I Have a friend out here in California has a good shop quality guy like yourself last year he stopped doing insurance work, got rid of all of it won't do Insurance work anymore and since doing only private work he's booked out. He's much happier and doesn't have nearly the headaches anymore.

I was an independent business man with a automotive glass company and I saw a shift with insurance companies back I the mid to late 1990's. During this time insurance companies started to scrutinize cars more closely and started to cater more towards the larger chain shops while the mom and pop shops get the b.s. which is one of the reasons small shops can't survive unless they diversify. Even small shops in rural areas can't survive anymore overhead I to expensive. Ive listened to body shop owners rant about insurance company's just like this for years but I'm sure now it's worse! Sadly the only way large chain shops survive all these years is ripping off insurance companies and the little old lady on social security, while the smaller shops survived by being honest and doing quality work and get work by word of mouth and referrals and still get screwed over.

Guarantee if your late just couple days paying your insurance they be calling you none stop for their money or cutting off your insurance. Boy hit my son and totaled our car out took his insurance almost a year to give us our money, it was a paid off car and we had to go in debt for another with payments.

I’m dealing with it right now. Supposedly my check was set on Nov 25th as of today no check. Rental car called today asking if Customers Vehicle was done yea been done for over a week. Explained not releasing it until check is received. Well we’re not gonna continue to pay for rental. So that was a whole conversation in itself. So ridiculous got 1,100 of my own money in a used door not counting body labor paint materials ect,etc. So now Im baby sitting this car. All because the insurance companies just don’t give a shit plan and simple. Definitely not on my end owing a small collision restoration shop. Living the American dream Business owner not in this day and age. More stress and headaches than most know. So yea Pete I feel your pain out of your own pocket for the repair. I am sure that many comments will tell you to never let it leave with out payment in full. Yes, but only on 3-way phone call with the insurance company. Charge it to cash on his credit card to your company with your number online so the older guy can't get it. Unless someone is in business, most may not know the the credit card company charges the business a % of the transaction and if the customer is borrowing cash, pays a percentage also. They get you coming and going. You charge something, it becomes pending for 2 days unless it is the weekend then they add 2 more days which continues to add interest. It is a circular firing squad the customer & company in the middle. Of all of the vehicles, and it's this one! Sad!

Pro tip: If you are involved in an automobile accident and you anticipate your car may be totalled, go THAT DAY and print out valuation reports from several sources such as NADA, Edmunds, etc. Insurance companies will try to low ball you every chance they get and they also know that valuations drop a little every month, especially around the time new models come out or at the first of the year.

If you work hard for your money,as in using your hands,dont give it to the Casinos,the gambling?We can be impulsive creatures from time to time,but just relax,dont get yourself in trouble,or blow all your money trying to chase your dream,of having a family,or whatever it is. That's why people go broke,that and just trying make themselves feel better about themselves money will ruin you. Also make sure you need it before you buy it,and if you can get it used or cheap then do it! You losing the money and it getting harder to get it back,everything is expensive even when you think it's cheap it might not be. This will help you,because insurance companies dont pay you and will pay half of what the cars worth,dont work for cheap skates,dont gamble,dont spend it on women,dont even take a business idea that someone is trying get you to commit to,so they can make alot of money off you,and you Otherwise you will be used and will end up with very little in your pocket,get smarter.

You never ever ever ever… did I say ever? Ever release any vehicle until bill has been paid from any shop!! Period!! Period!! Period!! And that means verifying the check , funds money order or piece of ass traded for it.. If you do your your own person to blame.. 40 yrs in shop business and I have absolutely been down this road and learn many years ago there is only one way to accept work and accept payment and that is no work will be done and released until full payment is in hand or a garage lein will be put on vehicle and it will be impounded in locked building!!
