Cats are known to choose their favorite person in a family, and in our house I have been Creature's favorite for 16 years. Until a small change in our routine suddenly made him switch allegiances. What happened?
I have always been fascinated with how cats think and what influences their behaviors, both good and bad. After fostering hundreds of cats and kittens, having many resident cats, and helping other people with their own cat issues, I have seen a LOT of different cat personalities! In this video, we'll get to the bottom of Creature's sudden infatuation with another person in the house and examine how YOUR personality and habits can have a huge effect on your cat. This is the first in a series of exploring what makes cats do what they do, and what we as caregivers can do to help everyone in the home coexist happily and peacefully.
Coming soon: Cat jealousy and the nasty things that can come from it...and some solutions to help. Subscribe so you don't miss it!

I have always been fascinated with the way cats think and how "in tune" they are to their human caregivers. We affect their behavior more than we realize, both good and bad. Let us know in the comments what cat behaviors you have experienced in your feline family, or ask a question!

I've been lucky. I haven't really had any issues with my cats. 😅 The only "issue" is that recently we got 2 more kittens that we bottle fed and my oldest cat got a little bit mean because they wouldn't leave his tail alone. Other than that, nothing. All of my cats are related in some way. My oldest cat is the father of the 2 one and a half year old cats that we have (very obvious when you see that they're practically clones of him) and the new kittens are half siblings to the one and a half year olds. We've got Thorne, Simba, Nala, Pumpkin, and one that has yet to be named.

We have a cat who's an attention junkie. He can be anywhere in the house, even asleep, and if you start paying attention to another cat (we have 5), he's right there butting into the action. There's no hostility, but he wants all the attention. It's really quite funny how he appears on the scene every time a cat other than him is getting attention!
@KittenSchool

That sounds like my Sing Sing! If he hears me sweet talking another cat, even if I'm in a different room, he comes running. I have to be sure to spend quality time with each of our other cats, because Sing Sing would monopolize me if he could! He is the kind of cat who never met a stranger, so when people are over he's right there in someone's lap (trying to get to the snacks on the table, usually). Thanks for sharing!

This has been happening to me lately this year. Usually, I'm the one feeding the cats that have just lived on our house, so they naturally want to find me and come to me, but now I got someone else to help me out. It's a funny feeling being the one on the sidelines looking at my cats drawn to someone else for affection and necessities 😅

I would love to hear some of your insight! I have two cats who were raised together when they were kittens, but one of my boys is extremely food motivated and during meal time when we are preparing food for them, he would keep bopping my other kitty’s head - almost attacking but not quite as viscous. Is this normal?
@KittenSchool
@KittenSchool 2 года назад
omg that's exactly what our cat Snowy does to the other cats during feeding time! She stalks around the kitchen and "confronts" the other cats, one in particular, and then bops them on the head or smacks them. Then when they walk away she bops them on the butt! It's funny, and usually she isn't too intense, and the other cats don't really seem to mind. So I haven't done anything other than occasionally pushing her aside with my foot when she gets too obnoxious. I think it's just her way of "posturing" in front of the other cats, like, "you better not even THINK of trying to eat my food." She's also becoming a lot more dominant in the hierarchy, now just below Sing Sing who's the top cat. So, I don't think it's completely rare for cats in multiple cat homes to exhibit this behavior. As long as no one is getting to rough or stressed I wouldn't worry about it!

