In this video I am very excited to show you my new camping dirtbike.
I kit it out with ‪@GiantLoopMoto‬ bags, and gear. Talk about my plans with the klx 300r, why I got it and go for a test run.
I've never ridden a dirtbike or motorcycle in my life up until a few days ago.

I suggest some hand guards since you will be riding through trees and stuff... trust me when it happens and it will, you will be thankful you had them.
@mrastleysghost
@mrastleysghost Месяц назад
Yep - barkbusters or similar will also prevent breaking stuff when he drops it (like the throttle tube on the CB500 or breaking the ends off levers). I'd also recommend a skid plate and maybe radiator guards. Any other bike armor is probably more than Joe really needs for motocamping

Bikes are great! A rider course is definitely worth doing but riding isn't hard, you'll do great! Slow down and downshift before you get to turns, not while you're in them, be super careful on wet pavement and grass, and always be aware that you're one mistake away from a serious injury... stakes are higher on a bike. Don't push your limits. Looking forward to seeing what you get yourself into with this thing!

Nice bike Joe ! We camped off our dirt bikes in upper peninsula of Michigan and the lower of Michigan. We belong to the CCC cycle conservation of Michigan. Dispersed camping on a dirt bike is awesome. I’ve been riding since I’ve been eight years old, I’m now 57. If you have any questions, let me know. We just threw a backpack on and took as much water as we could some filters for water an some dry food, first aid kit, a Hamic, etc and off we went. Obviously a few tools here and there but what an experience. Glad to see the doing this.

About shifting, the main thing is not to lug the engine so much. It should feel free and loose especially important until the engine is broken in. That doesn't mean screamin' it's guts out, you don't need that with a 4 stroke. Get a set of chrome moly handlebars and use the cross brace pad that comes with them. They don't bend when you fall off, also, get a set of aluminum hand guards to protect the clutch and brake handles. It sucks to be in the middle of nowhere and break off the clutch lever. My brother and I raced off road Hare Scrambles and enduros from 1980 to about 2005 (we got old) Your milage may vary but we cut our bars down to 28 inches but we raced through the trees a lot. If you cut them down you lose leverage so do some soul searching before you start chopping. If you aren't having trouble with the seat height I would not be in a hurry to start messing with the suspension, ( but I am 6'1" so there's that). You can do it but to do it right is spelled C A S H. if you get cheap on it the bike won't handle worth a damn.
@cutuupak
@cutuupak Месяц назад
@Joe Robinet you need to get some head lights mounted on that bike, there will come a time where your gonna get caught in the dark riding that thing so get some lights installed. Oh yea when putting the bike in gear you don’t have to stomp on the gear shifter, and be careful riding through those puddles of water at that high speed, you don’t know how deep those holes are, be safe!!!!

Welcome to the best and one of the most addicting hobbies out there. I wish you many safe adventures on the bike. Check out some of the Backcountry Discovery Routes here in the US. I urge you to consider getting some solid enduro boots. They're pricey and they're gonna decrease your feel on the rear brake until you get used to them. But all my motorcycle injuries have been foot related due to me crashing at slow speeds while wearing inadequate foot protection. Personally I wear Tech 7 enduros.

Joe, I too waited until I was in my late 30's to start riding. I'm now in my early 60's. All of my riding has been on pavement, though my current ride is a dual sport. I've no experience riding dirt, but would definitely advise taking the rider course before you get on paved roads. I've dropped every one of my bikes, but never under power. It happens. Learn how to lift your bike properly. Your back will thank you. Feathering the clutch is a very valuable skill in riding, probably more so in dirt. Keep practicing until it's second nature. Enjoy the ride! Thanks for sharing this new adventure.

Hey Joe. Nice bike. Many years ago, I used to do some enduro racing and ice racing. One suggestion I may offer is to install bark busters and hand guards. This will help protect your brake and clutch levers. The hand guards also offer good protection for your hands and help cut the wind on cooler days. Welcome to the world of motorcycling.

Joe, you are showing the same issues that I have been dealing with, with my depresssion. It doesn't matter how successful we think we are, but when everything that we used to love seems like a chore, it's time to get help. I am no therapist, just a friend who has enjoyed your videos for years. But, I have seen your turmoil and inconsistency since your brother's death. We all know that this is your livelihood, but go get the help you need and figure yourself out. We will be here and when you get better, and your channel will grow again. We love you for who you are, not who you think you should be. Stop worrying about the algorithm and loss of income from less videos. When you get back to just showing us your life, and what you like doing, you will have a long successful and happy long term future on youtube. Stop focusing on view counts, new subscribers, engagement. Just do you! That is why we are here. You have a great story telling ability, focus on that and your family and the rest will follow! Best to you.

Congrats on the Bike(s) I have the big brother to your 500, the Africa Twin. My buddy calls his 500 the "Halfrica Twin" haha There is no better way to learn the basics to a bike than on a dirt bike, the riding position is great, you will shift gears more (being off road) your balance will get better, learning to ride your clutch (not in a bad way) a little bit to slowly approach obstacles. Thats how I learned back in the day on a little KX80. You're gonna love it, have fun !

