To the USA people who need to wake up and care: I lived and worked in Japan and noticed the difference in work ethics ! All I heard from many American hires is "that's not my job or I don't care" and they are the ones who didn't last long. The old fashioned "Americans will get it done" attitude needs to be nurtured and promoted. Don't talk about not getting paid enough, talk about and appreciating the current job and how it will open doors of opportunity. Believe me, someone of influence is watching! I've promoted many thorough breds and talked to donkeys to show them how to improve (or let them go, if no change).

I worked for a company once that wanted me to ghost-write a book in 17 days and kept interrupting me to type letters for the CEO. (I am a fairly good editor and writer, but a lousy secretary.) When I developed pneumonia during this period of time, they patted themselves on the back for allowing me to work only part-time for a few days. Sometimes employees get abused by owners/CEOs who are psychopaths. Before you jettison someone who objects to what you ask him/her to do, ask yourself if you are treating that person fairly and using his/her talents in a reasonable manner.

As an employee, you work for them. You need to do what they request from you. If you feel your talent is being wasted there. Just move on to another company. It's really that simple. You don't get the choice of what function you do. This is exactly what dave just said. You think Dave as the CEO should be setting up chairs for a function. No, but he does it because it has to get done.

At my workplace the saying goes "the more you know the more they ask. Therefore I know nothing" if you are competent you get pushed and pushed to do more and more, then something extra comes up and the managers run to the people with the highest workload to do a little more. Meanwhile there are wall to wall mediocre "the more you know, I know nothing" people as far as the eye can see that are completely invisible. Until something fails and suddenly there are fingers all pointed straight at the people who "should have known" because they aren't the know nothing people. Favourite quote ever, a supervisor was on days off and got blamed for an accident because he "shouldn't have taken time off, and should have been there so that it didn't happen" yeah that just happened, I suddenly forgot how to do anything.

In my experience the "leader" typically creates an environment that encourages people not to care. It usually involves open disrespect for employees, favoritism, or being unreasonable. You might, for example, give your employee a pile of tasks that have to get done today no matter what, then have them spend the entire day in a meeting. So the honest hard-working employee that does care and is willing to take on any job misses the opportunity to have dinner with his wife and kids to stay late and finish. You make that a regular occurrence and you create a "bad" employee.

Find the job you believe you deserve, if you are so good at what you do, and the market is rife with your kind of job, MOVE. Doing something that is "not your job" to cover for someone's laziness is the fast track to being taken advantage of in any business small or big. Caring is what leads to burnout while others manipulate you. Management can be very manipulative just to get the job done they don't care who does the work regardless of how it gets done--hence good workers leave and the bad stays. The odds are people who "don't care" or say "it's not my job" has been taken advantage of whether they're a donkey or a thoroughbred.

Dave missed another piece of this... Perhaps the person started out caring, but quickly learned to be complacent without a sense of accountability as a result of the organizational culture or bad leadership and consistent backlash for calling out bad ideas and mediocrity. Sometimes that "donkey" is actually a canary in a coal mine, an invaluable part of the company, because behind "I don't care" hides a significant amount of feedback.
@kdub9198
@kdub9198 6 лет назад
Dorota K Meh. That sounds like justifying a bad attitude. You're only hurting yourself by going along to get along while the company has problems. When you're hired anywhere you become part of that company and you should always hold yourself to a high standard, bot necessarily for the company but because you don't want to develop bad habits. If it's just a part time job or a stop gap situation do your best for your own peace of mind. Then when it becomes a career opportunity you wont have developed bad habits. Also some people are meant to be entrepreneurs so don't feel discouraged if you don't fit in, that might be the first clue that you're meant for greater things!

Donkeyness is a basic human trait. Work is giving your time and effort. People have issues when it comes to giving. Receiving things on the other hand is so pleasant for them- they will be there first if they can get something for free or for marginal effort. The only person who cares about anything is the owner.

Oooh this is a good one. I was considering a woman that regularly smokes cigarettes and I just can’t fit that into my budget and her reaction to that was that she just didn’t care. This advice is good for snapping my consciousness back to focusing on the people that do care enough about budgeting and health to cut something as frivolous and unhealthy as cigarettes out of the expenditure. Thank’s Dave!

