I Played Chess in an Anechoic Chamber.

In this video, I tried to play chess in one of the world's quietest rooms - an anechoic chamber. There are a lot of people on the internet claiming that you go crazy by sitting in in one of these rooms, as you can start hearing sounds you’ve never heard before.

Anechoic chambers are not an altogether pleasant experience. It’s hard to understand just how quite it is and the consequences of that. It is so quite that you can hear your own heart beating, because there is no background noise to drown it out, the whoosh of your own breath, your bones creaking whith every little movement, tinnitus-like hum, but so much louder without any other sounds to distract you.

I've been in an anechoic chamber. The weirdness comes from the fact that usually you hear your own voice both through your ears and through your skull (bone conduction), but in an aneochoic chamber the first effect is suppressed, no sound comes back to your ear, so your own voice sounds "muted" to you, which is really disturbing.

@@mtaur4113 You can experience it by wearing both ear plugs and ear protection. That way you should be able to have a 0db background sound. Difference in that from an anechoic chamber is that you can't hear anything except your voice through your skull

Had occasion to do work in an anechoic chamber a few years back, a colleague would start getting anxiety attacks within a few minutes of being inside, where I personally would be happy to spend hours inside. Admitted my first time was strange for 10-15 minutes until my brain calibrated, but after that I found it serene.

This is definitely one of the most unique chess content videos I've seen so far... I would love to be in one of those quiet rooms by myself for at least a few minutes to see what it's like, but I feel like if I was in there with someone else I would be really self-conscious about how they might hear me swallowing or my stomach growling or something like that. I don't know if I could focus on a chess game in there!

I have worked in an electrically quiet room, used in my case to test aerials for satellites. The room is electrically quiet because it is covered in prisms made of carbon loaded foam. The secondary effect is that the room is acoustically quiet as well. I found the room more creepy when I was there alone, after a time you could hear your own heartbeat.

I don’t think Anna realizes the impact she’s making on the chess world. Her videos are so well-done, with exciting thumbnails and titles that make you want to click, and because of that they get pushed by the algorithm and draw people into chess. She’s the sole reason I started playing and soon chess became my passion. I started in February and I’m now 850! Thanks Anna!

I think you were at a disadvantage because he is purely Swedish and his power comes from silence and isolation (at least that's what I heard about people who live in Sweden). And you were born into a noisier world (and spent time with Andrea) so such environment wasn't giving you the upper hand. GGs. Although I'd hoped you'd win)
@petrac2840

That's a very stereotypical and hugely untrue view of Swedish people. Sure, Stockholm is quiet compared to New York or any other huge, crowded city. And we have lots of small towns, nature and forests. Sitting next to a stranger on the bus almost feels illegal, but we're not "used to silence" more than any other people from a small town. And for the isolation... Some (few) like to sit alone in a cabin in the forest. But most enjoy the company of friends and family.

This was an excellent idea, to have a chess game in a chamber like this! On top of that interesting twist, your narration was very good, keeping me [the listener] engaged the entire time! I often zone out 3/4 through. I mean I love the game but it's hard to follow sometimes lol 😊 The part where you say: "...he pushed his rook to the second file, and asked my queen where she was going to go. My queen had no answers." - that was a spectacular moment in chess, and narration - you should get a golden pawn award for this 😎💖💖💖💖💖💖💖👍

Until you have actually "experienced" an anechoic chamber you will have a very flawed picture of what it is like to be in there. It isn't only silent. It lacks echo for all the sounds you take for granted. I have never tried to play chess in one but I have been in one (except the pieces on the wall was a lot bigger). It really throws you off and, at least, I was very uncomfortable. There was no echo at all and it felt like every sound was "drawn" on a chalk board by you and you had very dry skin on your fingers. I remember being very excited going in and extremely relieved leaving. I have a hard time grasping how Anna endured it. Mad props!

You'd think so, but because those small noises don't interact with the environment, they don't provide any relief from the silence. Instead they accentuate the absolute lack of any sound reflection. You could scream at the top of your voice in there, and you'd still get no relief.

Botez sister mostly focusing on their Twitch (many of us don't watch Twitch) and not much content at their RU-vid channel (mostly shorts). I think the tolerance to silence depends on personality type. I feel very calm during silent periods, even hearing my breathing, heart beat & stomach noises! Your chess opponent also seems to have that tolerance to silence, where it does not bother him.
