We load a Tipper Truck and a Train with 19 wagons to their capacity in the Aggregate Industries Isle of Grain distribution site and race back to the Ashville yard in West Drayton to offload.
Clearly, this is not a Drag Race and is not just about speed. The 80 mile race goes through the night and ends in the early hours of the morning.

Brilliant comment, perhaps even more so than you realise. The issue here is that Dan does the video himself with his own in house editor/team. TV would take Dan's story, and edit the shit out of it, leave us asking many questions, also showing us the same same footage over and over again to drive suspense. This guys makes a 20 minute documentary with 20 minutes of video, if this was a TV production it would be 12minutes of actual video footage. Also, Dan and his editor/team know their industry, not some TV production team and editors who always seem to show the wrong bits, it is almost like they don't understand their audiences. I watch things like Gold Rush and Big Timber, the camera crew on Big Timber are shocking, they are always zoomed in too far so you cannot get context or a proper view of what is going on!

To be fair, Top Gear looked at passenger transport (they mostly ignore freight). In one case (the long haul from London to Edinburgh) they raced a steam train against a car and a motorcycle (and those were models from 1949 to make it "fair" to the steam train). The car won that one by a bare 10 minutes in front of the train, but they ignored the fact that the car was a two-seater and the motorcycle even just a one-seater, while the train was, well, a train, with hundreds of seats. In the other race, across London, they had car/bicycle/boat,/public transit and funny enough the bicycle won that one. To make the train win this race however the distance should have been a bit further, because (as is being mentioned) resting times for the truck would wreak havoc with its better times compared to the train, as would having to drive at different times of the day. But I also like the points being made, volume and fuel consumption make the train the winner anyway, because just one of these trains has to be compared to 75 trips with the tipper, and given that the tipper uses six times as much fuel as the train, the difference really gets ridiculous.

I can tell you now, if GBRf swapped the 66 for that Electro-diesel* Class 73 - they'd be mad lads to do so, it would be a stupid move, but us enthusiasts would be dead happy with the change! The advantage with that facility being on the rail network is that trains with ballast can go directly into rail project sites where rails have been laid and then they use machines to lay out the ballast at the sites so the distance the machines need to travel can be reduced significantly depending on the site location! Of course it also allows for more ballast to be transported to the sites in single trips! :)

Nice one Dan, it puts things into perspective, The protest groups etc will say how much fuel trains burn and how that’s not good for the planet, but actually the alternative option is far worse. Using the train enables less lorries travelling large distances burning fuel, it keeps costs down for the consumer, it keeps the construction industry moving and is gentler on the planet. With the trains being upgraded to electric, this again will reduce the carbon emissions (whether electric is the answer is another story) either way it shows that the construction industry is leading when it comes to reducing its carbon footprint. Very educational yet fun to watch 👍
