Hi everyone, here is my first low buy check in! A quick update on what I bought, the challenges and temptations, how I'm spending my time instead. I know it's only been a month, but I feel so far detached from my old consumerist habits. Spending my time reconnecting with the things I love... it's been so amazing thus far. I hope that you guys are doing well on your low buy challenge as well!

Another great and helpful video. Low buy year is going great so far! Only made essential purchases and ordered food in a couple of times. I can totally relate to the relief upon seeing my low credit card bill, this alone is a great motivator! Unsubscribing from retail stores has really helped in cutting down the urge to browse or shop a sale! 🤗 🙏🏽

I’ve already been doing a low buy challenge by accident since I started using YNAB last may. By budgeting for every dollar coming in it is great for planning and helps you think more about spending, since if you want to break from your plan then you have to take the money out of another budget. Ie if you want to buy more clothes maybe you take money out of the budget you saved for vacation

My tips for low buying include: - Only replace existing items that are worn out - Don’t buy online, only in shops - Only buy when you have an occasion coming up and not just on random days - Buy neutral colours with no patterns - Make a spreadsheet of everything you have in your wardrobe - Buy items that can be worn in both summer and winter

After almost 10 years of NOT buying lovely things for myself and only the very minimum that I needed my soul almost died, because I didn't pay enough attention and celebrating my beauty and feminine side. Now that I started shopping again and bought myself lovely clothes, skirts, tops, jewellery and even a new lipstick again from a french brand I actually love I finally start to thrive again. I'm not going to starve myself or my flat ever again to make everything beautiful.

@jornspirit

...maybe its really about balance... I have experienced when I too radically cut something out of my life, that was before part of it, it hurts eventually.. my self-advice is getting conscious and caring about what I do, how I spend my time and money and what I give attention to in my life... when unconscious habits start to become conscious , then what is not needed eventually falls away... peacefully - not in a harsh way... so: be loving with yourself... nothing can replace that xx

I never shopped additional clothes, shoes and makeup for about 3 years now. The new clothes that I have are mostly gifts from my loved ones (surprisingly they know my preferences). If my shoe gets broken I usually go to shoe repair shops and I only buy makeup when my previous one gets empty or expired (mostly consisting of lipbalms and tints only). I think my hoarding habits started when I was addicted to watching haul videos and new trends that I see from other people. There came a time in my life that I got financially broke and had health problems which made me transition to start being mindful in my shopping habits and adopt minimalism. Now I buy things that make better for my health like teas and supplements. I even tell my loved ones that if they want to give me a gift, its better to give me those because it makes me happier. I just recently found your channel and its a gem. Definitely worth subscribing

Last year I started doing a 30 day wait on purchases. I can so easily keep telling myself for a week that I “need” something when it’s just a materialistic want. A month really helps me to be realistic about it. I actually have waited even longer than a month and found myself really appreciating the few things that I wound up buying since implementing this rule because i believe they were worth the wait and actually needed to improve my life.

This was my first time hearing it phrased as “low buying”. Enjoyed the video, found out I’ve been doing this for the past 2 years (except the eating out part) Definitely the first step would be to unsubscribe those marketing emails and limit social media to reduce targeted ads. Banned myself from buying new makeup and skincare. Not having Amazon prime helps. My brain just gets too lazy to shop nowadays, it baffles me how I used to spend 4 hours at the mall when I was younger. So much truth about decluttering in our 30s! I’m doing good so far for my low buy challenge this year. I also had a retail therapy problem in the past which caused me a lot of stress bc I had to constantly clean and organize a ridiculous amount of stuff I’ve accumulated over the years. Not sure if I could ever be a minimalist but I’m definitely very mindful of what I buy now. I’m also working on decluttering and doing things I like instead of trying to fill the void in my life by buying unnecessary things. Couldn't agree more with you. So I had this philosophy of not buying things on full price and wait for the sale. When we got these season end sales, I would feel anxious and would want to explore everything because I refrained from shopping during the no-sale period and just shopping something at a discounted price was an outlet. But as I am growing old and maturing, I realise what a flawed approach that was which lead me to buy things unnecessarily just because they were on sale! I now only shop what I need. I add things to my cart and sometimes I have gone months without buying those. That way I only bring things into my life that I really really need. When the sale hits and if those items are discounted, great - but even of they are at normal prices, I buy because I am beyond sure I need those items! Lovely video, like always. Blessings to your new kitchen. May it totally turns out the way your heart desires! ❤️

I have a weakness for sales too! even if I didn't need it, I would browse "just in case" there was something there I liked and I could get it at a lower price point. But that's so great you have changed your ways. I really appreciate you sharing and for your lovely comment :)

