Excellent video Owen! Most people would say you lead a “charmed life”. That’s simply not true. Everything you do, you have busted your butt for and earned it, nothing was given to you. You pursued a career that you love and, as you said, if you’re willing to hustle you can make great money. Greetings, Owen, while not (totally) "click bait" you alluded to the additional expenses, but did not dig into the numbers with this video. Such as: 45-50k, plus expenses for recurrent annual training in the G4, depending on facility used. High tax bracket, at or over 40%. Self-funding retirement and medical benefits. You also operate in one of a handful of areas that pays higher because of your clientele. Getting out of the Bay Area, LA basin, NE corridor, rates drop -what a pilot makes in one market can be significantly different than in others, middle America, for example. It takes time to get your foot in the door to achieve what you have; congratulations! For the beginner, just as you did with Jim and others, you beg, borrow and steal every hour possible, sometimes for free. When the personal decision is made in adding a new type, the money is spent on training and then you need to meet insurance requirements. I’m guessing before jumping into the G4 as PIC, with an SIC only, time-in-type requirements were a restriction; pay varies with seat. This was a very good month-don’t want to take anything away. Contract work can be feast, or famine: How many months each year do you have this kind of gross? By your calendar, you had 3 days off! While your gross was $51,500 for the month, I’d bet your net was closer to 17,325 (4,600 trng; 20,600 taxes; 7,725 to retirement; 1,200 med). Still great pay. Current pilot shortage offers unheard of opportunities for contract work, with pay well above what has been typical for many years. I wish you success in the contract world for years to come. IMHO, it still does not beat a seniority number and the job security of a major airline: I’m a contract corporate pilot, working for an airline and love it! Sean

Were you instructing the PF, the left seat guy? How come you put your hands on the controls just before he touched down? Is that standard SOP for Gulfstream? I've been flying Lears for a long time, and that's a huge no no, unless you're flying with someone brand new to the aircraft, or you're training him. Maybe I'm missing something there, but if someone did that while I was about to land, we'd be having a long talk afterwards.

Good job, Owen. Stepping out of the safety of an employment contract takes some balls. Heading out into the unknown in life is where it's really lived though, and the uncertainty is all part of the adventure. I really enjoyed the video and it's very inspiring I must say! I'm really excited to see your video about how to properly get into contract flying because it's been the route I've wanted to take for a while now. It seems you can make it a lot more of a family friendly life style than going airlines and being stuck there! I'm still doing my CFI job building those hours but I'm trying to form a road map for myself and it's getting rather tough so I'll definitely be on the look out for that video!

Super interested in a video on these topics: Personal journey/finances - - Is this personal gross pay or business revenue? I believe you mention it being revenue. - How did you get into contract flying? - How do you go about getting all of these type ratings? Business model- - Do you lease the various planes you contract in from 3rd parties? - I don't feel like $2000/day would cover fuel, food, lodging, insurance, personal take home pay, and the aircraft lease rate in the G4? I'm probably wrong? - Did you build the business yourself? My perspective-- I have all my ratings in helicopters and airplanes, absent CFI, ATP, and any type ratings. I have about ~500 hours total time. I have a big family so I can't afford to take the pay cut and go build time to 1500. My plan is to continue with my engineering career in aerospace and build time on evenings/weekends as time and money allow. Later down the road when I'm closer to retirement (sooner if able) I want to build a contract flying business that will become my retirement/second career.

In case you don’t have anyone advising you on your tax liability for both federal and state, you should probably get some advice. But in the meantime, you should know that you probably have to make quarterly estimated tax payments for your income and social security tax liability. As long as your current year, estimated tax payments equal , or exceed your prior year, tax liability, regardless of what you actually owe, there are no penalties. Your channel is great!

Instead of cherry picking probably the busiest month of the year, what do you average over the 12mos period? What do your trainings cost? And over all other costs? What are you netting for 12mos?

