We have been drinking water from Andalusian terracotta from at least 3500 years and so far nobody seems to have died from it, but there are people who would eat every high processed rubbish but has all sorts of sceptical comments about a logical solution like yours. I found(with your first video) and still find your invention absolutly great. Thank you so much for sharing it.
People will make negative comments constantly when you put yourself out there on the internet. Don't worry about them. I learned a lot from your video and I appreciate what you have done. Thank you my friend.
Greetings from Hawkes Bay. Loved your original video on the water filter, am planning on doing my own. Have to say though, you have WAAAAAY more patience than I do with people! It amazes me how incapable people are of thinking for themselves! Makes one wonder how we survived this far as a species. Cheers.
Can I ask where you got the pot having an issue finding one that is not glazed have brought a couple that looked unglazed but obviously are not as they appear waterproof?
Thank you for this follow up! I have a Berkey but need new filters. I think I'm going to use the Berkey container with a terracotta pot & wooden plug like your system. I live in a converted van so the pot will work better for traveling. You rock!!
This has sparked yet another project for me. It’s a wonderful idea and from my own quick google, the pot filtering is a well known method dating far back in human history. They even threw a silver coin in the pot to help kill bacteria. Don’t let the comments wind you up to much, it’s been a great video and I’m mostly just commenting to help the algorithm share this for you! Thanks!
Well done mate, just like Grandpa had. Remember that most of the dumb questions are from bots, brought to you by none other than corrupt RU-vid. A LOT of city folk can't handle the idea of collecting rain water even though city water is the 'worst'! Obviously in Australia a LOT of us have always collected rain water, the way of life! Love your water filter! Subscribed.
Folks It is a ceramic flower pot. Buy 5 at a time they are dirt cheap. When you decide to clean your filter - STOP! Throw it out and replace it with a new one. You can scrub that ceramic all day you are not getting rid of the trapped sediment. It is now inside the ceramic. Just replace it, I ran a Reverse Osmosis water system for a Regional Dialysis Center, this filter is not a new concept, I been using in Thailand for many years. Nice vid tho,,,,
I saw your first video and went out and got everything right away. I haven't put it together yet but was very happy to have an alternate way to filter water if I become unable to buy replacement filters.
You are awesome! my fave new channel...and I follow so many including canadian prepper like you mentioned last time... rain tank water is better than the townie crap, so wow that people just freak out about sky juice but let chemicals into their bodies without question ...chill out people! I love your kiwi ingenuity!
Congratulations for the many people (I'm one of them) who have taken an interest and also implementing your water filter creation. I love iit because it works and is so much cheaper than the $400.00 one I bought and have to buy filters for it every 6 months at a cost of $100.00 + now. I do still use a copper urn for drinking water. 😊
hey- that's really kind of you to come in here and say that. I hope that all is well with you? and that whatever happens over the coming months/ years that you keep a cool head and that you make all the right moves.
Some pots may be sprayed with a clear coat is where the sanding may be needed to remove it.. To help prime the pot. One might place the pot in a bucket or bin big enough to submerge it in hot water and allowed to soak like over night.
I repurposed one of my dark colored rainbarrels into a rain catchment barrel by moving it into the yard as opposed to keeping it where it caught runoff from the roof. I will be moving another barrel out into the yard as soon as I get it emptied..... I have gathered the materials to make several of the water filters. This is such a genius way to create a long lasting, very good water filter & catchment system! Thank you for sharing this!
I am a fellow Kiwi new to your channel. A couple of days ago I happened upon your water filtration video, immediately subscribed and this is only the second video I've seen. I am looking forward to making my way through your previous video catalog. All the best for the future.
Great addendum, I had a question about the terra cotta and you answered it. The rest of those concerns you either addressed originally or were not thought through prior to posting. Thanks for your patient response
In the tropics I came across 'drip stones' which were put on window ledges to produce cooled filtered water. Your terracotta filter made me wonder if you could do something similar? Perhaps use a clay chimney pot for the body? Probably only useful in the summer, but that's when cool drinking water is so refreshing anyway. More power to your elbow!
You’re freaking brilliant sir. People that can’t grasp what you were saying in your first video, well let’s just say, they’re “special”. 😂😂😂. Love ya, all the way across the pond, Cindy ❤
"Test the pottery. Consumers can buy lead-testing kits in hardware stores or online. The kits contain swabs with instructions on proper use of the swabs and reading of the results. In most cases, the consumer will rub the swab on the food-contacting surface of the pottery. In most kits, if the pottery contains lead that leaches onto the swab, it will change colors. If a consumer performs a test and finds the pottery contains leachable lead, the FDA strongly advises against using the pottery for cooking, serving, or storing food or drinks."
