I played a BROKEN fighting game character when it mattered 

"Broken" is so overused these days. Most people just use it as a synonym for "good". IMO, "broken" should be reserved for things that truly break the game -- characters that have no losing matchups, tactics that have no counterplay, glitches that were not intended and circumvent the design of the game. If your only choices are 1) using the broken character/tactic or 2) losing, that's broken. Short of that, things can still be "really really good" and worthy of nerfs, but they're not broken.

I watched a jmcrofts video earlier today, where he was holding one of his “jmcups” and the fighting game had Jesus Christ as a character, where he had perfect block strings of hitting two times then using a “holy light” where you literally spam that and the opponents mash has to be PERFECT to get out of it on top of the fact that the Jesus Christ has to actually MESS UP the input for you to be able to mash out of it, EASY combos that do massive damage, he can heal half of his health in an instant once every fight. I hate ui goku. His mash potatoes, his stupid hit boxes, everything about him but at least he is not Jesus Christ 🤣

I think the number one culprit for character strength being blown outta proportion is context. if people saw clips of a character with insane oki but don’t understand the situations that are required to do it they might assume that the character can just do that shit after any knockdown without considering stuff like meter, screen position or if it’s character specific. watching full matches on a character with analysis like yours do a great job giving that context needed to understand the characters strength better. good stuff.

I think it would've been Northwest Majors IV that I first even learned of the concept of a character being banned at something, and it happened to be Koko at that event. Although I was just playing ProjectM that day and then had only heard of it in the background. Oh, wow, when it cuts to you on camera I think that *was* the very same ballroom (though I'm not sure if that was the same event).

UI is definitely not broken. "Broken" is defying the rules of the game and it requires no actual skill to accomplish. UI only fills one of those boxes in that anyone who can abuse square can win a match most of the time. UI isn't broken in the slightest, because there are ways to counter him. The problem is that it's _too hard_ to counter him, not in the "I'm too lazy to lab" way but in the "it takes 10+ hours of lab just to beat his flips" way. DBFZ is probably the most balanced fighting game at the moment, so stop calling him broken, UI is just too good.

No one is really arguing UI is broken. But here's the thing: 1) He's the most represented character in tournaments (and I assume online play) by a long shot and he's the one character with the best tournament results, I don't need to remind you UI won every National. So let's be real here, the character is clearly way too good and you are most likely handicapping yourself by not picking him 2) Everyone already hates Super Dash because of the ridiculous forced RPS situations it creates, we don't like guessing this much, but the game forces us to. Then they release a character who introduces even more guessing: this is why playing against UI is so stressful and frustrating. 3) As you said it yourself, UI can mash like no other character. This is somewhat problematic, even though pro players don't like to admit auto combos are a relevant part of the game. What do you do when someone is whiffing buttons? You Super Dash at them. Oh, but you can't really Super Dash at UI because his auto combo will eat your SD even if you're above him. This is why I want to see UI nerfs. I don't believe he's broken in a mechanical way, but the way he changes the game when on screen is so toxic that he shouldn't be this good

Let's be honest, people -mostly casuals- hate UI Goku cause they have to be patient and respect their opponent. Ive never lost from a masher (either mashing L or Reflect) since UI came in and im truly grateful about that, you see, correct me if im wrong but its really stupid having to create gaps between your blockstrings which you most of the times learn to do gapless in training mode to beat mashers.

I feel like if they nerfed some of the options UI has like side switching beam speed, he'd be alright. His options are beatable like wake up, but his 2h is annoyingly unfair.

1st, Talk to em LK! Yo you dont think that Gotenks machine gun combo is broken? Cause I know I need to get better but that combo is a it much dude. Honestly, the fact the he is SO relevant in discussion. And you've had to make so many videos discussing him and how to beat him kinda speaks for itself. He IS without a doubt overperforming. I don't want him to be destroyed but he definitely needs to be toned down a little. His options do have counters. But its so frustrating feeling like you're trying 5 times as hard as the UI player. Just to lose to some dude rolling his face against his controller.

Kokonoe I guess is broken, only played Blazblue to mess around with the homies so I wouldn't know. I feel like this type of argument is similar to "what about X". Where its character in game Y isn't broken cuz look at what character in game X can do. I'm just a casual and I just got back into fighting games thanks to Strive. From my perspective, showing what a "true broken" character looks like from another game isn't really convincing me that UI isn't busted. I haven't even seen UI play, just heard people whine about him, and people like Lord Knight telling me he isn't busted because "look at this character from a different game". I dunno, just my two cents on the broken character type dialogue. I think it would help to convince ignorant scrubs like me if you show why the "broken" character is just top tier and not "broken".

Eh. Kokonoe was broken with the super for sure, but if you wanna see real broken bonkers stuff I'd recommend Smash Bayonetta / Diddy Kong. On UI goku: 4:45 "Kokinoe has more chain options, more damage, better corner carry, better neutral." (all things UI Goku had). 5:34 "She's fast, does a lot of damage" (Again, UI goku). UI goku ignores mechanics too and I would argue more severely that "magnet" from Kokonoe, which a couple other characters have versions of. UI goku is less fun to play against because of the "counter" mechanic and just doing things 100% better than other characters like corner carry. Kokonoe was broken for sure, but people hate UI goku more for reasons of him being unfun than him being actually broken. People hate Axl. Axl isn't broken. He's just unfun to play against.

I think it’s a bit disingenuous to say balance doesn’t matter in a game because it “doesn’t have tournaments”. If people started playing tournaments only then does it matter? You could make up arguments for just about any game that DOES have tournaments. “Blazblue is an anime fighter so balance doesn’t matter”; “Melee was a party game so balance doesn’t matter”. Of course it matters because the game exists! Just because it doesn’t matter to you doesn’t mean it doesn’t matter. Disregarding a game because X means you can eventually disregard all games that you don’t play because X, if that makes sense. It’s not like we can patch Mighty Morphing Power Rangers cuz it’s on the SNES but you get the idea. Why did I even write this comment? I dunno but it’s here. I’ve never even played that power Rangers game so whatever.

I do disagree with you LK on ONE point specifically about UI Goku. I think it's unfair that he can do Unrestrained Will (Hold L+M while in a knockdown or recovery) in HARD Knockdown SPECIFICALLY. I think he should have to take the Hard Knock like everyone else in the game. Everything else about him is fine, it's just strong DBFZ tools, but Unrestrained Will on Hard Knockdown is the only thing I feel ACTUALLY has to go

People complaining about UI being broken have never had to face genuinely busted characters like fucking Petshop from JJBA. The character was immune to low attacks in his regular animation, because he is a bird and his idle animation is flying above most lows in the game.

i hear ya but at the same time i dont, you are comparing a 1v1 character these characters are supposed to have more options and shit they can do solo , UI is close to this dumb shit in a 3v3 where characters are supposed to have flaws that your team should fill. Also him not being as broken as those characters is not a reason not to nerf him. Lastly , the character is literal cancer to the game it reminds me of early Gordeau in Uniel many of our players quit because of that character, UI is not healthy for the game nerf his ass.
