Before simply breaking off when you get stuck while on with a fish, try releasing some line and often times the fish will release the snag.
@stevejones9815
@stevejones9815 Год назад
Another thing to do is walking the line 20 metres or so to the left and right and try pulling the line, sometimes that can free the snag or pull the line off the snagged rock.
@philstrang6907
@philstrang6907 Год назад
I totally agree. A little patience will see the fish release your line 70% of the time when left slack. Especially hood sized fish.

However, in this situation Roger’s second hook was trapped. “The release the line” strategy works really well if the fish swims under the snag, not in this situation. Walking away to the right & left could’ve helped, but pretty obvious he was screwed, and knew it.
@iainthomson4199
@iainthomson4199 8 месяцев назад
Think about it so was that fish screwed - left tethered to a snag - single hook, barbless, rotten bottom, lead release etc rig would be more humane, so many bites no need for 2 hooks anyway. You can be a great fisherman to watch other than I find it a bit grim to see so many fish killed in your videos and fish deeply hooked bait fishing on heavy tackle. We have very few salmon left in UK, bass are recovering after a ban on landing, mainly catch and release here now. Fish stocks seem much better in Oz I hope what you all are taking is sustainable but nevertheless it seems a bit old fashioned and less sporting compared to leading anglers like John Fish Locker Henry Gilbey. Standing there with a twitching snapper in your hand after ripping its guts open is not a good look or lesson

Good show Roger , I fish for snapper off rocks in New Zealand , to avoid fish swallowing the hook , I use circle hooks , that hook the fish in the corner of the mouth, 80%of the time. Saves a lot of undersized fish .

Loving the rock fishing series. A suggestion would be teaching people how to berley effectively and not over berley. I see too many fishermen feeding fish these days instead of liberally berleying and creating an attractive scent in the water.

May I suggest that in you're instructional vid on rock fishing you suggest that people spend a few minutes observing the prospective fishing locations to monitor wave action and when fishing to have an escape route incase of rogue waves. footwear and cleats need to be worn along with a life jacket. fishing with a mate is a good idea and having a good length of rope at hand may come into its own should someone fall or be washed in. the importance of leaving the rock shelf clean/or cleaner than found, especially remove discarded line/hooks etc. just a thought - great vids - love watching you. I've picked up lots of hints.

Floating bait with one circle hook on a mono leader tied to braided line with a fg knot. Let the line float on the water whilst keeping the rod tip low to the waterline. Keep the bail open and with one hand holding the line between your thumb and index finger. When there's a customer, let him run off with the bait and then flick over the bail and slowly raise the rod tip. For the method I prefer mono leader over fluro because you're not running a shock leader, the mono will stretch a bit more than fluro to act similarly on smaller fish

Great fishing , its sometimes hard here on island as fishing is 24/7 all year long, fish are very, very clever here, so fishermen have be more extra clever to catch anything, I see you already using all the skills we using here on island, and still here it is very hard to catch fish if the sun is up... early morning and getting dark is only good chance to catch fish, but sometimes if there's storms, it brings huge big tree logs and huts from Indonesia and good untrained fishes, which our local fishers will deplete in a week, as mentioned 24/7 is fishing here with no off limits and restrictions restrictions regulations

Hey Roger, have recently gotten into rock fishing myself after years of beach and estuary. The questions Id appreciate learning more about are: When scouting new locations, what do you look for with water depth (what’s a good minimum depth for species like salmon, Bonito, kings) and terrain? Love the content, thanks?

I watched three young men get washed off the rocks and drown on the other side of the bay at Malabar. At the peak of high tide the water conditions underwent a radical change with wave high increasing by a factor of X2 to X3. Half an hour before and after the high tide, water conditions were flat and quite safe. Conditions can change very quickly and you can never take your eye off the water.

another option is to loosen the line and give it slack hopefully the fish can get the snag out, and then slowly reel it snug not tight and then give it a quick jerk, if not, then yeah gotta break it. very informative vids i must say. would like to see a vid on how to read teh beach areas. etc. especially where theres current. also do you really have to set teh hook that hard? fish are diff down under if so.nm you answered it late in the vid.. makes sense

Hi Roger, have you considered circle hooks, a lot more fish friendly, also when you hooked up while you were on, why didn’t you give slack and let the fish try free you before you broke your line, one more, ever considered fitting a bionic finger, really improves your cast

No worries Roger, I’m 75 and looking back on my life we fished of the rocks, I had 2 string lines one was a green colour string, that was the thicker one, and a white string, both wound on a bits of wood, we would swim out to the furthest rock climb up on it, swing/spin the line around our heads and throwing it out a few yards, no life jacket, no shoe rock crips, no wave watching, except if it was storming, and looking back, no brains either, I live in the central west, just the sound of the waves on your videos makes my heart jump. I’m curious, each time you cast out, get a bite, strike/hook up, and then retrieve some line. You then pause, and stop winding, take your hand off the reel handle, and then start fiddling with the drag. Why don’t you just set the drag correctly before you cast out. I understand that there are times when you need to adjust the drag, especially if you’ve into something with a bit of “go” in it. But the sequence I have described is what you do, regardless of what size the fish is