I downloaded Sophie’s spending goals PDF and it’s been helping me so far! I started to apply all the methods, and the results after the first month were surprising, actually. I not just stopped to buy random and unnecessary things but also I sold a lot of clothes and items I didn’t need anymore! So now, I am more able to open my budget without fear, save for some hobbies incomes and get house’s wages all settled easier... even giving me space to bigger shopping ideas as fixing my home breakdowns or replace my running low 6 years old iPad to a new one for work and study. Worth it! Thanks Sophie!

love the update Sophie. I can't wait to see your reflection at the end of the year, you always have great insights. My "buy nothing new year" is going well and I am realizing how much I can find second hand. I feel so much better about my purchases when I know they are a more sustainable choice, but also higher quality and for less money. It also great because by buying second hand it usually forces me to wait a little while before I can find it and gives me time to contemplate the purchase.

You're doing great! Understanding the link between taking control of your attitude towards societal "norms" in re: how much stuff we have and consume versus the amount of personal power and monetary leverage you can have if you don't adhere to those norms is the key to this process. You're literally becoming accountable for your success in life, one smart decision at a time. Trading money for peace of mind during a temporary reno is definitely a good choice if it keeps you sane in the short term. And yes, house tour would be awesome! Have a great day!

I moved states recently and that really let me have a great time deciding what I wanted for my new life. I threw out and gave away so much, only taking what I truly wanted and needed. Now my new place feels like me. I lived in my former house for several years and felt overwhelmed by the accumulated stuff. With a clean slate I buy intentionally. When I got settled, I spent about $500 on new clothes that fit the style I'd grown into (basically black leggings and black turtlenecks daily!) I've only work black for years and hadn't bought clothes in the past 2 years. Having a monochromatic "uniform" makes me happy 😊 A lot less time spent thinking about what to wear.

This video is so inspiring! I am definitely going to do this! I think the key when it comes to translating this challenge into action is to not see it as privation but more as a freedom. The freedom of choosing what to spend your money on and also on freeing yourself from clutter to have more energy to focus on things that matter to you like creativity, projects and things that actually make you happy. I think this is such a powerful habit

I always budget everything in the beginning of a month and pay myself first (investments, savings etc.). I have x amount for groceries, eating out/coffee (more like takeaway) and hobbies in a month. This way I have to think every purchase carefully and rarely I buy something I don't need (or can't retun). In the past 9 months I have been able to triple my networth (which is super exciting and rewarding). I don't feel I have missed out on anything, I do buy stuff for need and I don't need to worry about money. :)

This was really an awesome topic Sophie! You did a very very good job in presenting it! We are waiting a week to purchase things that we believe we need. When you said retail therapy and paying for something to just sit in your home, that struck a cord with me. When I was younger, having things (mostly video games) were the thing that have me that dopamine hit. But nowadays I'm just trying to get rid of as much unnecessary things as I can. As you said, you're paying for something to live in your house. I can also relate to how boredom can make us impulsively buy things, for nothing more than entertainment, that can also go with food too. Well, hopefully you won't unsubscribe because I'm not a fashion blogger and won't sell you anything 😂😂. Also, I need to reevaluate my spending in the new married life. I started my low buy lifestyle when my son didn't file his FAFSA for college and I was going to have to pay his full tuition. I stopped buying clothes, fancy coffees, and other things we didn't need. I also cooked at home as much as possible. Now he has a full tuition PELL Grant and we don't have to scrimp and save, but like you, we've realized that we don't need so many things to be happy. I've enjoyed more hiking, using the library, and being creative with the things I have. I've also started down the minimalism path, which is how I found your channel. I’m definitely moving into a low buy year (except for plants lol as it was what I wanted to limit myself). I’ve even moved myself into a low buy year by changing my hours at work to save money on petrol and food, as I buy a lot of food with clients during the day as a lot of my hours are on the road. So moving into overnight shifts will literally save me I’m certain over $100 weekly which is crazy because I’m so strict in other areas of my life. Thanks for the inspiration. We need to finish up our kitchen renos (cosmetic) & continue my new garden etc., low buy can definitely help me achieve this for sure x

You've inspired me to do a low buy month or longer again, I spend way too much money on things I don't need. Started today with an inventory of what is in my closet for fall season, making combinations with what I already own instead of running to the store for the newest thing. I also tried on a dress and t-shirt today, but ended up not buying them whereas before I definitely would have. Now I thought, I have so many already, I want to be happy with what I have first and 'shop my own closet'.