WOW!! What a great cheap efficient way to filter water! Strictly out of curiosity, I would love to see the test results from city water, versus your rain water; both having gone through your filter. Only because I wonder if the terracotta would maybe filter out some of the chemicals the water treatment plants add to it and how much it would remove? No matter either way though; this is GREAT! If your water source was poor to begin with, you could easily have a plastic tub on top with gravel sand and charcoal for the water to filter through first. This is a wonderful idea!!
I made a version of this filter as soon as I saw your video. I made it with a glass water dispenser and a flower pot made in Germany. Unfortunately, the pot was probably too small or the clay was too fine and the water had a hard time filtering through. I was averaging about a drop every few hours, lol. I even sanded the pot inside and out. I do highly recommend finding a natural cork to plug the bottom. Your terracotta might be more porous than mine, but it's also possible that the wooden plug is leaking and allowing more water to flow through. Craft stores sometimes have natural corks, but they might be mixed in with decorative corks made with glue. I went down a research hole after I found your video. Terracotta filters, such as the ones made by Potters Without Boarders, are made with a 50/50 mix of clay and sawdust. The sawdust burns away in the kiln, leaving tiny holes in the clay that allow water to pass through more easily. Plain terracotta flower pots do naturally have microscopic holes within them that allow water to pass, but the flow rate is abysmal without the sawdust step... Clays from different locations would obviously have different properties and grain sizes, however. I found another crafty man on youtube who made a filter with a much larger pot. His flowrate was a few gallons every 24 hours. Not great, but better than my set up. The larger pot, added weight of the water, and larger surface area helps to improve water flow. I'll try out a larger pot tomorrow and update this comment. I've also started looking for terracotta filter manufacturers who are willing to ship to the USA, but no luck so far. Honestly, it might be easier to take a pottery class! So besides finding a larger pot, I might also try Itallian terracotta or a clay olla pot.
so easy to check for leaks - just lift the pot and see how it drips- It should be 'sweating' evenly all over below the water line with no drips from the cork or bung.
@@joanobrien722 From my research, yes. It can take several hours for the pot to be primed with water. However, the clay may still not be pours enough to allow for an easy flow rate, as mine wasn't. I ended up turning my pot filter into a traditional charcoal filter. The base layer is natural iron sand from ebay, the middle is activated charcoal from the pet fish store, and the top layer is Zeolithe from the pet fish store. I plugged with hole with cotton as a filter and sprayed the rocks with colloidal silver. I washed every layer of sand/rock separately under running water. Water tasted like clay for the first few days, but now its very soft and clear.
You know what? You just gave me an idea of storing rainwater that I can filter later. Btw, I still have to check your other video on how to make water from air. Thank you.
I love what you did I think is a very well done . And when you where making it you explain everything about each item that you used. I think people those people were listening. I will be making one for my house this summer. Thanks for putting your time to make it and taking for answers the questions to those exegetical. I trust rain water more than I will trust city water where at least here in the states is water from the toilet and sink and all the waste that it gets treated with all kinds of quemical then there sell right back to us. Love the first video on making and love this one as well. Great job.
Thanks for this. The water in Wanganui is terrible, combined with the old pipes in my rental...😬 I am going to be trying this as I can't sustain buying drinking water any longer. Great Channel.
@@t.h.o.r. Yes - 6 Million views - fantastic! You so kindly share such amazingly valuable information - may you get many more millions of views. We get so powered from this such valuable information 🙏😄
Filtered rainwater will always be acidic, too acidic, what they call "aggressive". Aggressive water does a lot of things you don't want it to do. Get an aquarium ph kit. Test and then add phUP dropwise and retest until you are at 7-7.2. You will protect your health. It really is a step you shouldn't omit if you are drinking rainwater long-term.
Hi... so good to see a kiwi channel and someone facing kiwi prices and products! Where did you get an Italian terracotta pot? The affordable ones I am seeing online are from Aussie but say italian (whatever that means)
The same people who scream about eating off stoneware but they cook their food in stainless steel that has been recycled from Churnable. 🤣 You did a great job and hey even the bad comments count for the algorithm so keep them pacified and continue to share your wonderful stuff with us. You are appreciated and my Mother and I are planning on making this filter. Love your rain water catch barrel. Now I have another project to do.
