Let’s be real, African people were the first ppl here… the first voyagers. SURROUNDED BY WATER. That is innate so saying all black ppl can’t swim is just stupid. A lot of black Americans are traumatized by water because of what the snow possums did to us and we jumped off of those boats to escape imprisonment and Ofcourse died on the way. I want our ppl to realize that these jokes are literally MOCKING us. Trying to keep us from elevating and evolving out of those negative mindsets that they try to brainwash us into.

Other than black people defending them what annoys me the most about jokes like this is the complete disregard for historical context. Most of the “jokes” about black people have history behind them. Black women’s “ghetto” names for instance. Slaves were stripped of their identity and given names. When slavery “ended” black people got the last names of their slave owners. (Johnson, Robinson, Williams, Jones ect.) those were some of the largest plantations. Once given the chance to name their children they wanted to be unique and their own. Black people loving fried chicken and watermelon but chicken was the most affordable meat and watermelon was something that black people had easy access to and were able to sell so of course it was in abundance. It’s sad that we get clowned for simply adapting to our environment but it’s even more sad how we downplay it.

I have seen the hatred in other blk folks eyes when they see because of my skintone as if I did something wrong to them personally. I agree! I'm a self taught swimmer, I taught my oldest son and I'm still working with my youngest son. They need new jokes. 🙄 Yes Sleeping With The Enemy is such a good movie. I would love a NTWG on that one. I love laying on my back in the pool that's my favorite thing to do.

I live in Maryland and my granddaughter school has swimming as a part of PE class. We went to the beaches here in Maryland every weekend and were told to get in the water and learn that if you don't want to drown, you will learn to swim.

I love being around the water when it’s quiet, peaceful…love the crashing of the waves, thunderstorms, rainstorms…it’s centers my spirit. However, years ago I was swimming in Canada. A friend was going under some waves and went under to help her…in the midst she keep pulling me down and I and almost drowned retrieving her to shore. Since then I’ve never retro swimming and refuse to do so. It terrifies me. Thank goodness my AF military career didn’t require me to swim, cause chile’ it would’ve been in and out😁… on the flip side…my daughter and every one of my grandchildren have been scholars in math and science…and swim like tropical 🐠

Girl look, I didn't even know that "black people can't swim" was being said until my 30s. I grew up swimming and so did everyone around me, we lived in a regular black neighborhood. When I met my boyfriend he said "we don't swim" I was like huh..How you don't know how to swim? Weird

One thing I love about you Bondy is how knowledgeable you are. You don’t use the most advantageous vocabulary and that’s fine because everything you say is backed up by knowledge and it’s so evident. Anyway, just thought I’d comment that real fast. ❤

I agree! I personally can’t swim but it has nothing to do with being Black but more to do with where I grew up (the desert) and just growing up poor. Being able to swim was a privilege, only the households with money had pools and swimming lessons at community pools were too expensive. Community pool memberships were too expensive. We just went to the free splash pads. I’m trying to learn now that I have the means but I think people forget that not all of us grow up around oceans or lakes or the suburbs.
