This guy’s biggest nightmare isn’t a recession. That would slow, but not stop his business. But he is running a sole proprietorship in a physically demanding industry. If he gets sick or injured, his income goes to zero on any day he can’t work.

I've met guys like this when I lived in GA. They get unbelievable opportunities, but don't keep track of what their actual business expenses are. Some of them got hurt and couldn't work any more. Some of them got in so much debt they lost everything. They spend every dime, have no emergency savings, no retirement investments, and they will not take any advice. The first problem was paying off his business equipment (which can be used as depreciation and interest write off). If he had an accountant, he would be "making" $100k per year (or even less), but have much more discretionary income- because less of it would be going to Fed/State taxes. People have a hard time understanding how this is possible- but if he is going to claim $400k on his personal taxes as income, he is going to be paying through the nose in Fed/State taxes (probably close to $200k by the time he includes payroll taxes). He would be much better off paying himself a reasonable salary (say $100k), and paying a total of $35k in taxes- leaving himself an extra $165k for "business expenses"- home office, truck, cell phones, internet, disposable products, paper, printer, computer, cleaning supplies, IRA match, health insurance, etc. Then use the remaining $100k for equipment repairs/upgrades or pay a distribution to himself as needed and get that mortgage out of his way. Of course if he does all of this, he won't be able to brag about making "$400,000 per year". But his wallet would be a lot heavier and he would have more than $60k in his bank account.

🤨 Comments are little disappointing. Making this much money is commendable, don’t be so negative. Daves callers mostly call in because they need help “MANAGING MONEY,” its not always about “MAKING MONEY.” He makes 400k but only have 60k saved. He didn’t call to boast he called because he clearly sees he is doing something wrong, let him ask for help.

@@chuckytherapper actually he's doing terrible. He thinks he's rich and he's going to end up severely in the red if he doesn't start keeping way better track of expenses. He thinks he has way more money to spend frivolously than he actually does. This is very obvious when he says "all I have for expense is gas". Anyone that's ever owned or managed a business knows this is impossible. I would bet about 70% of that $400k is going towards (or should be going towards) expenses. Sounds like he just pockets the money and spends it on fancy dinners instead. This will all blow up in his face before too long.

I have a couple of "rules" for finance- always expect the unexpected, and on a related note, don't assume that the income you're making today will be the same or more in the future. Also, Dave's comment about setting 20 million dollars as a goal seems pretty over the top. I think he could still do very well with a lot less than that.

Redneck Rich lol Yeah I used to live in Fargo North Dakota and concrete work was constant. The city is expanding so that's the reason. This type of work takes a long time and costs a lot of money its usually paid for by companies, businesses or the city. Less often by single home families or individuals. In Fargo there was constant big projects I've done apartments, neighborhoods, and city parks. They all need basements, sidewalks, driveways, streets and foundations. The construction companies get paid the day they actually pour the concrete so everything until that day is just setting up where the concrete will be permanently like playing with giant Legos.