I recently found your channel and find it incredibly enlightening and fun. I just wanted to say thank you for sharing your brilliance. Much love from the Midwest US. 💖
You can buy a clay disk with silver and place it over the hole in the bottom. If you pour slowly, the disk shouldn't budge the silver in the clay will help purify the water just needs to be replaced about every 6 month or so because it will get dirty from any contaminants that might be in your water😊👍❤️
Hallo! After having watched your first Video (?) oh this we went straight out and got what was needed! Quite proud of our version we could hardly keeps ourselves from constantly turning the tap to watch our first "selfmade" drinkingwater! 1 day later unfortunately still nothing but a fine coat of sweat around the terracotta pott. I wonder, if the clay hast something to do with it? So, now, thanks to the heavy-lead-problem I will be out again later to get hold of an italian make! Fingers crossed, that is the solution!?? After another 3 days I unfortunately must say, it wasn't. The Pott hast let through about 5 ml. As I am getting rather nervous on Not having our own emergency supply I have bought a Berky filter. How disappointing.
If you feel the need for a decent scourer you can simply make a paste from a few drops of water and some Bicarbonate of Soda. It to has anti microbial properties and is a great cleaning agent! If you do make one with a glass outer collection container watch out for light causing growth of nasties!
Hi, thankyou for this podcast, awesome design, I'm going to be following suit as my water filter is getting a bit costly, nothing else like the taste of fresh water, massive respect, J&HXx
Dear sir, I am from the Netherlands. The drinking water is polluted here. I love your video about making the waterfilter! I wonder wether the terracotta pots block the chemicals? I want to filter the drinking water. That is my question to you dear sir
Good video man there will always be people that have better ideas or just plain don't get it or just hate cuz they have nothing better to do. Stay frosty
Great system I'd be tempted to use it without the collodial silver, as I'd be more worried about turning blue than about catching anything from the filtered rain water.
Oh - STOP IT lol. search it on the net- you will only find photos of one man turned blue- cos he was an idiot who made it badly and drank litres of it daily for years. It diddnt kill him.
I said it before I'll say it again this is a brilliant channel you remind me of me on steroids in other words I'm very similar to you but you are a lot smarter I'm not putting myself down I have my genius moments but your channel is just like my head I'm always inventing things making things etc etc.... I have a Can-Do attitude and I seem to get presented with problems that nobody else ever seems to get so I've become very adept at problem solving with whatever I have at hand....God bless
Well my friend, hate to say it but the rain water is just as tainted. Chemtrail heaven. But what can we do? Exactly what your doing, the best we can do with what is given to us. Great video!
At the very least you have produced a great video. As far as whether or not this is a good method of filtering water, seems to me the ultimate test will be your own health over time. Considering that, may I ask how long you have been doing this? Have you sort of kept notes on your own health? So far have you seen any negative effects that might possibly be attributed to the water you are drinking? I may like to try this myself however I need to know for a fact this is a method of thoroughly purifying water before I have my family drinking this water.
I loved your first video as I said about the wood stick you put in it anti bacterial type absolutely brilliant thous criticizing your amazing home made Berkie was genius and in Canada know $500 and crazy higher saving is a must now adays and don’t let a few uneducated people about it bother you, pat your self on the back I say Bloody bravo!!!!
Hello...Thank you for your wonderful videos! I thought the first one was very thorough, however I do have a question that I can't seem to find the answer to. Once I make the silver spray, am I simply coating the inside of the terracotta pot by spraying it and should I reapply the spray every time after cleaning it? Thank you Kindly, Karla
Thank you so much. I'm retired & I can't afford those fancy water filters. Some questions, do I need to boil the rain water before drinking??? Is this system just for rain water?? What about water from other sources, like a pond or creek..
just a thought...you could potentially get one of those large clear plastic water bottles and cut the top off to the size of the pot...that way you can be sure that your plastic is safe AND the added benefit of repurposing that container...just a thought..
Great video! Subbed! 😊 May I ask, where you bought the terracotta pots? You mentioned they’re from Italy. I’ve searched and they’re all pretty pricey. I would really appreciate any recommendations.
Goes to show that no good deed goes unpunished. Share something and 99 out of 100 people are just here to complain. Yours is the first video I saw with the planter for a filter. I was hand to forehead “why didn’t I think of that?”
