I live in Wollongong near Sydney and Canva is my dream company to work for. I am learning programming via self taught and BootCamp at the moment but already applied for Canva internship as a software engineer. Hi Hamza, thanks so much for your kind words, your comment actually made me so happy! ❤️ As an advice I'd say: take time to explore what it is you love about software engineering and CS and then spend time getting better at it and understanding it deeply. You can always switch specialities but once you master one it's actually quite easy to translate this into other fields. Just have fun with it! And start interviewing at FAANG as soon as possible even if you don't feel ready! You will get an experience and understand how to prepare better for the next year (and they don't mind if you applied once or 5 times before!) Keeping my fingers crossed for you! 🤞🙏

@@danielah.1009 First of all - it's never too late so don't worry about that 😁 If the goal is to get a job abroad work it out backwards - what do you need do learn/do to be able to apply with a high success chance. Then for each thing you need to do split it into smallest possible tasks and estimate how long each should take. Ideally the tasks are so small that none of them takes longer than 3 days. Then you can see when approximately you'll be ready. This will help you to not get overwhelmed, not jump between different contexts but focus on the path you already drawn for yourself and also be able to check if you're on track. Also don't beat yourself up if you're off track - just identify why that is (wrong estimation in the first place? Unexpected circumstances? Lack of motivation?) and learn from it for the future 😊 If you want to chat about your specific situation hit me up on Discord or IG :)

How important do you think it is for developer to understand the devops side of thing? And how much is enough for a dev? Love your videos btw, so helpful and detailed, great job :)
Thanks! 😊 About devops, it depends what kind of software engineering / developing you wanna do. I'd assume based on your question that you are talking about someone who mostly just works on a product, writing code for FE, BE, data etc. I'd say it's important to understand version controls systems, release pipelines etc. But then the details can be learned while at a specific job :)

Hello I am currently studying at the and i'm a first year at the University of Sydney studying Bachelor of Advanced Computing. I was wondering in order to get an internship or a graduate software developer role at Canva, do you need extremely high WAM scores such as a distinction or high distinction? Because I was looking at the basic requirements and it states that, you need a distinction average in order to apply for an internship role. Could I possibly get in with a credit or below average? How heavily is WAM scores considered when applying to these software developing companies such as Canva? -Thanks in advance
Hey Joshua, good question! I asked Canva’s internship recruitment team and they said that we do not require Distinction WAM to get an internship at Canva. We do look at transcripts + other factors on candidate’s CV (other internships if any, hackathons, competitions, projects, tutoring experience, volunteering etc). Distinction WAM or higher is still a good advantage but we've hired interns and grads with credit averages. I’m not sure about other companies atm but when I was applying/getting internships at Microsoft and Google they didn’t even look at my transcript 😅 Performance and communication in the actual interview was the most important factor in getting the internship.

@@KaroCodesthanks! Were you a mid before this or just became a mid when you joined Canva? And now that you are a tech lead, did you have to be at a senior level for a particular number of years before you could do that? Just wanted to understand how many years of experience is required at each stage to get to where you are now. Thank you!
@@kidkwlify tbh I don't pay that much attention to titles as for example 'senior' in one company can mean something completely else in another! I know some grads with 1y experience that hold the 'principal SE' title 🥲 I was actually working as a senior Android eng before I joined Canva. When I joined I wasn't told what my level would be, just a total comp package and responsibilities scope 🤷♀️ Start-ups usually don't have a strict hierarchy. I only learned about my ladder placement later on when Canva was trying to figure it out itself. I started leading a team around a year after doing a real senior IC work. I'd say that it all depends on you, your independence, skills and knowledge of the domain. If you have a good track record of delivering projects on time with minimal guidance from more senior engineers you are probably on the right path to a managerial position. People usually become tech leads before leading a team which is a good experience to learn how to influence and lead people without a formal title ;) + the faster the company is growing the more opportunities there would be 😏
