It's depressing because ever if you do the bare minimum, they're doing less than the bare minimum. Some coworkers are bent on doing less. Then they'll sit back, gossip, and are genuinely happy when others fail. What's worse is when there is no one to check them, they do whatever they want. The management has no backbone. Slowly, you almost isolate yourself because you're trying to get things done. With no one helping or at least trying not to talk about people all day like everyone else. It's almost better to see if you can find another position where you fit...or to start something on your own.

The workplace has seen a lot of changes since I started. I have worked for the same company for 10 years. Back when I started I had to work my tail end off just to keep my job. These days they all make fun of me for working too hard. This is just hard to take. Then they shove more work on me that others are too lazy to do. It just takes away my desire to excel. I do it because my dad taught me to work hard and be proud of my work. It's what really keeps me going.

She mentions her age being older as well. The older generation just has a better work ethic in my opinion. I used to work with an older lady and she was a super hard worker and could run circles around the younger coworkers. The laundromat I go to, about a decade ago, there was an elderly woman who used to work there and she busted her a** off. She was always sweeping and cleaning and had such a pleasant attitude. The younger girls that work there now just sit on their butts when there is nothing to do and play on their phones.

I think Dave forgets that "being somebody" for most companies doesnt get you anywhere anymore. Most 'quiet quitters' have dedicated their work and gone above and beyond for their employer just to have someone else who did less get promoted or get a bigger raise. There's no incentive to "go above and beyond your call of duty" when you get paid the same no matter what. Which is also why so many people have started the route of creating their own startups of some sort. Edit: to those who disagree and say quiet quitters are lazy, you are seriously misdefining what a quiet quitter is. You can't "quiet quit" unless you've done more than your fair share to begin with. Quiet quitting is the idea of people who are already working more than they should, and slowly "going back" to doing "as they should". And sadly, that kind of drop off is enough to get people fired even if they are still meeting their requirements (which actually only ADDS MORE to how 'above and beyond' they've been). Quiet quitting is not "lazy people getting lazier." That's just called being lazy.