There is a difference between complaining and pointing out various issues based on critical thinking and holistic logic . For example, terracotta primarily just filters relatively larger particulates, but doesn't do very well for dissolved chemicals whether in their solid form or in ion form. Most commercial filters have a combination of various materials (often a combo of activated carbon and ion exchange materials) to effectively filter water. Terracotta is known to have mold build up issue (the more humid the climate, the worse it will be. Not so much a problem in the desert or the like). The colloidal silver will help with that some, but not completely. More effective would be to periodically put boiling hot water in there and also scrubs (and/or soaks) with washing soda or the like (washing soda is far more alkaline than baking soda and thus is more antimicrobial in nature). The whole entire process of science is putting hypothesis and ideas to the test and finding all the problems/faults with it. For me, it is not personal--its about coming to a greater and better objective truth. It's not about "venting one's spleen" or fault finding because I'm unhappy with myself and own life or the like.
Hello from Tampa Florida. Wow. I absolutely adore your personality and content. Its right up my alley. I've been wanting one of these gravity water filters but goodness they are expensive. Holy cow did you just make it super possible for me to have my own. I will be looking for a Italian Made Ceramic Terracota Pot and Holder for this. I can't believe just how afforadable you made this for everyone who views your channel. I would love to know what this filters out. Does this clear out chlorine, flouride, metals? I'm so curious. I see some of these filters you can buy that are 99.99% clear of everything. They really do seem great. Is this as good? Seems like it takes the same amount of time to filter through and its a longer process then the store bought Brita filters and such.
FIRSTLY AVOID COLLECTING RAIN WATER IN A WATER BUTT... I'VE SEEN A SQUADRON OF MOSQUITOES FLY OUT OF THOSE. I IMMEDIATELY WARNED MY DAD IT NEEDED DRAINING AND CLEANING... HE WAS HORRIFIED LOL THE GUY COLLECTS RAINWATER... SO WHATEVER IS IN THAT IS IN THE RAINWATER... CHEMTRAILS LOL PARTICULATES.. ALL VARIETIES 😄 I SAW SOMETHING ADVERTISED RECENTLY THAT WAS IF I REMEMBER RIGHTLY A 4 STAGE FILTRATION SYSTEM... LIKE BRITA BUT BETTER. THE PROBLEM BEING WOULD BE REPLACEMENT FILTERS. PEOPLE ARE INTERESTED ON HERE IF THE SKY FALLS ETC... SO FILTERS MIGHT BE IN SHORT SUPPLY. I DON'T KNOW... I NEVER FOLLOWED IT UP. PS I WRITE IN CAPS FOR SEVERAL REASONS... I'M NOT SHOUTING 🙂
Hello from Brooksville. I'm also going to make one. But one commenter said they found terra cotta pots from Lowe's that are made in Italy but they hardly drain at all. So maybe if we just soak it in water over night to 'prime' it, it will work. If you've made this by now, please let me know, as I'll be looking for resources here in our area.
I shared your video everywhere because its the most simple. except for that damn hole in the bottom!!! I used cork and it tastes terrible! so you used wood. makes better sense. I thought you used a closed bottom pot. I forgot that detail!! I used one of those playschool upright drinking coolers instead of a trashcan that has a spout already built in!! I also intend to use a sun tea jar. It all works! I love your mind! "Can you clean it?" "Well, YEAH!! thats the whole idea!"
Thanks for sharing. Does the terracotta pot act as a filter ? I’ve seen others that have extra filters in them. Just new at this and trying to figure it out.
Both great videos. Thank you. Question though.... I am not sure what colloidal silver to use as far as concentration is concerned. The link in the last video didn’t bring up a specific strength of silver. Could you please explain what concentration is best and do you just spray it or soak it on the inside and outside. Thank you.
...what a great idea!!....so i got everything on your list...i am very happy to be prepared and im sharing this simple ingenious filtering method with everyone i know... ...and i bought some seeds and garden tools so i can be totally prepared to grow my own food while my emerg fd supply lasts 6 mos....have your followers heard what adapt 2030 says about this yrs crop report and why getting fully prepared before sept 15th might be the time that grocery stores start needing police due to food rioting and flash mob stealing all the food?....ive told everyone i can about it...MAY GOD BE WITH US! May the Universe let its abundance flow!
Way less waffle than I hear and see in the average American offerings. I like it. Why not do a basic solar system, water or photovoltaic. I think I'd be able to watch one of your videos to the end, unlike so many others. 😂
haha - thanks Paul- I do try to be practical.
