I made a Great Choice ACCEPTING this NIGHTMARE of a Job!

Sometimes after starting a job, I really question my sanity. This one is one of those jobs. I was speaking with the local postman a few jobs ago, and he recommended this yard and said it was well out of control and overgrown. Let me tell you, he wasn't wrong. Initially, when I went around to have a look, I passed on this job, and it went into the “too hard” basket! After a couple of more drives past, I decided to give it a try. I soon realise that I had made a terrible mistake. It was an absolute nightmare to complete. As you can see, it has years of growth over it - trees, blackberries, wood, rubbish, some type of vine, off cuts, a real disaster! I spoke to the neighbour, and he said that he had been there for 6 years and this section hadn't really been touched in any significant way. I thought that I could get it done in an episode, but Easter and the weather had something to say about that, so it will be completed in 2 parts. All up, this job took me around 8 hours to complete, including 3 trips to the landfill (close to a ton). This is part 1 of 11.

FAQ's:
Q: Where are you located?
A: I am from Hobart, Tasmania, Australia 🦘.
Q: Do you worry about snakes?
A: I have never even seen a snake in over 5 years on the job.
Q: Which equipment do you use?
A: Mostly STIHL power equipment (battery and petrol) and commercial Honda self-propelled mowers.
Q: How much do the jobs cost?
A: Sorry, I prefer not to talk about costs.
Q: Why don't you use tarps instead of bins?
A: Tarps are too difficult to move through small spaces and lift into the trailer. The same for wheelbarrows, they are only good for unloading the trailer!
Q: Why are the hot water cylinders outside?
A: I would say it's because Australia had a temperate to tropical climate, and therefore it doesn't matter that much if they are outdoors. To me, though, it seems a bit inefficient to have them outside in Tasmania with a temperate climate (coldish for 3 - 4 months per year). But that is industry standard down here 🤷‍♂️.
Q: Why don't you have help?
A: I've had many problems with employees in the past, so now I work alone.
Q: Why don't you have a ride-on mower?
A: Well, there are a few reasons.
1. I don't have the right trailer for a ride on, considering I always take away the green waste.
2. I don't have anywhere to store it, as my shed is too small.
3. A lot of the properties we do have fences and gates, so you can't actually get a ride-on on to the properties.
4. I don't do enough big jobs to justify spending 15k AUD on a stander, but it would be nice to have one!
5. I will get one as soon as my transport and storage problems are solved.
Q: What types of ladders do you use?
A: The large one is a Gorilla Adjustable Platform 150kg and the small one is a Gorilla Mighty 19. They are both adjustable.
Q: Who/what is Jim's Mowing?
A: Jim's Mowing is a franchise business. The Jim's Group is the biggest home services franchise in Australia.
Q: Why do you have 2 channels that seem the same?
A: Quick Cuts (my original channel) has music in the background. Quick Cuts V2 is for those that like just machine noise, and it doesn't have music.

That’s a great idea! They would certainly clear things out, but I wonder if they would eat the blackberry bushes. 🤔 They do have wicked thorns. Apparently they love blackberry bushes: from Google - Goats are well equipped for eating brush and especially enjoy blackberries. Their prehensile tongues are well suited for eating shrubs, spines, and leaves, making them well adapted for eating thorny blackberry canes.

@@patkcalifornia8301 Me too! I would give 100 thumbs up for this comment. One of the most heart-breaking things I have seen over the years is watching the avid gardeners, my grandparents, get to an age where they couldn't do it anymore. I knew that affected them so it was wonderful to see my wider family all pitch in and when they got to the 90's, all they had to do was potter and enjoy their garden. Not everyone has that. As more people are encouraged to stay in their home as they age, making sure their properties are well cared for, isn't catered for. So they rely on people with good hearts, giving them a hand. Sometimes there just isn't anyone like that around. I am very pleased George does it and do my best to support him to keep doing it. If I had money I would pay him to.

Sometimes people become disabled or get older and are no longer able to keep up with what needs doing around the home. It can cost a lot of money to get someone in to do the work after it has gotten away on you. That's why George is such a blessing. I know so many older people who end up living in a couple of rooms of a large home and are unable to keep up with their properties. Families don't help and they become very isolated. While the state will help people to stay in their own homes as they get older, the state won't pay for the up keep of the property. They expect families will help. These days they don't. Some people live alone, they don’t have family or too embarrassed to ask for help or they don’t have the money to hire a gardener to clean up. Some people are dealing with depression or mental health and can also be overwhelming. There’s always a reason for everything. Unfortunately, this video and many other videos similar to this one, people ask too many questions, “Why”?”, “How come this happened”?… But they aren’t here to answer. And people judge and criticize a total stranger. Sometimes I’ve seen very cruel comments against a person whose yard and homes look like a disaster. Who wants to be judged and criticized? 🤷🏻‍♀️

I wholeheartedly agree with your evaluation that this task is a monumental endeavor. It’s evident that you could judiciously extend the timeline and accomplish it in several stages. The progress you’ve made so far is truly impressive. The pathway to the garage is now visible, and perhaps even an entryway to the house. I hold great admiration for your dedication in assisting this homeowner. I’m thrilled to anticipate the outcome, as I’m confident it will be nothing short of spectacular!

Can I suggest that if your postman finds you any more jobs like this one, that he volunteer to help? As much as I love watching these videos I am conscious that you have to get up and go to work the next day, so I will not be pushing you to take on the back yard. You are a godsend for the people you help, but your kindness should not be abused.

That's what I was thinking all the time - I wonder if George gets knackered like the rest of us? Of course he does! But I'm assuming there's a good deal of 'pushing through it' - with consequences I would think for the next day? Hopefully not too bad.

Oh, my George! You seem to find the most unusual jobs to do! I kept saying surely that driveway has a huge incline and then you noted on screen that it keeps getting thicker. I just went 🤦‍♀️. I just can’t understand how people allow their homes to get like this. I would be living in panic attack 😳, getting claustrophobic! You did an amazing job in Part 1, can’t wait to see Part 2. It doesn’t matter what you take on to do, you hang in there and do the job as if you were doing your own property. When you said you wouldn’t touch the backyard, I thought it must be horrendous. You impress me so much with your work ethics as well as the job you do. You are the best lawn makeover on RU-vid, hands down!! See you on the next one! 💚 from Texas

And it's always breathtaking to see what power nature has and how it can make disappear the work of human in the course of years under thick layers of weed and plants. I just wonder where the person who's living there entered the property? Very curious on part 2 of that! Greetings of a sunny Vienna (Austria).
