I was thinking it would be a wonderful challenge to see how Steve Marsh handled the trip and dining in the restaurant. This was a great fun video. Thanks.
So unfair to hotel staff when he uses that torch, I think he must assume they all have the time to deep clean the rooms between each guest. You would find dirt anywhere with one of those things. Also it makes him look like a bit of a plonker when he gets it out, I don't think he realises
I bet that's what they do anyway. Also if he shined his torch on the table and restaurant fixtures and fittings not to mention the plates cutlery and glass before his romantic meal for one I think he would get the same results @@daniel69
He should shine his torch on the restaurant too but I don't think he is brave enough as the staff would see him. Would probably be much filthier too. Sorry if this is a repeat post. I'm expecting that they probably deep clean the rooms at least once a week to be honest .
Regarding the age of the 'Vagon Restaurant', you actually showed us at 16m 15s a makers' plate which clearly said 1924; (from a factory in Gyor). 1924 seems about right for that type of carriage. i suspect that the bogies were replaced in 1980!
Thankyou Scott for yet another helpful and informative vlog. When I was traveling with my job, I always had a little portable clothes steam cleaner with me to get out the wrinkles in my shirts. I just filled it up with the tap water and plugged it in. I hung the shirts up on the shower curtain and steamed them up in the evening.😊.
Loved the video, Scott. The food looked good in the restaurant, and the chimney cake looked huge. The UV light always uncovers the dirty crime scene. Great video, I'm looking forward to the next one.
Nice again@! I love your video's. That restaurant on wheels is a wagon from 1924. You can see it in the video at 16:16. You walked into the restaurant but just missed it.
Hi Scott, you should visit the Glennlo Abbey Hotel in Galway city. They have a pullman coach from the Orient express as a restaurant set in the Hotel grounds.
Two carriages (used in original film)from the orient express. A lot less mileage too. ( but probably twice as dear). Loved the video even if the sound was poor at times.
Great trip - may do it myself one day. Nice to see you having a proper meal for once! Glad you enjoyed! And good old Ryanair - people moan about them but in the last month I went so Seville £45 return and Limoges £55 return. Cant go wrong IMO. And Scott, thanks for all your videos. Having been widowed and on my own for the past 3 years, I have now started travelling - thanks to YOU.
Ryanair have started flying from Bristol for the summer; and with a return trip to CPH for less than the price of a return train ticket to London, I think that's worth a punt.
I used to do things like that when I still lived in Germany. Like we drove from West-Berlin to Helmstedt ( the first city in West-Germany after crossing the GDR) had half a chicken and drove back or when I lived in Krefeld we quite often drove after the pubs closed to Amsterdam, had a coffee at the Centraal Station and back home again. Well, I was young then.
Another enjoyable video, thank you. I would enjoy your videos even more if you could improve the audio on your muffled pieces to camera, perhaps a separate mic.?
Hi David, yes I was aware of the poor audio towards the end of the video. My GoPro has a multi-directional microphone, and if I forget to change the direction, it can pick up my voice, but only secondry to background noise.
Excellent video Scott. I am planning a return visit to Budapest later this year then on to Vienna by train. Lovely meeting you in person today and I think you were right 'there is no such thing as a quick visit to Ikea' All the best for your next adventure.
It's why we pack antibacterial wipes and flip-flops. I've been through Keleti in 2000. It was the weekend of the Grand Prxi it was hard to find anywhere to stay. Ended up stating in a student tower block on the East side of the city. I became unwell so didn't get to enjoy the city too much, I did do an architectural walking tour. Finally a photo of Jasper, I hope he gets you more subscribers.
Did the "lady" of the metro said "Goodbye" when you got of at Deli? I remember it so good from my trips. That Vagon restaurant is amazing, for the looks and for the food. Will eat there again on my next visit to Budapest. (Eat also at Lakomativ Ekkerem, next to Keleti Station (You will find it, it has a locomotive sign above the door)) You can spot coaches from 12 different countries at Keleti, including Ukrain.
Thanks for the tour of Budapest ..wow its like going to the centre of the earth to get to the metro bit freaky for me and glad the meal was a cracking good one 👍 but looks a loverly city great video 📹
Well that was brilliant and uncanny Scott. We were in Budapest last week and made a pilgrimage to Vagon after our first experience of the place in 2018. We went for my birthday on Wednesday but they were full (Valentine’s Day) so booked for Thursday and weren’t disappointed at all. Such a unique restaurant with high quality food. Just seeing you walking around the city made me feel I was still there. Also we stayed at the Atrium Fashion hotel which is at the other end of that back lane that the Novotel is on. A nice little hotel with a decent continental breakfast. Fortunately the air con was perfect in the room as it was similarly warm when we walked in. I thoroughly recommend a week in Budapest as there is so much to do. We crammed in quite a lot in the 4 days we were there (flights from/to Leeds/Bradford are a bit on the late side sadly so Monday was a late arrival but Friday’s 1915 flight meant we got half a day in at least).
