My biggest improvement came after learning to leave my ego at home. Just playing shots I know I've practiced, playing save, and never trying to show off.
@@GolfSidekick took me half my life to learn what playing shot-by-shot really means. Or maybe took half my life to control my mind on the course enough to play shot by shot 😂
This channel should be required for anyone starting out in golf. In the last couple years as a subscriber, I've learned so much about course management that I break 90 pretty regularly. I even used the 6-6-6 system to break 80 last year for the first time. Waddalife!
I started playing golf in 2020 (had to do something during the lockdown). I limited my practice to the range and hitting into a net in my attic, but I finally made it to the course late in 2021. There has been progress (slow, but progress), starting with rounds in the 120’s and gradually working down to scores around 105-108, which is where I’ve been hovering thru the 10 or so rounds I’ve been able to play so far this year. Horrendous, yes, but I’m still a newbie (nevertheless, it’s still frustrating). I found this channel a couple of weeks ago and have been gorging on the vids, several of them I’ve watched at least a dozen times. I love Matt’s teaching style and the videos are pure gold. I took the “breaking 100” videos and Matt’s timely and practical advice to heart and I had my best round today with a 101 (and not coincidentally, it was my first round after receiving my Waddaplaya merch - of which I will be buying more ASAP!!😁) While I didn’t break 100 (due to an epic meltdown on a par 5 - the bunker refused to let go of my ball, as well as a particularly schizophrenic green on a par 3), I had so much fun! I left my driver and my hybrids in the trunk of car and made it an “all-iron affair” - it was great! I still had misses but they weren’t devastating misses. I was able to scramble, stick to the plan, THINK, and still post decent scores on the holes. And the best part was that there was absolutely NO STRESS (even with it being my first time on this particular course - and it wasn’t an easy one). I can’t express how much this channel - and my play today - has done for my confidence; I have no doubt I will break 100 my next round! Thanks for a great channel, Matt. Your videos are simply fabulous - and did I say the merch is GREAT? 🤣🤣
Ever since I watched your channel I started using fairway woods or hybrids off the tee way more often. Only hit my driver when I’m feeling confident some days or on long holes where it clearly helps. Game has improved drastically and I see way too many high handicappers grabbing driver every hole and just ruining their rounds losing balls
On the second hole he hit his 7 iron off the tee 182. He's got no problem breaking 100 if he can do this. Clearly for him it's a case of not slicing driver and losing stupid shots. Unfortunately, I hit my 7 iron about 120, and then maybe miss it. So this won't work for me.
Breaking 90 was course management and self honesty. Playing comfortably within the game you have on a given day to the safe spots on the course (from correct tees) will result in breaking 90. 60% of the time, it works every time.
Great to watch. I’m heading this week to FL to play hardest course I’ve ever played (I’m a 17 hcp). This video about thinking 10 seconds and having confidence + commitment is exactly what I need.
This strategy has proven by myself. I got 97 yesterday. I still used my driver for 3 holes, but the rest of holes were 3 woods and always used 7i to be my lowest iron for approach shot. This is definitely useful! Thank you so much!!
This really helps me a lot. I use no higher than a 5 hybrid now, and no lower than a pitching wedge. Six clubs total = less decision making. I hit a lot more fairways (or at least I can find most of my tee shots), and my own "par" is one or two over depending on the difficulty of the hole. I'm so close to breaking 100 now. Thanks.
Two weeks ago I scored 98, spraying my driver all over the place, topping fairway woods and losing it with hybrids. Last week I left everything longer than a 5 iron in the car and scored 85. D+9i or 5i+6i is still two shots, except with D it wasn't usually +9i, it was a chip out sideways from the cabbages and on for 3 if I was lucky. Confuse-us he say, "It's not how, it's how many."
This has been my favorite video of yours so far. I’ve lost distance since Covid. So I’m trying to play well whilst working on my swing. Course management is important when you only average 200 off the tee!