That next video coming up, about Multicat Household Aggression and Jealousy, well, that's going to be a big one is my guess. I myself had two problems. Calico Peggy, who had been a Parking Lot cat but I took her in after her first year, and somebody had at least partially socialized her, but turnover at this Apartment Complex is high, and so I thought I'd take over for her. Well, once in a while she would get out the door, but she'd come back at meal time. She was never really comfortable with the other five or six cats. She would mingle with them in the day, but you knew she was concerned because she would only find very high perches where she could get her sleep safe, alone and secure. I had her like that for 3 years. Then I took in another Parking Lot cat.... I think it was even her daughter, Angie .... I hadn't even known that Peggy had been pregnant until I got her back from the vet and all the shave off fur showed recently engorged mammary glands. Well, I heard some lady had fostered a complete litter of Kittens at about that time, and Angie, a Plain Jane Grey Tabby, was one of them. It was her second year and she was going to have a 3rd litter of kittens and so I trained her to come to my door for food and took her to get her fixed. I brought her inside, but she was very defensive. She would find something to turn into a cave or a fort and just live there, often pooping there. When she would relax enough to explore, well, my cats had taken in new cats before, but Angie's defensive energy made them all Really Nervous. They hated her. Then Peggy got out the door and this time she completely left the Territory, to the next parking lot down. Peggy like me and so I brought her home once, after I found her. She didn't seem to recognize anybody. Oh, I kicked out Angie after I lost Peggy (was the jealousy, or did Peggy just finally have enough of the atmosphere that always had her a little bit nervous). Yeah, I couldn't keep Angie after losing Peggy like that .... I didn't even want to have to think I made a trade. But after more an a month when I finally found Peggy and brought her home, well, she didn't recognize any of her old friends, or maybe living outside made her more cautious. So I opened the door and she went back to her other parking lot. I think Peggy likes a Korean Lady, the wife of the Landlord over there . Peggy will wait for her outside their Office. The lady loves animals and has a super cute little Papillion Dog (you know, with the butterfly ears). I had to explain to her in my pantomime charade English Korean that she gets out of My Door and I always find her at Her Door. I think she is working on her Husband to bring Peggy inside... she asked me in her pantomime charade English Korean whether I had Peggy as an Inside Only cat, and she was encouraged when I said yes. And BOTH of us noticed that Peggy had lost a lot of weight. The Korean Lady thought it was tragic when she caught Peggy doing some Dumpster Diving. Oh, fascinating fact, Peggy enjoyed my visit and I was giving her some quality time with pets, thumps and head and chin scratches, that is, until the Korean Lady came out and Peggy distanced herself real fast and favored the Korean Lady. Yeah, I hope Peggy can work her magic and get that nice home. Yeah, Caroline, I used to brag about being the guy that Runaway Cats would run to, BUT what comes around apparently goes around, and I finally had one run away from me. Yeah, and Angie, she comes around. Whenever I take out the trash, she walks me to the dumpster. I tried once to bring her back in, hoping that she got used to all the other cats from meeting them at my screen door, but, no, her edgy behavior when she comes inside still makes everybody too nervous and Big Roary (8 year old Neutered Tom who is finally taking charge as the Man of the House) started hissing at her, and my little Favorite Siamese Tommy, he was missing his meal times... and he'd always usually be first at the dishes. So I opened the door and she left. yeah, she hangs around outside. She likes me. But I won't feed her outside... I'd have to stand out there and guard the dish from dogs and other cats. I hold the door open and say "Angie Come In" but she won't. But she hasn't been losing too much weight. Somebody else is feeding cats around here.. But, yeah, I'm sure your video will remind me of other instances of Cat Drama going on all around me here.

Another great video from you and it was nice to see creature, sing-sing and malu (spelling can't remember) again. My brother has 1 cat who is spayed and he brought another adult male cat who is not neutered. The male cat is very friendly towards humans but he just attacks the female cat, I mean whenever he sees her he goes to kill her! So we had to separate them and I don't know if neutering will help him or not to accept our female cat. Otherwise he is such a nice behaved cat.
@scottweiss9618
@scottweiss9618 2 года назад
Oh! Hi Fatima! Yeah, I've heard that neutering Toms nearly always helps with aggression issues. However, I have an 8 year old big neutered Tabby, Big Bear Roary, and, yeah, he was hissing at one female I brought inside, but only after a few days. I think what bothered him was that the female was very nervous. You know what they say, about how animals smell FEAR and that make them aggressive. Well, just the other cat being nervous would make Roary nervous. When I took in my Franky Blue Tux (looks like a French Chartreuse... great cat) well, Roary hissed at him, just once or twice, but Franky is SO relaxed and easy going that Roary simply relaxed too.

@fatimazohra9149 2 года назад
@@scottweiss9618 I don't know the reason why the male cat doesn't like our female cat, maybe my brother didn't introduce them properly. But the real problem is the male cat doesn't just hiss at the female, he straight goes to kill her! One time he was so violent that she urinated from fear and even broke a claw. So now I keep the male one and my brother keeps the female one.

@@fatimazohra9149 Hi Fatima, so, yeah, there is hostile vocalizations. That really does mean that he want to kill. Yeah, I'm kind of confused. Out at the Feral Cat Feeding Stations the Female Cats stay whole and healthy most the time. Males seem to save their aggression for other Males while doing all that Mating Competition stuff. But, inside a House, well, I guess it must be Territorial.

