@jackscott5499
@jackscott5499 Год назад
Double trigger and a separate chain system for each side. And have it bend in the middle so it can lie flat over his knee in the boat. But each side bends into the water. Hold both triggers to go forward and hold only one to spin
@EdBrumley

You should have curved the handle so both props would be in the water at the same time. To turn you would lift 1 prop out of the water. Or create an outboard that hangs off the back.

Suggestions on the paddle 1) shaft instead of a chain, that will stop the water climbing up. 2) angle the poles so both are in the water at the same time ^ shape. 3) turn the paddle part 90 degrees, so that the paddle is parallel to the boat, but of course keep the propellers pointed to the back. This will reduce drag and let it be a kind of rudder. And 4) if you wanted to get super fun, make the paddle part rotatable, so that it could be a proper rudder. Bicycle handlebars for stearing and all. Love everything you make, best to you and yours this holiday season!
@03Trekker
@03Trekker Год назад
100% agree, I immediately thought of the shaft concept as I assumed the chain would wear and potentially break inside that pole
@jeradw7420
@jeradw7420 Год назад
Also have 2 separate motors so only the one in the water is spinning.
@canonicaltom
@canonicaltom Год назад
A shaft is the right idea, but it still has to be more like a hybrid paddle and not just a double boat motor, to still maintain the concept. Would be interesting to have separate controls for the two sides so only the one in the water spins.
@cy4208
@cy4208 Год назад
I thought of this too,I decided not to comment on it because it’s basically just a portable motor you stick in the ground
@Rockit66
@Rockit66 Год назад
Agree. And if he had 2 drills that could rest comfortably on each side one could decide to turn with just one or forward with both. even reverse as the drills have that function. We are basically reverting back to the basic principles of a motorized boat now, but still a cooler way of driving it. I guess if the point was to absolutely use paddles, it would be a wheel of paddles on both sides or something like that

Perhaps if the paddle shaft were bowed downwards at each end so that both props can propel the katak for forward movement... Instead of using propellers consider using impellers since they are in a housing, hopefully a bit safer. Also is there a way to mount a float switch (like what’s on a sump pump) on each end of the paddle, wired to separate electric motors then the motors would only turn on when in the water? This would help with safety and save battery life without the operator having to consciously think about turning the motors on and off repeatedly.

@ZeroSuitSamo
@ZeroSuitSamo Год назад
That paddle has serious potential. It would be really cool to have an array of moisture detectors, or maybe even as simple as a float, to have each side automatically spin up once they are fully submerged. You could also go to an internal drive shaft design instead of a chain, with a 90 degree gear drive to spin the props, which could also allow for some gear ratio shenanigans of you wanted. It would also make it easier to seal the center section off from water lol. Then lastly just make everything out of composite materials as much as possible to save weight. Carbon fiber drive shaft inside a carbon fiber outer shaft would be ideal. But I could totally see this being at least somewhat practical. The only problem I see is that fundamentally it's going to cause the kayak to zig-zag more I think
@ZeroSuitSamo
@ZeroSuitSamo Год назад
Oh, also maybe have a directional switch that detects the flow of water which will then tell the motor which way to spin. That way it can still be automatic and be used to paddle forwards and back

If you built the oar with an approximate 75° angle at the center so both paddles would be in the water at the same time it may work better. To fix the problem with the chain carrying water into the boat, use a drive shaft system like a string trimmer uses, in fact you could purchase a Stihl KombiEngine (used for multiple tool attachments) and rig it to drive both oars driveshafts.

Colin has just a brilliant mind. Now imagine, an oar just like he made but, it is angled at the ends so that you dont have to keep swiveling left and right. It has a very powerful lith ion battery pack in the middle where you hold it and two electic turbines just as Colin made but not needing the chain drive for obvious reasons. And waterproof it all. Colin literally created the no paddle electric paddle.
@blahorgaslisk7763
@blahorgaslisk7763 Год назад
A lot of people have posted about similar versions, but they all have the same problems. If you angle the ends down like you suggest there will be a torque acting on the paddle twisting the handle in your grip. Someone suggested adding bars going from the paddle to rest on your shoulders to help keeping the paddle from twisting in your grip. It makes everything larger and more clumsy. But the biggest problem is that you now have a impractical motor boat instead of a canoe. And if that's what you want just get an electric outboard motor. It's cheap, easily available and a lot more practical than any of these paddle ideas. What Colin was after was a paddle to use in a canoe, but with props on. Not for it to be useful, convenient or in any way practical but to be fun and absurd. And that it certainly was. It fullfilled all the design criteria, but was perhaps just slightly to scary dangerous to use, which is saying a lot when it's a Colin Furze design.

2.0 idea : Mount it to a canoe, put the bars at an angle in the middle, make the shaft rotatable so the fins stay in the water and can be rotated horizontally and the motors on a gyro. Also a chain cover so the water stays outside the vessel.

Put the batteries low in the canoe, bring only a flexible wire to the paddle, via a jack. But the paddles are wrong... static paddle part negates the rushing water in the center. You'll need to go thin protection rim...... Hmmmm, maybe the static longitudinal parts that can be made to rotate in place, to let the water through in powered mode, and resist water in paddle mode. Those longitudinal parts, kept shut by a spring, that is kept open when the motor for the fans is run.

I’ve loved these projects for years! I’m no genius like Colin, but what if the paddle wasn’t a straight tube. What if it was angled at the grinder mount , say 30*… (like a tudor roof ) you could perhaps just lower it into the water and get equal propulsion? Anyway. Always impressive !!!

So good! Loved the build!!!! Idea for 2.0 upside down U shape 2 drills (one per side) so you steer with one drill and go forward with both.

You created the perfect example of why its important to test things in the field. The paddle is worthless but this video being shown at training seminars could be worth millions.

I do like that you were as surprised as anyone out here that that crazy death-device actually worked. Very nice, perhaps there should be an addition to your merch-- say, impact resistant headgear! Also surprised that tie device worked. Wonderful. So then, Merry Christmas and best to come in the New Year!

This is crazy! When you showed that water was coming up, I started brainstorming ideas to solve and after several ideas, realized you could make with two separate gears and chains so each was powered individually and could be sealed. Basically you made something with two trolling motors put together like an oar. And I love it!
@StalePhish

If there was to ever be a death oar v2.0 here are a few improvement ideas: 1) cowling around the propellers both for safety and to eliminate splashing 2) independent throttles for left and right 3) angled up like an A-frame so both could be in the water at once 4) mounted to a chest mount to take the weight off your arms!

And, most important; less speed, more torque. Props don't have to spin anywhere close to as fast as propellers do, and water is much harder to move than air.

You took the words out of my mouth with the angled frame but instead of chain drive, crown gears in the shaft, no water will come up
@trevorholland5032

5) mount it on the boat 6) call it an "outboard motor"
@nigelman9506

@@trevorholland5032 I think the whole point was to make it look like an oar and can be moved from boat to boat