Golfsidekick does not forget that golf is about getting the ball in the hole in the fewest number of shots. It is NOT sbout how far you hit a driver or how often you can smash a blade .... so refreshing to watch the confidential GS
I’ve done this slightly differently. Bought a 7 wood and using it more and more where I once might have used driver just to make sure I stay on the course. Played today and started really bad (nervous playing with new people) so I went back to just keeping it on the course and playing safe and managed to get in rhythm and shoot an 80 🎉🎉
I just recently broke 90 for the first time. The biggest thing that helped me was thinking before each shot and when explaining the shot to myself, if at any point it felt like a hero shot, I stopped myself and thought of a different plan. Keeping the ball in play that way saves sooooo many shots
I just shot my first ever sub-50 nine hole round (46) by using your break 100 series and this video. Only pulled driver ONCE. Most tee shots were a 4 hybrid 180-190 carry with some nice rollout, middle of the fairway all day. Only used 7i and below from there, haven't practiced the hybrid from the deck yet. anything above 150 in, split it into two shots leaving myself either 110 in with PW, 100 with the gap, 80 with the sand wedge. Waddalife!
This is sooo awesome to watch because i only use my 7i as my longest iron... im yet to gain confidence in the other clubs but the main thing is i am enjoying playing again..
Love it, I'm on a similar journey. Broke 90 for the first time and then things fell apart, I've been having lessons and made a change that I'm starting to do more consistently on the course to brilliant effect, after scoring in the hundreds for a while. It really helped me to do exactly this, I played with a 7i and below (zen golf), not chasing scores but instead practicing to swing the way that I wanted. Driver has been interesting, and when I get past the mental hiccup that is trying to smash it's pretty awesome 😎 Can't wait to see Bdog swing more freely!
Good video. I usually shoot in the mid-80's, but still the most joyous moment in golf for me was the first time I broke 100 many years ago. I was the first time I felt I was playing golf instead of it playing me. Also, great advice about playing your second shot when there is no chance of reachbing the group ahead. So many times I have seen someone hit a drive about 170 yards and then wait for the green to clear 220 yards ahead. Even if they teed it up and hit driver again they would still be 50 yards short.
I played a round this morning where I left my driver, 3w, and hybrid at home. I moved off the tips and broke 90 for the first time in a dozen rounds. Plus, and this might be attributed to my new Free Bird Polo, I made two birdies. Waddaround! Waddalife!
@@BloodyYTNamingNonsense I recently returned to golf after many years of not playing. When I stopped playing I consistently shot in the mid 80s. These days I play with my 72 year old father who can no longer hit the ball very far and plays from the front tees. With my long break, I have lost my accuracy and consistency but not my distance. I’ve been playing from the tips as a distance handicap against my dad. At our course, the difference between the front and back tees is over 1500 yards but I still out drive him most of the time (although he now beats me most of the time). Right now my enjoyment of the game is being able to get out and play with my dad (my mom plays with us too) and not worrying too much about how much my game has slipped. Inside 150 yards is where I’ve lost the most strokes but I definitely lose strokes off the tee since when I miss the fairway, I miss BIG! I’m going to start leaving my ego (and woods) at home, change tees, and let that be my distance handicap.
@@jamestamrat923I get 9 or 10 rounds in a year at this point and I’ve been shooting mid to upper 80s with an occasional round north of 90. I managed to break 40 for 9 holes four times in the last two years. My driver does live in my bag but it only comes out a few holes a round. For the most part, it’s either a 3 wood or 2 hybrid off the tee.
My improvement is pactice a lot for 2 putting or less and of course 100meters shot, and i always try to make the approach shot at 60 m or 100m,its all about mental. Last round ive got 96, with no lose ball, 1 birdie, 2 pars, and 1 chip in. What a day Thank you matt
Matty I loved the Part3 Bangkok new clubs adventure. Was laughing so hard 😂 i almost choked at the end. Please keep up the great work. Love your attitude.
I have started learning golf from 20th April through an excellent coach, and in parallel started watching random golf videos. During those videos, I can across your channel, and I am so happy that I found you. I immediately stopped watching all other channels. Since then, I have been listening only to my coach (75%) and your channel (25%). And, it is working wonders. After 10 coaching lessons, my coach and I went to play on the course on Sunday late afternoon, when there is no one around. We played 5 holes [10(par 4),11(par 3),12(par 5),15(par 4),16(par 4)]. I shot down these holes in 29 shots :D using only 7,8,9 irons and PW, SW + Putter. I am thrilled by this result. I will be going back to training for 10 more sessions as I am consistently hitting right, and then will go out and play a full course. I will post the score here once I do that. Thank you for inspiring me with your videos.
