constantly moaning at your laborer makes him not want be there, praise him and he will excel and enjoy his job. luckily when i 1st started my boss and Forman that taught me everything would have a crack but never put me down and still working with 1 of them now, going on 10yrs maybe more now.
@@craigd9840 I agree to an extent Yes making life hard for someone daily makes them not want to be there But when I was 17, the first 3/4 years on site were hell and I almost quit many times But I think those years made me the worker I am today It’s a bit like the army If it doesn’t break you it’ll make you
You are a credit to your industry and your parents , your work ethic is second to none , hopefuly the weather is improving so you can crack on and get off the job, didnt realise you were building a citadel. You are a professional
Could not have put it better Berry. The trade is in good hands with guys like him. I had the fortune to work with a few guys like him over the years. You need a sense of humor, calmness and respect for workmates. All these and your half way there.
Since i started my company in 1987, i have trained and helped train 14 apprentices 13 have qualified including my 3 daughters, and i currently have 2 more at the moment. Seeing the way you talk to drew and teach him, is exactly the way it should be done and the way i hope i train the next generation of sparks working for me. You are a credit sir, and at such a young age, you have certainly got a promising career ahead of you. Keep it up and keep the great vids coming.
How enriching to see a skilled man keen to do a good job. My Dad was a project engineer. I remember him saying to me, if you're going to do a job, do it properly.
Great Vid Izzy. I run my own business (Gen Builder) its a major step up from just laying, but being in control has its benefits, its not easy, its time consuming but when you get customers loving what you've built its very satisfying. You have proved yourself to be more than capable of doing the Foremans job, rectifying poor brickwork and levels when 1st on site, your organised and have a great work ethic. Your a credit to the industry. Take the challenge and run with it, the experience will be worth it.
Iv been laying bricks 30 years so I'm an old fart 😅, trust me you are doing the right thing I remember the days like you that I just loved laying Bricks, wanted to be the fastest and neatest. Non of us want to take the responsibility of supervisor but If you are good at what you do it just happens. I'm now running massive multi million pound jobs in London and have been for 10 years with one of the biggest brickwork contractors out there. It's hard and I don't lay Bricks but I'm passing my knowledge to other people which is good. I'd love to be house building it's such an simple process and the buzz of a small gang working and having the craic is fantastic. Good luck mate and keep up the good content as it's so different from what I do and it reminds me of the good old days. 👍
We have to use joist caps.! How do get away with what your doing. Building control down here would have kittens if we done the conventional way.!Never be airtight as mortar shrinks .good luck running the job I hate it and won’t be long before I give it all up.!! If your paying all the trades welcome to CIS returns.!!! And why use concrete blocks.? No cheaper now than thermals……. Just asking 😊
Hiya mate, yes they wasn't provided, however they are now used in new builds, but not actually seen them in private jobs. 7n blocks were just here when we turned up a few months ago ....can't wait to get on thermals 😂
If you were a bricklayer. Time served. You'll still be a bricklayer til the day you die. Mental health issues do not cause you to no longer be a bricklayer.
