on the rock. Don't do that lol. Pick a line around the obstacle and keep your eyes straight ahead. Don't look down and don't focus on the front fender too much. -when going uphill, lean forward on the bike, pull the clutch in just a little bit for better traction, and make sure you're in a lower gear. I personally wouldn't be in anything higher than 3rd unless you're doing jumps on a motocross track lol. -when going down hill it's the opposite. Lean back a little bit, if you need to use the brakes it's best to use the back brake from my experience. There's a ton more I could type. I absolutely LOVE dirtbikes and it's undoubtedly my number 1 passion. "The Total Dirt Rider Manual" by Pete Peterson is a great riding book. It covers everything from the proper riding techniques, some which I discussed above, the different types of riding gear, mechanical stuff and routine bike maintenance. Welcome to the riding community my friend! If I was closer I'd love to ride with you but I'm in South Carolina lol.

I am 62, riding since age 11.... it was obvious he was riding too fast without knowing how to handle certain terrain or events. Too big of a bike to ride with low caution. I was lucky... I started on a new 1973 Honda XR-75. Fell so many times, impossible to count. But I was young, resilient, bike was not that fast, and good motor skills as a young person. As I got older I knew how to ride. Even today, I have an off road and I am very cautious because, frankly, it is a Honda XR-650L and it is not great handling... so I know what not to do.

About shifting, the main thing is not to lug the engine so much. It should feel free and loose especially important until the engine is broken in. That doesn't mean screamin' it's guts out, you don't need that with a 4 stroke. Get a set of chrome moly handlebars and use the cross brace pad that comes with them. They don't bend when you fall off, also, get a set of aluminum hand guards to protect the clutch and brake handles. It sucks to be in the middle of nowhere and break off the clutch lever. My brother and I raced off road Hare Scrambles and enduros from 1980 to about 2005 (we got old) Your milage may vary but we cut our bars down to 28 inches but we raced through the trees a lot. If you cut them down you lose leverage so do some soul searching before you start chopping. If you aren't having trouble with the seat height I would not be in a hurry to start messing with the suspension, ( but I am 6'1" so there's that). You can do it but to do it right is spelled C A S H. if you get cheap on it the bike won't handle worth a damn.

Motorcycling is a lifelong journey that requires constant learning and constant skill development/maintenance. That said it can be one of the most rewarding and relaxing things ever. My life has improved so much since I started riding, but I do understand it's not for everyone, sadly. I can't imagine my life without my bike now. This is coming from someone who raced 250gp, ride an Aprilia RSVR Factory 1100cc VTwin, and i have been riding all my life. Just be careful at first Joe!! When it comes to turning at slow speeds like in your backyard, make sure you are downshifting to like first gear. And make sure that your idol is turned down so it doesn't just rip right off the get. So maybe find a really good mechanic and to make friends. There are groups that get together, just search your area, for off-road, dirt bike groups camping etc, or if there is a known place where people ride off-road equipment near you maybe just go talk to people out there.

Hey Joe, just a friendly reminder when you put all your gear on yourself weigh yourself. And then estimate the gear weight that you put on the bike. That way you can set the spring rate in the back and your preload on your front forks. Set up your static sag and your rider SAG, rear shock for height. The bike will handle better than with the load. There’s a lot of small things you can do to make the bike handle better while riding and you will notice a difference, air pressure in your tires. Find a happy medium we always ran 9 pounds to 10 pounds in the front tire and ran 11 pounds in the back but now you can take the tubes out and put the solid cores in.The medium ones work fine for that no flats.’ .

Noticed a few things watching him ride that were very dangerous, going into puddles at high speed, you don't know how deep that is, what if it's a 2 foot deep pothole? Yeah I'm sorry budy but this was coming, too unsafe.

Long time mountain biker, I don't known anything about dirt bikes and appreciate that the dirt bike community shares a collective wisdom about safety that's possibly even higher than it is in mountain bikes. But hitting puddles at speed on an unknown trail, even a mountain biker wouldn't do that.

Excited to see this content :) two tips, bring a little plank for under your kickstand so you can park on softer ground as well, and when getting off, always put out the kickstand first, if you lose your balance the stand will catch the bike and you avoid getting crushed and or damaging your bike.

Hey Joe, it's good to see you get into bikes, and can't wait to see the adventures to come. One tip that I think can help with shifting, is playing a little more with the clutch, and always having one or two fingers on it. I ride more enduro/off-road and when in the dirt, using more the clutch, like not letting go all of it straight away, specially when riding slower, can help you feel the bike a lot smoother. Obviously can wear your hand a bit, but you'll get used to it. Enjoy the bike man!

BS on being too old to learn how to ride a dirt bike, where the problem lies is choosing a bike that's way too big for you, not wearing proper protective gear, and possibly getting on a bike after a pop or two. Get well soon Joe.

Tips while riding: ease on the throttle when starting out and be fluid. Don’t be afraid to give it a little more so it doesn’t die. While riding just use 2 fingers on the clutch if you can so if you hit a bump while shifting you’re still holding on. Don’t hit the front brake super hard in a corner or it can slide out on you, ease on it and use the rear too! Get a pad for the handlebar so if you hit a pot hole too hard or something your chest doesn’t hit the bare bar! Hope that helps man! So pumped for you!

Hi Joe. Great to see you on a bike. Just some stuff that helped me...a lot of people have already said it but you can ride or feather the clutch, especially to handle low speeds. It won't wear the clutch hard like a car. Stand up on the pegs for balance and low center of gravity through rough stuff, and dont look just in front of your tyre, focus ahead of your bike, look at where you want to go and its a lot easier to balance and take the line you want. Love you mate, take care.

I truly believe if you weren’t raised on motorcycles, then getting one later in life is a horrible idea. There is something that’s learned from riding so much as a kid that you can’t just teach.. but to jump on and just go is crazy. So confident he didn’t even wear a helmet when he crashed. At that point he would have been riding for less than a month.

When switching gears, smoothly release the clutch. As a beginner, you can count to three before fully releasing the clutch. When downshifting, blip the throttle to match the RPM for the lower gear you are shifting into.