Oh man! playing 18 holes by walking the whole course is extremely tough!! I played from white tees (5139 yards, par 70) and scored 109. I am so happy with this result as I was dead after 12 holes and continued playing on steam. Without this channel, i would have scored 120+. My immediate goal is now to get under 100, but I also know the part of my game that I need to improve in order to do that. So, few more range practise sessions to get my awful tee shot corrected to a decent level. And then I am confident of breaking 100 in my 2nd golf game.
I have found that my most reliable clubs are my driver (170-180 carry), 4 iron (160-170 carry), 6 iron (150-150 carry) and then my 7, 8, and 9 irons are becoming more accurate. As I progressed, I am finding myself missing more and more often to the left (right handed). Even my driver has started to evolve into a natural draw. Your channel has been critical in moving my scores into more consistent sub 100. I even posted an 89 on a 5800 yard course last month. Thanks for the content, Matt. I don’t know where I would be without it.
finally broke 100 yesterday! My normal tee club wasn’t working for me so I went to the 7 iron from the 4th hole onwards after remembering this video with B-Dog. I’ve never had such a good run of bogeys and pars, I would bet that if I had used the 7 from the start I would have been close to breaking 90. Never enjoyed a round so much and couldn’t believe how many par putt opportunities I had! Keep the videos coming 🤙
Broke 100 for the first time this weekend! what help me was playing comfortable shots instead of going for broke on longer holes, I also had a stretch of bad holes in a row at the start of the back 9 (triple, quad, triple) and after that, I had to really dig down and just pretend like I was starting a whole new round, once i stopped feeling sorry for myself I finished the back nine with mostly bogeys and pars. ended with a 99 but I know I could've had a 95 if I had stayed focused the whole round. these videos have helped me a lot as this is only the 2nd year of my golf career
I broke 90 for the first time last year, by playing with a complete stranger and talking his ear off! He was so interesting that I forgot all about my score, and didn't realise I'd done it until after the round. Love your mindset, appreciate the content, what a man.
My best score was 87, scored a few weeks ago. Biggest contributors to the round : being relaxed, not keeping track of my score, lower expectations and great company 👍
First time was hitting hybrid off the tee, and playing with goal of +1 over par on each hole. Put away the 60 degree wedge outside of bunkers. Right after your first video. 60% of the time worked every time.
PLEASE PLEASE make a dingleberry patch for the golf bag for anyone who has ever been given scheiser swing advice from a pro teacher. It would serve as a great reminder to keep it simple and not over think things. It’s golf…it’s meant to be fun 🤩
I realized when i went to break 100 for the first time last year, that golf is simply an exercise in presence. When i let myself relax over the ball, breathe, relax, and be present with positive self talk/confidence, i perform sooo much better - Thank you playa, learning so much from you and tell everyone about your vids! Waddaman
It was my first time breaking 100…. My boyfriends kept me relaxed at every hole. Smooth strokes all day.. also it was after watching Golf Sidekick’s break 100 video the morning of.
My break 100 story involved the use of a 3 wood, 5 iron, and "chipper" club. My driver was a HUGE problem but I could hit fairly straight off the tee with a 3 wood. 3 wood from the fairway was useless, but I could hit a fairly respectable 5 iron. I could NOT hit an approach wedge but somehow I came across the "chipper" that I could use very consistently. I had a slight fade with it on longer shots, but I adjusted for playing that. I just had to make sure I put myself into the best position to run a low pitch and run up to and onto the green. That meant NO bunker or water carries, etc.. But, once I knew what I had to do, I made it happen. The putting has not really been a problem for me so I knew that if I could GET IT ON THE GREEN, the rest was good. I continued to work on the driver and wedges off course and didn't really use them until I got better with them. Anyway, this 3 wood, 5 iron, chipper combo got me into the 90's. Eventually when the other clubs came around I actually got down into the 80's.
What helped me first break 90. Not adding up my scores as I went, and not knowing what I needed to break 90, I ended the round with a birdie and par rather then 2 blowup holes.