I've twice visited Budapest and loved it. Next time you go be sure to spend a day at one of the spas. If you forget to pack your swimming cozzy and flip-flops , I think you can just turn up and hire these and towels. I recommend staying Monday to Friday tho' the famous 'ruin' bars can still get busy in the tourist season. The noisy night clubs are confined to a small area, so it should be easy to evade the stag and hen parties and find quieter bars selling craft beer. The must-buy souvenir for you, Scott (and Steve Marsh) is the t-shirt commemorating Hungary's 6-3 thrashing of England at Wembley Stadium in 1953.
Excellent video as always Scott. Plus, I learnt something new Tonight...I never knew Costa were owned by Coca-Cola. Coca-Cola must love my Hometown as they're literally popping up everywhere and anywhere!
This looked well worth the journey. Love the ultra violet check of your room but sometimes you just don’t want to know. Lol. Don’t shine that light too much on the soft furnishings or carpet. 😅
I seem to remember the escalators down to the metro at Keleti Pu were incredibly fast - you had to be quite careful getting on them. Great vlog and nice to see Budapest again. Many thanks.👍
I used to travel to Budapest for work and in the city centre you will find a Captain Nemo themed restaurant. Also try the Danubius Gallert hotel, with its underground pools and spars. Stunning place.
gellerts been closed for about 3 years now. under renovation having changed operator. the pools care still open because despite being attached to the hotel they are apparently owned by the city.
Great content as normal love watching your travels , I was doing some research on travelling to islay from york and it takes a very long time unless you fly from Glasgow. With more research i found that you can take a direct bus from Glasgow to the ferry port and then take the ferry to islay ,according to many travel sites it is the most scenic bus journey in Europe so would make an excellent travel video for you to make .( Be warned its a six hour bus ride and over two hours on the ferry ) that heen said i think it will make an excellent video maybe in two parts
So 'É' with an accent is like an english E (ae) in Eight, it's a complicated language because of a zillion clauses etc, but consistently phonetic in pronounciation. Grerat to see our old home town. miss the chimmney cake, Keleti is the Eastern Terminal, where I can just remember arriving as a 5 year old in the 1967 for the first time with my parents, my wife comes from just around the corner from Keleti. Yes you gotta go back, so many great places to yet see and experience and some real big historic connections with Scotland.
The best part of Novotel Centrum Budapest in my opinion is the ornate art deco restaurant which is exquisite in the evening with the the echo of the music from the piano but sadly closed during the winter months.
Scott here's a wee Summer challenge for you.. Through the Scottish lowlands, across the rolling Cheviot Hills into Newcastle. Then up into Coastal Northumberland. & its all in 1 day, by train 🚆 😊 Depart GCL 14.34 Arrive Carlisle 15.45 Dept CAR 16.22 Arrive Chathill 18.55 Det Chathill 19.15 Arrive CAR 21.56 Dept CAR 22.03 or 22.54 Arrive GLC 23.17 or 00.08 I think The longest day, June 21st would be a great day to do this 😊☀️🚄🚈
Stayed a few years back in an apartment with views over the Danu e and Parliament building. Explored both sides of the river using the great and cheap public transport. I used their night-time public boat service( included in day pass) to go up and down the river, no need to pay for a river cruise.Like yourself I may have endulged in a couple of chimney cakes. They really vary in price depending upon where you buy from. Definitely plenty to see amd do 😊
It is pronunced Deh- (the e beng short)-ak-Ferents-Tair). Excited to see you travel to my fave city in Europe. The Metró station is actually on the left, behind the white church ;-) Maybe get a day pass if you plan to max out Public transport, it is about 1650 Forints, that should be about €5.30, but you can use it for bus, Tram, Trolleybus and Metró. It is very easy to get around the city on public transport, the city is very well connected and cross connections are good aswell. If you fancy coffee and some good cake next time I recommend Jég Büfe at Ferenciek Tere. That's just one stop from Deák Ferenc Tér on the No3 Metro, alternatively you can easily walk there too overground. And there may be a small ABC shop open at Arány Janos utca (one stop on the No. 3 Metrá in the other direction. I think I have gone in there on a sunday before. And the No 2 Metró is built so deep because it has to cross under the Danube. It has not been built before the war. The only line that existed before the war is the historical No. 1 line which opened in 1896, the other ones were built around the 70's. Oh and the stadium is pronunces Push-kaaash Ferents. He was a famous Hungarian Footballer who scored big in the 1954 World cup in Bern. However I thought the longest trams in Budapest were on the line 4/6
I was in Budapest with my son in February and we stayed at the Ibis Styles. I wonder if we were there at the same time than you… It was nice seeing you walk the streets that we walked. Great video.