Hi Fatima! Thank you for the comment. I do think that getting your brother's male cat neutered will help calm his aggression a great deal. He will be a much better pet, friendlier and less likely to want to roam. That's what I would do. Hope you are doing great!

Great video. Love hearing about your cats! My kitty is in need of a flea medication. I'd prefer to get her something in an oral tablet form factor, as she *hated* it the one time I applied a topical solution to the back of her neck. I think oral formulations exist but are less common. Any suggestions?
@KittenSchool
@KittenSchool 2 года назад
Hey there! I'll tell you what has worked GREAT for me for flea control with 6 cats, and it's generic Capstar, active ingredient is nytenpyram. It's oral, usually a powder or in a gel cap, and I sprinkle it into my cat's food. It kills any existing fleas within 12 hours. Now, it doesn't act like a long-lasting prevention, so you may have to repeat in another few days or a week to get them all. Then I flea comb like crazy to get any eggs out. Nitenpyram is very safe, I have never ever had one single issue with giving it to my cats, and I give it to kittens who are at least 2 months old. You can buy it online, I have bought from PetsNeedMeds.com for almost 10 years now and their prices are very reasonable. Since I have started this regime I have not had to use a topical flea solution, that are much more likely to cause reactions. Hope this info helps!

Hello Caroline. I so much love your various clips. I know what you mean when some people say that cats are aloof and do show their love for you like dogs do. This may sound a bit daft, but with all the kitties I have had the pleasure to be their human companion, they all have shown me their unique way of loving ❤. This may sound a bit sexist towards male cat lovers, a kittie has the generic description as "feline ". The clue is in the first two syllables f and e . If you fellas need a further clue then the word is feminine. When it comes to showing love 💘 our ladies are more aware and in tune with emotions and so much more. I am going to mention that all fellas have a feminine part in them, but many do not choose to acknowledge that. Back to my kitties 💕. Because I embrace my feminine side ,I truly believe that in part, that is why my kitties gave me their love 💘.

I have always liked men who love cats! To me, it was a must. When I was single, if a guy didn't really like cats, I wasn't interested in dating them. Cats don't make it easy to win their love, and the kind of person who accepts that is a strong, confident person. Thanks for the comment, Brian!
@scottweiss9618

Hi Brian... NO! I think cats are attracted to Macho! I've had a couple of Feral Cat feeding stations and I ROAR at dogs and chase them off and whenever some New Alpha (always female) tries to take over the Feeding Station, I go in with a roar and even the score. Cat Like That. Oh, the first time I saw it was almost 30 years ago... my first cat since I became an adult. A bunch of kids had her surrounded. They weren't going to hurt her, but it was clear she felt cornered, and so from the top of the Stairs I Roared at them all to frighten them, and i SURE DID... all those kids turned white as ghosts, well, except for the little Brown Kids but they were spooked. But the CAT... my Little Bob Girl never flinched. I saw it a million times with my Ferals, that they never flinch when I ROAR for the Colony... they know I'm one of them. And they dig it.

My family has two female cats one is the mama the other is the daughter. They get along most of the time but the mama cat will also attack the daughter cat either randomly or when she is hungry -.- how to stop this behavior? Yelling/making noise to startle her doesn’t seem to do much good
@KittenSchool
@KittenSchool 2 года назад
Hi there! It sounds like Momma is trying to hold on to her dominance over the daughter. First, do not not yell or make noise, as that will only escalate an already tense mood. If she attacks the other cat, say "no" (firmly but not loud and angry), then calmly take her into another room and sit with her, petting and soothing her. She needs to feel that she still has some power in the house, and that her status with you is secure. She won't associate this positive reinforcement with her attacks, what I mean to say is she won't be like, "Oh wow, I attack the other cat and I get treats!" It's all about building her confidence and keeping jealousy at bay, whether that is being jealous over your attention or a plate of food. Remember, de-escalate the situation and with time she will stop striking out as much. However, it might still happen occasionally. That's just how cats are sometimes, mine included!
@scottweiss9618
@scottweiss9618 2 года назад
@@KittenSchool Yeah, Caroline, I think you hit the nail on its head with TAKING THE CAT INTO THE NEXT ROOM. Any time that you move the a cat just 5 or 6 feet away from an INCIDENT, well, it breaks the association. If it is a different place, then it is a different time, a different event. I noticed that for the first time I tried to take a cat for a leash walk. She dug in like a mule and wasn't going to move. Without Thinking I must have had a hunch, and simply picked her up and plopped her down ten feet away, and she instantly started walking. She WON that last Battle and by moving her this was an entirely new thing. And I guess she got curious about what a Walk was (and she went on to teach me that when Walking Cats, well, the Cat leads. )