Broke the 100 barrier late last season, WotP was major contributing factor. Driver was not being agreeable, so it stayed at home. Freshly fit new irons and wedges bred a new level of confidence, especially on approaches. And taking to heart, "don't do dumb stuff." Once I broke 100, had 6 18 hole rounds in the 90s and 4 9 holers in the 40s. My course is just becoming fully open, (temp greens and rough conditions after a tough winter), the the quest for sub 90 begins...
Playa, I broke 90 for the first time after 2 years. Here’s what helped: Confidence in chipping takes pressure off approach shots. Using a favorite club (hybrid for me) Read Ben Hogans book Play golf, not golf swing
I can SOOOOOO relate to BDog. I was on the other spectrum of playing golf. I was managing 4-7 rounds per month. But my game management and ball striking was going down hill. From breaking 100 pretty easily to blowing out over 100 more regularly. I had also invested in lessons with our club pro. Which has been a massive help to work out what the hell I was doing wrong. It's been a lot of hard homework at the range. But as in this video, you need to take several steps back and relearn your mind and body. Gary Player stated the biggest fact of golf. CONFIDENCE. Take that away and you will never go forward in this perplexing game. Stripping our amature game back to the basics is the quickest and only effective way to gain confidence and the ability to build our game up again.
I still do the same sometimes I hit my 6 iron off the tee and always get good results. I’m a 22 handicapper and it works I broke 90 with this a week ago
so many tips from this channel. the most impactful one for me has been only hit the clubs your are most confident and committed in, then adjust your game/strategy from there. for me this is like 5 clubs. 3 wooder of the tee then 6-7 iron in. also laying up to a good distance on the par 5ers. stop for 10 missippippis, take in information, visualize shot, hit the ball, enjoy life. were playing golf, not golf shot. thank you golf sidekick. waddalyfe! dressing in the finest of threads, like the kochenbalz polo, also helps.
My biggest improvement came by not counting my score as I played and just concentrated on the next shot. Didn't matter whether the previous shot was good, bad or indifferent as you can't change anything it's done. You can only influence the next shot.
This is where my game is currently at. Mid 90s low 100s. It takes me 5 shots on par 3s, slices with the driver, chips that roll off the greens etc..... Lately I go walking with a 3 iron, driver, 6, hybrid, 8, gap wedge and putter. I also purchased a 68 degree that helps around the green.
Over the winter I built a Titleist set with only irons. Played them a few times. Makes me think more. Have not been able to break 90 for 18 holes. Have had a few 43 over 9 holes so I know that I can get it done
I'm doing this right now, I only play 3 wood (15), 5 hybrid (24), 7 iron (31), 9 iron(40), Gap Wedge(52), Lob Wedge (60), Putter. Less club choices to think about but enough clubs to learn and play good golf. I'm forced to think about the course and sometimes I may have to get creative to learn different shots.
I am usually pretty bad. Shooting 130s-140s. My first time out this season was yesterday. I used my 5w, 7i, PW, SW, and putter. I shot 120. It was amazing. I really could feel the confidence gain with being able to focus on only those clubs and was feeling a lot more comfortable; I feel super confident that after practicing on the range with those clubs only, chipping and putting, and some better course management next time around I'll be breaking 100 in no time.
First time I broke 90 was because I wasn’t keeping score. Not thinking about score and focusing on each individual shot is an absolute game changer broski’s
Sending this to my new to golf friends after our round yesterday. I tried to have them hit from shorter tees, and to stick to higher irons, just to get on fairways and give themselves a shot, but instead they would slice and hook woods and driver and ended up throwing away a fresh 24pack of balls because they couldn't get out of there own way.
So funny story: watched this video, did the “new par” on my card, and just played each shot with confidence. What do you know? Shot a 98 for a lifetime PR! Thanks for the videos! You’re crushing it 😁🤙
I love your way of thinking and adopted to mine and my 13yr old game. We usually shot close to 120 and yesterday for 1st time ever we both broke 100 and my son got 5 pars on the back 9. Is it weird that I hear you talking to me on the course 🤔🤣
BDog is back! It’s funny I had the same bad pull last time I played with my longer clubs. Shorter clubs were fine. I was planning to play an irons only round next. Great minds…
Broke 90 for the first time by playing with my best golfing buddy. Talked through my shots with him, laughed and chatted a lot. Wasn’t even thinking about my score.