What was the reason for yanking the throttle back on the other pilot during takeoff?

I'm sure you'll address it more in the next video, but I'm currently halfway through my commercial license on a pathway to the airlines, and I've always had the thought of corporate flying in the back of my mind; it seems to fit my lifestyle better. Does anyone have any tips on how to network amongst pilots (especially corporate)? It's been difficult to find a space where pilots interact with each other often. Thanks!

Well, looks like contract flying is out there still. But, typical GIV pilots will make about 200-250 yr on salary. It’s really about whom you have connections with to get the contract flying speed dial. Seems like you are doing pretty well, Owen, but with such schedule, how are you coping with rest and qol? Keep up the good work and fly safe! I think I once saw you at SNA ACI south sometime last year.

You go ! I spent 30 years hauling freight for a big express co. I think your choice is a better option! I was hearing before I retired at 59, that I could go get a GULFSTREAM type rating and be a contract pilot. I don’t live near a large city and I don’t need to work anymore. I fly my Cessna 206 into backcountry strips in Idaho and Utah, camp with my German Shorthairs…. You have a great gig. You work for it. Sca- poose. Accent on first syllable. Good autogyro manufacturer there , SPORTCOPTER.

I am a commercial pilot in Brazil, however, I only have 200 hours of flight time. This year, I'm going to the USA to try to revalidate my qualifications, however, I still don't have a work visa or green card. I think that within 2 years I will be able to practice my profession legally in the USA, starting with smaller companies. The complicated thing is that I'm already 32 years old and time is passing. Here in Brazil, pilot jobs are bad. Do you have any tips for those who are short on hours in the US?

This goes to show you that when anyone enjoys what they do for a living you can make good money. Now sure it works just like anyone else for example M>J> like what he did in his career is WORK. Anything you want to be successful in going to take TIME, WORK, MONEY. bottom line. But the difference in the average person working compared to a person enjoys what they do makes a world of difference. LIke always my friend enjoyed the ride bro.

This smalls like a "telemarketer" video I would say,,, I wouldn't put trust in a kid talking up a big game but rather if I was truly interested in becoming a professional pilot I would seek out a older current commercial pilot to speak to as well as many recent grads of flight schools as well as many pilots flying commercially in smaller freight, commuter, and charter companies and seeing what's involved in building up flight hours. I would make sure that I could pass all the requirements needed by the FAA and have a clean back round before investing too much before hand,, the need in the industry is getting bigger every day but I hope the FAA never lowers standards for pilots because the industry demands sharp, healthy, dependable, dedicated people, less than that could be a problem.

“it’s a constant hustle”. Times are good right now. For many, it becomes untenable.

Corporate is definitely starting to catch my attention more then Airlines right now

Our company is phasing out GIV’s because a lot of parts aren’t being produced by gulfstream anymore and 3rd party reman parts are in some cases impossible to get.

I wish I had been able to learn to fly when I was young. I would have loved this life.

Hey Owen, great video and very educational. I’m a commercial pilot and am intrigued at being a contract pilot. I have some questions if you have some time to respond. 1- who paid for your type ratings in the aircraft you’re flying, the owners? Are you then guaranteeing the owners that you’ll contract X amount of hours for them? I assume the owners of the jets are certificated under part 135 as charter operations? What due diligence are you doing behind the scenes to ensure the aircraft your flying are current with their maintenance and inspections? If you’re just the contract pilot, I would assume those responsibilities fall on the owner operator, which means you really don’t have to worry about those things. (If I understand what you do correctly). Thanks for any insight here!

Would you be better off from a tax point of view to be a resident of Nevada rather than California. Since Nevada has no personal income tax. Base yourself out of Reno as well. Just an idea. Might be a good concept to research. Thanks

Feast or Famine. However what you didn't talk about is what is the longest you went without getting a paycheck. You have to take it when it's there because it can dry up in a weeks time. Just ask the guys who were doing it during the pandemic.