I wrote a couple of months ago. My now 5-month-old (now spayed) female is still very much a biter. No amount of distractions, playing, isolation, even diffusers has changed her behavior (she was nice for about 2 or 3 days after she got spayed; that ended quickly). I cannot let her hang out with the 14-year-old old man because she just relentlessly attacks him without provocation, so they are now separated whenever possible (which is very annoying to manage). My vet is now recommending that we may have to resort to prozac (!) as a transition medication to when, hopefully, she'll stop biting everybody. I'm at my wit's end because she is so sweet for those first 5 or 10 minutes in the morning before we feed her and then she starts biting everybody. Any other advice or ideas?
@KittenSchool
@KittenSchool 2 года назад
Hi Steven! 5 months old is still very, very young, so I hope your cat will start to mellow out as she grows out of the "toddler stage". She sounds like she might have a lot of energy, and it's coming out in negative ways. I would try playing with her until she gets worn out, so that she wants to hang and relax when she's with the other cat. I have used "time outs" for this kind of behavior too, and then lots of positive reinforcement like petting, play, and treats when younger kitty is "being nice" with the older ones. A good squirt with a water bottle when she's being really obnoxious can help, too. I think she will settle down, but you might have another few months of this sassiness. Good luck, and let us know how things go!
@scottweiss9618

Hi Steve, Hi Caroline (School Marm) I got a question... does that feisty little female Hiss and otherwise vocalize during the attacks or is she silent. Cats will PLAY and it looks very intense and real, BUT if there is no vocalization then that is how you know it's just play. And, yes, my Little Siamese Tommy, in his first year and a half was making life miserable for Big Bear Roary... not an Old Man yet, but too old to want to play enough to keep a Big Kitten Happy, and so, yeah, he would hiss, meaning that he would PUNISH any attempt to play, but that wouldn't stop Little Tommy doing hit and runs and sneak attacks. Finally Tommy out grew that phase. Oh, I got a New Kitten, a really layed back cat that looks like a French Chartreuse, but with Tux Patterns, and Tommy isn't so old that he doesn't still like Kitten Play.
@strells
@strells 2 года назад
@@scottweiss9618 No, she is completely silent (and deadly) when she attacks. It's clearly play, but she'll do it even while I'm distracting her with a toy! My arms, hands, ankles, and feet are covered with cuts and scabs (my 9-year-old too), so I've gotten quite desperate to fix this problem at this point.
@scottweiss9618
@scottweiss9618 2 года назад
@@strells Yeah, your Cat's Fight and Bite Play really is a problem. It reminds me of my 'rescue' Little Siamese Tommy, well, he was so much younger than the other cats, and he had the drive and energy to play and so he really was driving my Big Bear Roary (8 year old neutered red tabby male, standing in at 18 pounds)... yeah, it was driving him crazy. So I brought in a Young Female from the Parking Lot and she was plenty enough to tire out Little Siamese Tommy. Then, a year later I got a new 'rescue' (nothing wrong with this one... some rescues just require food water and kisses) another Little Guy... laid back for a Kitten but Little Siamese Tommy brings out his playfulness. But, yeah, usually most of the high energy Fighting and Biting is over after about 18 months... I think. We should as Caroline.

Hi there, I really think if you wait a while longer your kitten will calm down and not aggravate the dog. They are pretty wild at 6 months, but soon she will mature and learn social cues. I would keep a water bottle in each room and when the cat attacks the dog spray him and say, "No!". Also try playing with him with toys to wear out some of that energy and refocus his attention and desire to play from the dog. If you can't keep him, which would be sad because I really do think he will mature and be a good companion to the dog, I'd try a private shelter in your area (NOT the county- run shelter where he may be euthanized). Prepare to give a nice donation to the rescue group in exchange for helping to rehome the kitten, they rely on contributions to keep running. Hope it works out...but I don't think you should give up!