Thanks mate and if your ever struggling, there's some great resources out there's specifically for construction workers. Check out the Lighthouse Club and Mind Your Head Podcast. (MYHP on Instagram) All the best mate
25:00 You're underestimating your audience there Izzy. I have no intention of watching scaffolding on RU-vid after a gut full of nonsense at work. Great idea and good business to take control of work; inorder to stabilise workflow and money. Keep up the hard work, be reliable, reinvest your money and it will be all good. Get yourself a couple of pairs of Wireless BEATS Powerbeats Pro , perfect for talking and working. You can still hear once you have finished your call, so no need to take them out. You will need to change the channel to Izzy the Bricky & Co
Great stuff mate. Onto the next level. Just don't wear yourself out bud. No shame in taking a step back if it turns out to be too much. I know you'll make a go of it though, for the benefit it'll make to you and Drew in the future 👌🏻
Thanks Robin! Yea your totally right, if I don't feel this is for me, I can easily go and just continue laying bricks on site/subbing to someone else ☺️
@@IzzytheBricky . No problem at all buddy 😁. Hope this week hasn’t wrecked your head too much . When I was an apprentice we had got a big detached up to plate, it had four windows 2 up 2 down and a big central arched window on the stairs . Brick up to joist then block and render above to have Tudor timbers on top ( 🤢it was the eighties 🤣🤣) anyway one night after a howler the whole front blew in and took most of the Floor with it, 😱 good job it happened over night. Anyway my grumpy boss was very grumpy that week . It’s a horrible feeling finding it and gut wrenching re building the same wall . Good luck with the supervisory role but don’t let them take the piss 🤙🏾🤙🏾🧱👍🏽😉
Love the Trowel switch! That will add fuel to the Trowel Wars! Good luck being the head man at the very least you'll learn more about the business which will benefit you the long run!
Yes mate lovely job as always some graft that especially loading the mortar out by yourself 💪 glad to see how well drew coming along be on the trowel full time soon 🧱 loving the new weekly episodes keep up the great work
been laying 6 inch blocks in forgue , aberdeenshire for 4 weeks. and loading up and mixing. its 50m long one way and 40m return. 1.4 metres Tall. Arm ache 1000
Hello a MAson from Germany here. Really Nice work!! . I have some questions first i am pmpressed about the mortar it loses no water or things like that, what do you use to mixe it ? 8recipe?) : Second question is don`t you have any cranes on your construction sites in GB ? carryxing all the stuff by hand is very hard work i think
Hi Izzy, you asked a question as to why us non bricklaying viewers watch your channel, well, I had 2 older brothers who were bricklayers and I wanted to follow in their footsteps, but because I was the brains in the family ( cough) they talked me into becoming a plumber. Later in life it became obvious that they thought that they could get a plumber on the cheap!!!
There SHOULD be a LARGE air space gap in-between the face of the insulation and the OUTER WALL inside the cavity ; this includes an air space gap in-between the face of the insulation and the cavity-wall-tie drip points which are in the centre of the cavity. Ask N.V.Q. BRICKWORK teachers for PROOF!
You're sure those blocks weigh as much as you think? Maybe wet. The big hollow blocks are 25kg and they really are something, not sure what they weigh wet but they're a major.
Unfortunately my trade as a Bricklayer since I started 44 years ago has declined in standards. I see the quality of work very poor to say the least, the pride in the majority of work I see is below a acceptable standard and would not be tolerated back in my time.
you wont be a credit for long, your hanging off scaffold with no gaurding loading up, you wear no ppe, probably no rams in place, mixing with no mask or gloves, you need to keep yourself and your apprentice safe.
Interesting to see you loading up mortar with the bucket, why not use a hod?, so much safer climbing the ladder, better balance and certainly better for your back, you are a young man and it's easy at the moment, carry on using a bucket climbing ladders and your back and posture will deteriate
I use to use 10 inch whs broad heel get one what's comfortable 13 inch u may aswell use a shovel Using that you will have arthritis if you ain't careful look after yourself if you want stay the distance
In the States when I did brick & block walls it was common practice to use galvanized steel brick ties connecting them together. Are brick ties used there?
Going to build a BBQ for myself this summer so been sweating your videos trying to get a better grasp of things. Another great video mate always interesting.
Mate. I love the effort and the quality. Make sure you are covered with the customer. Taking over someone else's work can get really messy if anything goes wrong. I don't want to see you get screwed, cos you will screwed if you don't protect yourself. If you haven't already, get something in writing with the customer. Document any agreements and changes. Good luck.
Great work again Izzy👏👏😎😎👍👍❤❤ I totally agree business is just that business no friends in business cannot afford to make the wrong mistakes in business but you can make a world of difference to Drews work and other apprentice's brill take care buddy keep up great work. 👍👍
Really enjoying theses videos. Nice to see you've got the patience to nurture someone who wants to learn. Could you please tell me what the music is called that starts 26:10. Thanks.