From someone whose been riding dirtbikes and quads for 15 years, here's a couple of tips for better riding that I've learned: -when riding over technical terrain at a slower pace, pull the clutch in just a little bit, not all the way, but about halfway. This will help prevent the bike from stalling and give more traction to the back wheel. -sit as far up as you can comfortably on the seat, you have much better control of the bike this way than if you're sitting farther back. -also when going over technical terrain, it's best to stand up if you can. Keep your knees bent at a slight angle and make sure you're on the balls of your feet on the foot pegs. -when turning, weight the outside of the bike opposite the direction your turning. This will help prevent the front wheel from sliding out and help you turn sharper. So if you're turning left, you would weight the right side of the bike with your right leg. Don't try to hard, just a little bit, it doesn't take much. - Remember to "look where you want to go, not at what you're afraid of hitting". It may seem obvious but a lot of beginners will hesitate when they see something they want to avoid like a big rock in the path for example. And they will focus on the rock. Don't do that lol. Pick a line around the obstacle and keep your eyes straight ahead. Don't look down and don't focus on the front fender too much. -when going uphill, lean forward on the bike, pull the clutch in just a little bit for better traction, and make sure you're in a lower gear. I personally wouldn't be in anything higher than 3rd unless you're doing jumps on a motocross track lol. -when going down hill it's the opposite. Lean back a little bit, if you need to use the brakes it's best to use the back brake from my experience. There's a ton more I could type. I absolutely LOVE dirtbikes and it's undoubtedly my number 1 passion. "The Total Dirt Rider Manual" by Pete Peterson is a great riding book. It covers everything from the proper riding techniques, some which I discussed above, the different types of riding gear, mechanical stuff and routine bike maintenance. Welcome to the riding community my friend! If I was closer I'd love to ride with you but I'm in South Carolina lol.

Hi Joe. Great to see you on a bike. Just some stuff that helped me...a lot of people have already said it but you can ride or feather the clutch, especially to handle low speeds. It won't wear the clutch hard like a car. Stand up on the pegs for balance and low center of gravity through rough stuff, and dont look just in front of your tyre, focus ahead of your bike, look at where you want to go and its a lot easier to balance and take the line you want. Love you mate, take care.

Fun stuff. Clutch control needs some practice! Try keeping a finger or 2 on your clutch when riding. When the bike starts "chugging", you need to feather it (that means give it a series of small gentle pulls) and that will help smooth out the engine. Also, you are aggressively pulling the clutch and dumping it (letting go); take more time to pull/release it gently. Have fun!

Been riding ATVs since I was like 6 years old. Since you asked for advice just thought I'd offer a little help. One it looks like you look for neutral then put it back into 1st after you find neutral, the reason the shift pattern is one down the rest up is so you don't have to do that. Just keep tapping it down and you know you're in first. Also don't bother finding neutral when you shut it off. Just shut it off in first then before you start it again find neutral, it's a lot easier when it's not running and if it's refusing to change gears while it's not running just rock it forward and backward a touch that will take any tension off the gears and it will change gears then, and really the only reason to want neutral is if you are cold starting it and want it to idle up to working temperature. If it's already hot just start it in first and go. Pretty familiar with this particular model and I believe (unless things have changed) it only has a clutch safety switch on the starter not a neutral safety switch. Also I'd recommend gearing it down if it's mostly going to be off road that just makes sense to get more torque at the expense of top speed. Pretty simple modification you just want to look for a larger rear sprocket and a smaller front sprocket. That will also help keep you from stalling out. Shouldn't be too expensive even if you don't do it yourself. You already mentioned reducing the ride height I think that's a good idea. Finding a way to do that without getting smaller wheels/tires would be the best way as those bigger tires are going to make it easier to go over larger obstacles (downed trees, stones, etc.) Sacrificing suspension will suck but learn to ride rough terrain with your butt off the seat just a few inches then your legs can act as additional suspension. Other than that I'd say take all your extra gear off of the bike and ride it. Can't beat experience and you'll minimize what you can damage by not having that stuff on there. Last bit of advice. There are lots of things to get more power out of these motors but the biggest problem you are going to run into if you go down that path is finding someone who can actually still tune a carburetor. Every power mod will require the carburetor to need adjustment and lots of people think they know what they are doing but don't. And yes that includes "professional" shops. So just leave that stock/OEM until you find someone you know you can trust.

Oh! Get yourself a "tugger strap" for the front. It wraps around the fork and gives you a great handle for moving the front of the bike or helping move it around and pick it up when you drop it.

Fun! as I have gotten older I've turned to overlanding often... hitting the back roads and two tracks in the National Forests. Good stuff!

Congratulations Joe. It’s such a fun bike and you’re riding so well already. So you and “The Dork” who I love to watch should collaborate and do the Smokey Mountain 500. I picked up a KLX 230 s lower seat height. Nice GL kit. Enjoy.