What has helped me consistently break 100 several times in succession now besides Tigger’s Bridgestone ball is ‘the way of the playa’. Some Dalai Lama Baus youtuber has taught me how I am to play the course and not let the course play me. Every night before I play, I listen to over 4 hours of his wiseness-ness then go play pumped up on golf zen that day chilled. Plus I carry some of his top quality shiesen merchandise on my bag and person. Zummmmm, wadda Dalai.
I am actually going to try this in my league this week. Remove the driver, 5 wood, 5 iron, and 6 iron to see what happens. Thanks for the tip on recovery golf.
Broke 100 recently. I watched one of your lessons where you received the advice of keeping your head much more still. I had never thought about doing that. It smoothed out my tempo and striking consistency. Less head > more head = good for my head.
Broke 90 after i started cource management. Placing my ball inside 100 meters leaving me a more confident shot into the green. Taking the big D out of the bag and relying on the 3 iron off the tee. And taking the hazards out of play. But most important…. Folowing the CENTURY system 😉
I shoot around 100 but have peak rounds at 85-87. No clue why or how. If you end up in Dallas, TX at any point, I promise I'd make for quite the interesting video
I can feel it in my bones that I am going to break 100 in the next 12 months. I just did a 104 on a course I have never played before (Preakness Valley, NJ). I only used my 6-iron to tee off (outside of par 3s) and towards the end of the round I noticed how much better my pitches and chips were when I was committing to them and not overthinking, not decelerating, and not using my hands to manipulate the ball. Towards the end I just let stuff happen. Only 2 out of my 14 6-iron tee shots were bad and in both occasions I got nervous and tried to hit it too hard rather than trying to let my swing flow at 80%. My focus over the next 6 months is going to be pitching, chipping, and putting. I feel like my irons are going to get me within pitching or chipping distance no problem either within "regulation" or with one extra shot. I just need to have more trust and more practice within a 100 yards. I can really feel its gonna happen. Can't wait to get there. Thanks for the guidance and inspiration Sidekick!!
my own experience to break 90 and get scores down was, get it up the fairwar, second shot as long as possible, near the green, the nearer the better, then rely on my short game to pitch close and sink the puts. My shortgame handicap is about 18 better than my long game handicap!!!
First break 100 was definitely caused by shift in mentality. I decided to play round so that each hole had 1 extra stroke for par (par 5 --> par6). That meant I did not need to smash my driver into the woods on the right but I could play shorter but more confident shots. Managed to shoot 98 which I was happy with as I have played golf just for 12 months.
I broke 100 and 90 by playing shots I knew how to play, because I practiced them at the range or on the chipping green. My scores go way up if I start trying to play fancy golf. "There are no hero shots, only stupid shots" - The chief playa
I’m breaking into 85 range but would be better to leave the 5 wood to driver at home. I’m try this. 3 hybrid or 6 iron tee shots 3 hybrid and 6 down and I could probably break the cycle. I’m plateaued
The biggest revelation that helped me break 100, and then 90, was to not just grab the longest possible club in the bag for the remaining yardage. Actually trying to plan it out, even if the execution of that plan was poor, helped me keep the ball in bounds more and avoid massive numbers. Also: some rounds alone. No stress, no fuss, no unnecessary driver to keep up with friends = Easy life.
Some of my best rounds have been solo. I love playing with my buddies, but when you’re by yourself, it’s only your voice you hear, your voice talking thru the shot. The only downside is not having witnesses there to see me drop a 30 footer for the bird! 😜
Learned to take a big scheisse before the round not in the halfway hut. Then shaved in an immaculate J-Bone beard and I became one with the course. Aside from that it was taking an iron off the tee and improving my short game.
10:45, if 7 iron wasn't the limit I would have hit a 4 iron and kept it low. Slight fade into the fairway. I find my 4 is the get out of trouble club in those situations...1/2 swing.
Mines not really distance mines dispersion mixed with not getting to practice. That and hitting the ball out of play and not playing to the miss. But cannot get out of my own head. Lost a ball to the right from 100 yards what I do hit the same shot , lose another ball. Then say oh yeah there’s the miss hit another ball and on the green. Your advice works if I just use it