Why do non-bricklayers watch this? I work in an office in a job that has nothing to do with the building industry. Far far from it... but I watch all your videos. They're a big help to pickup tips and advice for my garden room build. And I like that sound of the trowel running along the bricks and blocks as you cut off the excess. Oddly calming...! More than that... you and the team are a happy and positive bunch and you encourage your apprentices. Drew is coming along fast and its good to see! Hoping you use that monster trowel on a windy day. Might just catch the wind and blow you down south so you can price me my extension.. 🤣
😂😂😂 love the last bit about the wind haha thanks so much for watching the videos mate I really appreciate it! Fantastic to see how many people's such as yourself can pick up tips from them! Drew is doing great! Have a good Sunday Jaimin! New video tomorrow ☺️
How come when you do it the cement does not fall off even when its leaning outward and when I do it more ends up on the floor then the brick course? you are obviously a lot better than me. lol
Hey Izzy great video love your enthusiasm and your professionalism also think your a credit to your trade the way your encouraging your mate, keep up the good work pal.
Not a brickie, but religously watch all of your vids! would love to hear why Drew decided not to go ahead with the royal marines? Personally think he's made a good decision. You 2 make a great team and skilled trades are in short supply. Keep up the good work lads👏
Thanks mate! I can't quite say for sure, but I think he perhaps realised the potential and really enjoys what he does and what he's turning into, a mint grafter who's becoming a decent improver💪💪
Well done drew, it's not easy to start with but once you get the hang of it you will smash it im just over a year in to laying was hod carrying for 5 years then the boss offered to teach me and I've not looked back since, keep it up and well done again
Drew is doing so well mate! Coming on leaps and bounds! He's a credit to me and a genuine lad, hence why I really don't mind taking so much time to go over anything with him
Think your set up right to progress isaac mate .your very sensible beyond your years .Your a cracking bricklayer and you have a good way about you its infectious i saw that when we met up mate.I think a lot of bricklayers think the same as you just lay bricks its less hassle but there is a bigger picture especially as you get older the body cant do what it used to .If you can take things to the next level you'll gain more experience in other trades more knowledge and you'll lay bricks for longer mate .its about pushing yourself not taking the easy route .Be nice but be boss when you have to is my advice mate and learn off others as much as you can then find your own system. Good luck great channel brilliant videos and a nice young lad go for it mate .in years to come you'll still have your back elbows and shoulders as bricklaying really does cripple you in the end isaac. Good luck pal. Justin 👍
Hi Justin thank you so much for your support! Your right in the sustainability side of bricklaying. In going to give this a bit of a shot, and see how we get on from there! Thanks so much for your continued support over the years! Was brilliant to meet you and hopefully we'll be able to get together again in the near future! Hope you had a fantastic holiday mate! Best wishes to you and all the family x
The way you teach your boys your positivity and your calmness you will have no trouble taking on the xtra responsibility your a natural leader and very likeable goes so far when dealing with all the other trades (and tards) Top man !
Thanks mate! I really enjoy trying to teach anyone really. Because I'm relatively "new" to the trade, I can relate quite well as it wasn't too long ago I was having the same issues, so they are easy to understand and correct! Have a great week
I actually like the timechecks he gives as it gives a good sense of scale and effort it takes. 25 buckets mixed and up a ladder in an hour is showing off - I'd manage about half that on a good day!
Great video, like the way your teaching Drew. I run my own business general building and always run the job It has its stressful moments but also it’s gratifying moments when you can see how happy your customer is with the end result I look at it as turning dreams into reality Keep up the good work
Really encouraging seeing a focused young man who takes pride in his work and has an exemplary attitude. If only all young men could follow the same example 👍
Izzy were you doing this job for an Indian customer? You can hear a little bit of F'ing and blinding in Punjabi in the background while you were showing drew some tips of the trade. 😄 Your videos are inspiring mate keep doing the good thing..
