I get it, you guys don't like the relic work, no matter the reason. I don't think my Dad likes it either. I'll strip it and refinish it, thanks for your constructive criticism.
I liked it. I wouldnt worry to much about what anyone else thinks. My philosophy, do what you love and dont explain yourself to anyone :) Until someone has deserved it, their opinion has no value :)
I'm very much like your Dad and hate "relic'd" guitars. This was done tastefully and turned out pretty decent. That is a fantastic sounding guitar and was meant to be played and played a LOT! God bless and rock on 👍😎🎸
Love the interaction you have with your dad, I really like the video where both you & your dad play each others guitars & give feedback on them 👍. All the best from Scotland 🏴
Haha - When I saw this and read the title - I cringed. I could only imagine growing up with your father how he was going to react. If I had a dollar for every lecture I got from him, when we were playing in bands, about how I treated (or mistreated) my equipment. It seems like he has settled down a bit, and a little more accepting :) Your fathers a good guy, he had more influence on the music I listened to and played then anyone. And, of course, he taught me how to play guitar, so he started me on this journey. Good to see you both on here.
I feel like I've pushed him a little more into lax territory and he's mellowed quite a bit with age. Now when are you going to bring ol' paint by for some TLC and a video?
@@LucasFowler I hate to say this, but I think Ol paint got tossed out. There is a chance I stored it away with my old 82 Ibanez Artist (AR50). I will have to check and see if I still have it.
This is definitely a “Thanks; I hate it,” scenario. On one hand, nicely done. On the other, I’m not a fan of relic jobs. It hurts a little bit to watch people damage things on purpose. Especially guitars I can’t afford, lol…
The whole thing about 'not worrying about it now' is a thing. My second cheapest guitar ($179) is gorgeous and I am sure I play it less because since it has sentimental value I don't want to ding it up.
It’s hard to get past that 1st or 2nd imperfection. But then it starts to look cool again. Like an old pair of sneakers. Worn in. IMO you didn’t distress it enough. When I see my fav VH axe, that white distressed one he played that they don’t sell, that looks distressed and cool from a distance. I can’t see enough of that with what you did until I’m up close to it. I also love those old beat up looking telecasters. Guys take torches to those on purpose, which is weird, but they look cool. Just my opinion. Interesting video.
It had a faint pulse before that final checking. At the start, he asked "would you take a hammer to your guitar?". I ask..Who takes a razor blade to their guitar from end to end? Oh well, when you gotta go, you gotta go. RIP guitar!!
Great vid, looks like it was fun! I kinda felt the same way when I took took the first bite out of my 2016 Gibson SG Special. After that, I was like "Okay, it's on" and I've made no attempt to protect it from little knocks. After several years, I've gotten some buckle rash on it, i've taken a few dings out of the side, and I've worn a glossy spot into the satin finish where I put my arm... I haven't tried anything deliberate, but I've tried to age it naturally without any concern for looks. Honestly... It looks even better now, IMO.
I feel weird walking around in bright clean sneakers too, I feel like I need to avoid stepping in the grass or puddles or whatever. I'm always more comfortable once their worn in.
Lucas I love ya.. but man I just can’t do that to a guitar. If you want it redone ship it to me I would gladly put it back to its original glory!😂 Not that you couldn’t do it!
I would say I follow that rule for the distressing, however the "aging" I sometimes remove things so I can more easily dull the finish down. That's the right train of thought though!
You know you have a good Dad when you show him your work and he simply comments on the factual information about what you have done, but issues zero opinions about it. That's how you know you were raised right LOL!
@@LucasFowler Fuel for the tinkering fires, indeed. Also...every time I hear your band's music, I am perplexed as to how on this green earth, in the year of our lord, you are not on a yacht in the tropics throwing money in the air. You are very talented sir. I'll say it, even if our Dads are afraid to 🤣
I accidentally distressed my Les Paul special that I've had for over 20 years. My wife was NOT impressed, and I have to live with it, so if you're not sure - DON'T, if you can avoid it. In time, I'll learn to love it again, but it may take another 20 years. By then it'll be vintage so nobody will be the wiser.
I think if the aging is real and a product of time and use then it's fine, when you take your time to damage a guitar it's just stupid shit man. Even your dad looks a bit disappointed dude.
@@LucasFowler Sorry for being rude, to go around "trying new things" and damaging thousand of dollars in the process, Im not from the USA, if you knew how hard some people have to work in other countries just to afford 1 medium tier guitar. It feels like a spit in my face bruh.
You’re making a lot of assumptions about how hard I worked for things. I was raised in a working class family and I am still in the working class. I work 3 separate jobs and I create content for RU-vid and I take care of two children. And for the record, I got that guitar 10 years ago from a music store that I worked in, at a steep discount because I was a 40 hour work week employee making $12 an hour. I paid $300 for it and that was almost my whole 2 week paycheck. I’ve been pursuing guitar and music as a career for 20 years, this isn’t something that just happened overnight on a whim. Furthermore, the whole point of this was to try and help my Dad with his fixation on his mistake by taking the burden off him. It feels like a spit in the face because you’re taking something that wasn’t for or about you personally. There are some glamorous parts of the US but I assure you, the poor rural area where I am from is not it.
Sorry again, thats not what one might imply from the video, in my constructive criticism maybe restoration is a better way to spend some creative time imo
Why not just keep playing the guitar as it was and consider that spot at the tail of the guitar the first character mark, instead of copying other peoples wear and accidents. This makes no sense. Sigh!
