I picked the wrong major in college. After graduating with that wrong degree, I began to wonder if I was stuck with the career I had in education. Everything to do with picking a college major can be a lot of pressure, and pursuing something we invested so much time into doesn't make things easier.
In this vlog, I talk about how I'm trying to navigate a new career path despite not having a degree in that space.

im 3 years out of college still trying to find a job. Wanted to change my major but the thought of paying more money and starting over sucked. Graduated with a degree I didn't care for and now I feel stuck. life sucks.

Ever since I was 9 years old, I knew I wanted to be a writer for a magazine or a blog. But in my senior year of high school, I was torn between majoring in Communication or Education - which I thought was more practical and noble. Eventually I chose the latter even if deep down, my heart was in the arts & media. So I shifted and changed my major to Communication after a semester. After graduation, I was a freelance content & SEO writer for a white hat link building agency. And I LOVED it. But after 3 years I felt stagnant. I tried working for the corporate world but I hated it even tho I was earning more, so I went back to freelance writing. Now, I don't know what the fuck should I do next because I hate writing. Should I teach English abroad? Start a business? Work at a bank? Life is so complicated 😭😅

High school and society doesn’t prepare students for the financial loan repercussions of post university which is why some get into it come out with so much debt after university . The system needs to change .

Thanks for your video. I'm now in very desperate situation, I picked the wrong major. Sometimes, I blamed my campus, but sometimes my parent but in the end of the day, I blamed myself. It's so tiring and heavy, so I went to pschyriatrist and she diagnosed me with major depression with psychotic. I cried a lot, every night. Can't sleep every day but also I get so heavy to wake up from my sleep. I don't know what should I do right now

Hi there! It sounds like you're going through a lot. I believe it was a commendable thing for you to reach out for help when you did. It's completely understandable to feel pressure after investing so much time and effort into a degree. Everyone's situation is unique and so, I don't want to pretend like I know exactly what you should do. It's been a year since this video came out and since then, I was fortunate to find work completely out of the education field. There are some things that helped me get to where I am now. I advise you to consider please these suggestions with caution to suit your current situation because I was still financially dependent on my parents at the time I changed careers and not everyone is in those same conditions. With that said, I hope one or some of these suggestions offer you peace of mind: 1. Mental health is a difficult subject. I sincerely wish you the best as you recover and find peace. Even before I suggest anything about pivoting to a new field--I believe that taking care of yourself is priority #1--so pat yourself on the back for getting help! Like I said, please continue to seek as you need it. The world is much better with you in it! 2. Since this video came out, many more experienced working professionals have told me that they're working in fields that are unrelated to their major in college. So, for them the major they chose was not their final destination--it's likely that yours doesn't have to be either! 3. Navigating the career change was much easier when I had some ideas about what kind of career I wanted to have outside of my major. I think taking some time reflect about the sort of work you want to do, or at least what kind of work you're interested in will help guide you to where you want to go from here. 4. While you may have selected the wrong major, it's possible that what you studied is related to work you might find fulfilling elsewhere. Even if it's not directly, some skills you learned in your current degree can transfer, this can be a start. 5. Whether #4 is true for you or not, pivoting careers is a game where research, open-mindedness, and persaverance will serve you well. RU-vid, online job boards, and freelance work opportunities were all valuable resources for me as I developed skills. On the road you will be met with many 'No's'--but you only need one 'Yes' to launch you in a new direction. I hope this was helpful. Best of luck to you

i was told to do chemistry by my dad and was too scared to stand up for myself. i dragged my feet for 8 years trying to finish a 4 year degree… my 2013-204 year i suffered a terrible injury breaking my arm and shoulder and still suffer from chronic pain from it. my performance in school went way down hill as a result… since that year i had another year 2015-2016 where i got a lot of credits done going full time for both semesters. then 2017-2018 i went to another school at my fathers behest to get a teaching degree.. i ended up driving 5 hours to that school moving by myself and at orientation they told me i didnt qualify for the teaching program there. i went full time for that year and havent even had the interest to check my grades at all going to that school… i finished in 2018 doing a summer class and a fall class anatomy and physiology 1 and 2 and did very well at my community college, same school where my career started. ive done nothing with my chemistry degree and ended up working for my dad doing home improvements which i do like to do even though almost every person i worked with was an asshole in one way or another. right now i am gearing up to do a home renovation with my dad and hopefully turning it for a nice profit.

chemistry sucks because you have to do a doctorate to earn money, and the competiton is fierce. also, chemistry doesn't have much math or physics, so it's hard to switch careers if you want to work outside of chemistry (unless you want to be a doctor or pharmacist). it's easy for a math or physics major to go into data science or banking, or go to grad school for economics or finance. it's not the same for chemistry majors.

Last year I chose IT because it is all about computers and coding but after 1 year my mom scolded me for failing it’s major subjects and the tragedy is ongoing to this very day. Fear of not being able to graduate, I was thinking about shifting courses by selecting those which are the ones that are suitable for me and I wanted to pursue something more interesting. At first, I thought my current course could be simple and easy but now I learned the truth that it is relatively complicated and it triggers severe headaches. My anger issues are worsening right now and I have been stressed out ever since and I barely got any sleep I will be extending my life in college hoping to pick the right decision. God, Damn! Why did I choose that course in the first place when I knew that it won’t be fit for my career path!?

You dont have 18 years to figure out what you want to do. On average, you start to figure out what you like in middle school. That gives you about 6 years to figure out what you want to do. Then you have about 40 working years to grind out saving enough money for retirement if you are lucky.....lucky enough to avoid cancer or some debilitating disease that cuts your life shorter than expected. As a healthcare professional, I have seen death too often, and life only goes by faster as you get older.

So, could you maybe tell me a bit more about how your degree was, what more can you do with it, besides teaching, and why do you think it was a wrong choice for you? Hey there Fried Lemon! Really sorry it took so long to get back to you. I really appreciate you watching the video and leaving a comment here =) The degree I earned was for teaching English as a second language to high school students. In my program I learned things like linguistics, educational theory, and literature. A lot of my classmates who didn't become teachers decided to pursue degrees or careers in law, psychology. writing, editing, or school administration. I found that especially in the writing or communications fields like content or freelance writing--English education was helpful in finding work. I definitely still believe that the teaching profession is an honorable and worthwhile career. For me though, I decided to pivot careers because: 1. While I have the utmost respect for the passionate people who continue today in the education field and I loved the work I did--I wanted a different financial situation for the future. I decided to pursue that outside of education. 2. I have many other interests outside of English, writing, and literature. I wanted to see if I could find a profession that encompassed more of those other interests of mine. 3. After teaching several years in Japan and the Philippines, I couldn't quite see myself doing the same thing in the US as a long-term career. I understand it would've been different but at that point, I believed I wanted something else. I hope these answer your questions. Again, really sorry it took so long to get back to you--thanks again for checking out the vlog and I wish you all the best on your decision!