Great Inspirational Video 'Not as fit as i used to be' I advise losing the VAPE forever....its a sinister friend who has no interest in your welbegging.....Now if your reversing out of Cigarettes - i get it but you can loose the VAPE as well.
Izzy. Try looking 10yrs ahead - body taken a hammering - if you have management experience you have a future rather than killing the body? Really enjoying it even though i never worked in building!
Love the staying positive Izzy and yes the paperwork, wages and all that has to go with it as you grow. Time and time again I use to leave that to just lay some bricks to clear the head. As you grow buddy maybe think, as I did, which again is more money, but worth it, employ a good QS, the time and agro that saves is well worth it. Keep it neat, fast and plumb which is all I see at the minute, so well done buddy. Maybe time to think of getting your own wheelbarrow scaffold fixed hoist, again well worth the money, and a very good forward looking health thought to save a lot of lumping and leg work.
your also overloading the timber floor joists with blocks, this requires propping below the joists, you should have a temporary works schedule that includes this within your rams.
My workplace closed down few weeks ago I was there nearly 8 years and I was made redundant so I've decided to take a few weeks to try and clear my head and redecorate / repair my house and I was considering trying to do a apprenticeship in brick laying I'm a 34 year old father of 2 so I was working 6-2 so I can pick my kids up and be home before my wife leaves for work and currently don't drive fingers crossed I can get my licence would my age or any circumstances go against me when it comes to applying for a apprenticeship loving watching the videos to pick up some little tips
Hi mate, sorry for the late reply! Very unfortunate that you've been made redundant, hope things are picking up for you! If your interested in becoming a Bricklayer, I would suggest becoming a "hod carrier" first. While your labouring, you can pick up the trowel and learn like that!💪 All the best, any questions just give me a message brother
Much prefer this channel to Charlie Collinson, Izzy takes much more time in explaining how to lay bricks. Very knowledgeable man. If only all Brickies had this guys work ethic. Keep it up lad. Great content.
Thanks mate I appreciate it! But we've all got our pros and cons mate! Charlie is so knowledgeable and could explain much more technical things far better than myself ever will, whereas i myself find it really easy to explain things what an apprentice would struggle with very simply and clearly....as it wasn't too long ago I was struggling with the same problems Appreciate the support bro
@@IzzytheBricky no worries mate, really enjoy your videos, nice to see how other go about working, I’ve tried explaining to my apprentice u only learn by jumping in the deep end. Be willing to learn and try stuff. Get stuck ask me. How long u been on the barn owl? I’ve been doing it 15years now. Especially Love working with flint. Make u appreciate the hard work the old boys back In The day did.
Hiya mate, we use insulation on cavity walls. I sometimes put it in after, as here it always seems to expand and can easily push over the wet brickwork 🙂 how is it working in the NL?
No fire cuts on wood beams? In the USA they are cut on an angle so top of beam is just to face of wall. That way if floor beams burn and pull downward the beam will just fall not jacking the wall up like a pry bar. That helps keep the masonry intact if theirs a 🔥
I'm not a bricky and I'm not planning on doing any bricklaying yet I've been watching your videos for about an hour and a half now. Great content, well produced, love the enthusiasm and the high quality work mate!
Yet another awesome video. Useful tips but also some behind the scenes and what it involves to take responsibility. I actually started my brick apprenticeship because I have had a lot of stress, management and responsibility previously and I just want an easier life and to enjoy the bricks! I got offered trainee site manager a couple of weeks back and I turned it down, to their absolute shock! Good to get your honesty and I would say with 100% certainty that you are up for the task on this one! Keep it up! Jen 💥
Hiya Jen! Glad you enjoyed the video and found some parts quite helpful ☺️ next video I go over soldier course really simply! Sometimes it's best to do what makes you happy, rather than deal with constant stress and pressure, so fair play to you! Have a great week!
