I wish people would explain when and how they started drinking and how it escalated. Young people think social drinking is a huge joke, and it simply isn't. My heart goes out to this man who is struggling to remain sober.

Drinking socially ain’t the issue, drinking to numb your feelings is the issue! My father only drank a beer or 2 at most when out with mom and friends. We had drinks at home for guests, but I don’t have a single memory of him drinking at home… His older brother on the other hand… He drank SO much, he died of liver cirroris… and lung damage from the chain smoking… Nobody else in the family drank or smoked like that… He lost his mom when he was little and never overcame that it seems. Don’t blame the tools of destruction, blame the hand that yields them!

Dr. Delony is spot on. Brother, I don't know if you'll see this, but you are my dad back in the 90s. He was a functional alcoholic and fairly successful career-wise. He lost his battle with alcoholism last October. BUT, he did stop at 44 or 45 for twenty years and it changed our lives. It made a huge difference in both our family and his business. You deserve to live in reality. And you deserve to be sober. Put a calendar on the wall and start marking the days of sobriety. And if you need a support group, they are out there.

I've been an alcoholic for over 25 years. I was on and off the wagon so many times that my body physically hurt. I had terrible anxiety and depression, I dreaded going to sleep because it meant I would wake up and need to drink. I didn't want to drink but my body needed it to function. I even put myself in a 90day inhouse rehab program and it worked for 8 months then I was back on and off the wagon again. This lasted for another 7 years until I found Jesus Christ. Jesus saved my life. He took away all the anxiety and depression and gave me peace. Today I have 1year and 3 months Alcohol free. I feel amazing and thank God every day for taking the cravings away. I'm thankful for my new peaceful and healthier life. One day at a time. (If you don't believe in God, rehab programs and AA meetings work if you do the work) God Bless.

This spoke to me the pain and suffering in his voice I can relate. I just had a series of relapses in the last few years and it’s been a living hell being a lesser version of who I know I am in recovery after 6 years sober.

You're not any lesser for falling, remember that. We may become weaker sometimes, life can get more difficult at times putting a lot of weight on out back and making us fall, but that doesn't make you worse. Just keep treading along.

My girlfriends dad began drinking when he was real young. Her mom basically gave him an ultimatum, quit drinking or she's leaving him. And he chose drinking so she left. He recently had a stroke, and was told he's gotta stop drinking and smoking. He's cut back on the smoking, but is STILL drinking. Addiction is a very powerful thing, and it's amazing how what might be unbelievably addicting to you might not phase me, but what I find insanely addicting you might be able to shrug off. That's life I guess. We don't know what's going on chemically with most people, so best to just hope they can get it sorted. Maybe in the future we'll have a much better understanding on how to help people.

Struggling with this myself. This guy is making progress! Saw a motivational video that said we start fighting a bear with a stick and its tough but it gets easier, we gain skills and cheerleaders and we start battling dragons with a nuclear bomb and six nations (Alex Hormozi)

There is hope on the other side, brother. I’m on Naltrexone for alcohol use disorder and have been in recovery for 5 years. I was on the path to an early death and now I’m pretty much “normal”. I was so ashamed, but we all have serious freaking problems. The shameful part is lying and hiding; the beautiful thing is to have an AUD and to love yourself enough to be vulnerable to a doctor and to get help.

The community, families, schools, churches need to teach children at an early age that "alcohol is a poison" that can cause permanent brain damage (Wernicke-Korsakoff) organ failure and death. Including a multitude of other damages. Alcohol is multi-billion dollar industry. 💰