The old Malév aircraft you could see as you arrived at the airport are at the Aeropark. I was lucky enough to visit it by chance last August while they had a huge event going on, it really is worth a visit. You can have much interaction with everything aviation related. Even control a de-icing vehicles spray nozzle .
For the problem of "no iron", I would ask at the concierge. Some hotel like Premium Inn at Cardiff Central don't have iron and ironing table at rooms, but in a storage room at ground floor. While some others have iron with foldable ironing table at the corridor. Definitely should ask for it if needed.
If you ever visit the Hague, the city centre Novotel is nice. I ended up there for free after a high school reunion. The hague, because Novotel Schiedam overbooked because of a 🤐 bird exhibition. First they didn't want to do anything... I was having dinner with classmates then . One of them is a manager at a world known hotel chain. He took over the phone conversation. That changed their attitude after a few minutes. I learned a few things for the next time I book a hotel. 😊
Scott you've made me want to go there too. It looks amazing. I'm not a lover of goulash but the pastries will do for me. As an aside, I absolutely loved the upbeat music you used. Any chance you can tell me what it is?
I was expecting it to look a bit like Vienna, which it does, for obvious historical reasons (both were joint capitals of the Austria-Hungary Monarchy until 1919) but a couple of other similarities surprised me: the Julius Meinl cup and saucer, and coffee machine in your hotel - Julius Meinl is a coffee company and chain of upmarket supermarkets in Austria; and seeing the word ''Ausgang'' on a metro exit, I wonder if this is just to continue the historical usage of Germany all over the Monarchy. Anyway very interesting and I think I would like Budapest.
Always let the espresso machine run itself without the coffee pod one time, just let the hot water rinse out onto an empty cup. 2 reasons, firstly the machine gets rid of any stagnant water in the boiler and secondly it keeps the cup hot for use.
Another enjoyable video, Scot thank you. Still a note : your comment in the 2nd part of the video was difficult to understand. An external bluetooth microphone that you can attach to the jacket would be recommended.
Scott, you should have taken your missus there for a romantic dinner. It looks amazing. I didn't realise that this city is where you find the bronze discarded shoes memorial, thank you for taking us along.
I think I would enjoy it if someone brings me a chimney cake as a gift from Budapest. 🤎 The goulash was excellent; I don't doubt that, but that's hard to carry in an airplane. 🥘🥘
Get rid of the UV light. Why torment yourself knowing what's there in the room. Ignore is bliss in this case. Loved the ambience of the train restaurant. Take care and safe travels home.
Scott that place with the planes is a Aviation museum its about 10 to 15 mins walk from the terminal and its around 5 quid i was there last year and place is well worth a trip you see the russian DC 3 There regards Peter
Can you please show more detail on how you buy tram/train tickets...and..prices of coffees/ green tea mokka...people like me would like to know these this...and...more in depth details please...so more information please 🙏
Planes, Trains, Everything Merchandise! UV Light with PTE on the side? If they're dirt cheap on ebay Scott why not make a small profit on an affiliate link.
You are not the only crazy one Scott. Iv'e been known to head abroad for the odd meal 🙃. To be honest coming from Dublin it might sometimes be cheaper to do so 🤣
I loved watching this video. However I will never by a UV pen. I always take disinfectant wipes wherever I go but don’t carry a mop and pail. I couldn’t cope with knowing how grotty the room was. I have wanted to go to Budapest for a while and will be going to that beautiful restaurant
I like the look of the restaurant. It's a shame it wasn't open for breakfast as well. I like restaurants that have that kind of atmosphere. Lamps and a bit faded but in a nice way (I particularly like those old slightly jaded Chinese restaurants where you're not even quite sure from the outside whether they're still open or not and you're a bit scared to try the door and see inside 🥢) It was well worth travelling all that way for anyway. A unique experience and happy lifelong memory😊
The chain bridge in Budapest was designed by English engineer William Tierney Clark and built by Scottish engineer Adam Clark, it was the first permanent bridge across the Danube opened in 1849. They also built a smaller version over the Thames in Marlow the next town along the river from us. That chicken looked fantastic, a novel restaurant. I wonder how many goons try sliding down the central escalator division at the metro stations ? No ball breaker obstructions unlike the London Tube 😉
