What a fantastic character. The preening was priceless, add the lisp, it beckons tears to stream down the cheeks and then the one thing needed to have you off the sofa and rolling on the floor...the leap over the ropes into the stage. To top all that off some exciting, classy boxing. He seems like a nice man and a romantic with some soft edges that he's not afraid to show. All in all a pretty class act...I knew someone who was much like him -it's a small world in so many ways, isn't it?
This rivalry is up there with Ali&Joe Frazier..not on a global scale, but for pure drama and entertainment value..and like Ali&Frazier they were two really good fighters who gave it all..and they made up in later life which is good
I love watching this interview, In some ways it makes me sad that these fantastic athletes are gone and as far as i'm concerned have not been replaced, in the u.k anyway. True characters, True warriors.
And if anyone is thinking what is that, that Benn has got in his hand @ 7:40 it's a teenage mutant ninja turtle... Benn said Eubank looked like one 😂😂😂
The comment by Benn's promoter about Eubank pretending to be born with the 'silver spoon' was rather ignorant. Mr Eubank chose a character in a brutal sport to bring finesse and some form of uniqueness. To anyone who chooses to better themselves through their own way of education, be it speaking or reciting, shows character.
sort of class war was going on between the two back then that later shows in eubanks sense of image with one eye glass and his dress sense and Carrie's it to the ring. Personality clashes. Miss those days.
They are actually wonderful together in this. Neither of them goes over top unlike some where it just gets embarrassing. But they come over well matched in the interview, neither of them seeming to come out on top, yet both having their moments. And they would actually make a great double act. They were both very different in the ring, their styles. And yet both their fights were magnificent in quality.
Used to see Chris train as an amateur in King Alfred leisure centre and he always had his strut. Legend of a fighter and character! Brilliant 2 fights these 2 gave us. Total respect to both despite the hate.
Beautiful: Road sweepers, parliamentary procedure, DIY posters, the business, Nick Owen. Anyone posted any footage of the first Eubank vs. Benn fight? The rematch was total crap.
you are right , there has been no boxers with the same charisma , i remember watching all this at the time and the hype and build up was something that just isnt there anymore
Why can't we have more of this? A couple world class fighters trash talking, hyping up a fight then signing on the dotted line in front of the world. This is how you build up a championship bout!
they should do these face offs all the time, this was brilliant, funny as well. 'Lets have some parliamentary procedure here' haha. benns gritting his teeth the whole time, you can see he wants to just smack him, lol.
Kaabbaaq.....you are right, and it was always cool to see two legendary American fighters going at it like Tyson, holyfield, lewis etc and our fighters were never quite good enough. But being such a large country you have more % of people to choose from and boxing at that level was big money in the us unlike the UK where its sort of looked down upon (until they win) and the backing isn't there, so they are normally blokes training part time and working a job.
Nigel was an animal but Chris was a controlled animal as witnessed in their first match and his battle with Watson. Hell he even went up to Cruiserweight and almost did the business there. There needs to be more rivalries like these that's what made boxing so popular back then
I know I have this clip on tape somewhere, but do you know if it was the same night that Oldham knocked out Arsenal or beat Scarborough 7-0? just incase you know...
This is the difference between American and British fighters, if these guys were American we would get a scuffle and possibly a fight here, but thanks to their English manners everything went peaceful. I applaud you gentlemen!
Brilliant. You just don't get feuds like this, I hate all this mutual respect between fighters. Your going to war, slate each other with words as it builds it up. Yes one of em will look stupid when they lose but boxing is an ENTERTAINMENT business. ENTERTAIN US with all the trash talk. I love it !!!
@gunner4lyfe , just part of his unusual persona, really. He was such an interesting character, loved the media attention, and knew how to get the headlines. Could really fight when he wanted to, as well.
See 7:38 - What/who is that "star wars figure" Nigel's holding??!! Sorry if this has been answered already, can't be bothered to look through all the comments!
Now THIS is the big difference I am talking about. You could NEVER see this on American tv, two fighters sitting NEXT to eachother and trading insults without any of them flying into rage and attacking the other. That is the big difference between black Britons and black Americans!
They really were the '90s, English version of Hearns and Leonard. I guess I'm not the first to make that comparison? Nigel even grew his hair longer after this like Tommy.
LOL The super sky mega matchups with all the cash to hype things up could only dream of creating such an promotional gem. Thats the best bit of pre fight marketing you wil see. Rather than expecting a scuffle i though benn was in danger of cracking up laughting at one point
I would've loved to see a prime Roy Jones against a prime Nigel Benn, I think Benn was definitely the harder puncher, but Jones was very fast, would've been a great fight!
Ye they were the British version for sure.. Eubanks analysis of himself n why he would beat Benn was pretty much spot on! These guys were great to watch thru'out there careers and when u watch this again, the hype over Haye n Macca dont come close. Ya wouldnt see Haye in Jodpurs and monacle hahahahahaha.......oh..and cane!
Only in boxing could a man look into the camera and say to another man 'on the night you are mine, you belong to me' without there being any assertions to anything other than fisticuffs.
You said he never fought in America (he started his pro career there, which was very unusual for an Englishman). BTW, I take your point that most of the best boxers are in America but both Eubank and Benn were amazing fighters. In their era, the sport wasn't as global as it is today, at least for English fighters, so a lot of them didn't travel. There was a big boxing scene in Britain then (as there is today).
@3steps2u thats what i'm talking about. in the US, there could be so many great fights but the fighters won't fight each other. amir khan would love nothing more than to fight bradley but bradley won't fight. the same thing with mayweather and pacman. it's a shame.