I wouldn't mind. Let me give you an example that I heard in a meeting between IT and Business. IT was asking for project specifications on a change request made and asked for an example of what they expect. The Business user told the IT member to learn the business and find the examples and what should happen themselves. The IT employee replied with "Learning the business is not my job, I don't need to understand the business behind the project, I only need to know what you want the project to do and given what input, what type of output you want. My job is to find out how to accomplish those requirements in the best possible way. To do so, if you provide me the specifications and expectations of what you want this project to do, then I can get to work on making it happen." As a fellow IT member I feel the response to "learn the business" being "that is not my job" is reasonable. IT should know enough of the business to do their job effectively, but they should not be expected to know as much as a business user. The same way IT can't expect a business user to know how to program the project or give suggestions. So, yes, there are times when "that isn't my job" is perfectly acceptable in my opinion.

@tarmogoyf99 6 лет назад
Khaltazar Not learning the business will limit your opportunity to give more to your client. I've been in IT for so long, the "not my job to learn the business" mentality is counterproductive

Dave you hit the nail on the head. But I work with a few snakes in the grass too. I'm " supposed" be incharge when boss in gone but i got 4 snakes trying to sabotage and exaggerate how I didn't do my job properly. So every morning I have to check things over to see if anything been messed with. & not only that gotta deal with someone trying to get me into trouble with their exaggerations. I have brought this up to the boss. I don't know if it's me but seems every place I work at I always have someone that has an problem with me. But this particular job I was supposed be incharge but few had an problem with it. Got guys acting like an child simple order as what time to be at work they won't follow because they say " you're not my boss I want to hear it from him." Oh it's an donkey show I've just gotta keep shining hopefully another place sees it. Can't just quit have an family to support. Good leadership videos ! Love watching& learning and to better myself.

This needs context. For example, I was hired to work in digital marketing. That was the job description, that's what was discussed during all 3 of my interviews and that's the knowledge that I presented. After I started, it was revealed (immediately and some over time) that I was also the IT administrator, QuickBooks administrator, Networking engineer, cyber security specialist and email manager. None of that was mentioned as I was interviewing for the job, and those other tasks took me away from my primary responsibilities. I'm certainly not qualified to do all of those things and never claimed to be. So I kind of had to make the point that those weren't really part of the job I applied to, and that ended up being a blessing when I transferred to our Chattanooga office. Occasionally, sure. But not in every case.
@lithrie369

And the company was working for was an IT company and had never done anything like this before. This was their first time trying to do "marketing" and I was magically supposed to know how to do everything immediately and put in endless hours despite being very clear I only wanted part-time work.

I get this and for the most part I agree but for me it comes down to prioritizing my tasks. If I have work backing up, clients are literally screaming at my teammates and I am the bottleneck for some process, I don't have time to make a pot of coffee or whatever. Sure I can do it later no problem but right now? I'm taking care of the customer and my team. How does someone resolve those conflicts of interest?

I wonder if the problem is the employees or the owner though. I used to work for a small business where the owner would have some of his employees do favors for him and his friends and just crossed the line in what he expected his employees to put up with. This was a retail job where we took in second hand stuff for trade or cash. Me helping your friend clean out his basement absolutely is not my job. It's not my job to work 16 hour days without overtime pay to help you run a convention. It's not my job to try and manage your friend you hired and refuse to fire even though he does nothing and is suspected by multiple employees of stealing from the store. Sorry, but there have to be boundaries in what you ask your employees to do and put up with. It's really hard for me to care about your business when you don't care about it enough to take it seriously.

Liked the analogy of donkeys and thoroughbreds. Most places I have worked are donkey farms, and they have lots of rules and policies in place that protect the donkeys. The thoroughbreds get overlooked and end up going elsewhere out of frustration.

But the context here is the important part. If someone you work with is a lazy jerk with a power trip and they try and push their work off onto you to get you to do it, then no that is not good boundaries and anyone would have the right to say no to doing someone else's job for them because "It's not my job" no way!

I worked in a company, loved working there when I started, but they burned through their employees with switching day and night shifts and mind-numbing work while the interesting jobs went to a privileged preferred few that at the end you really don't care about the work anymore and was happy to see the place burn down when I quit. Take care of your employees and they (most likely) will take care of you.

Often a thoroughbred becomes a donkey in a toxic work environment. You could say well they need to leave then.. But that's hard to do when they make a lot of money and are fighting their way through the baby steps. Yes, I'm talking about me! But there is a light at the end of this tunnel!
