The textures look fantastic, but the removal of the bloom actually bothers me a bit. I never thought of it as being an issue. If you mixed the high quality textures with the bloom and native lighting, I feel as though I would like that more.

I think this would look even better with MK8/Tour character models. The only thing I don’t like is that the characters don’t shine nearly as much now.

the characters would have to be downscaled significattly the models have a Poly count max, that you cant exceed.

i dont like the bloom in mkwii because its wayyyy too strong, but turning it off altogether makes you notice how flat the shading is. There's barely any vertex lighting and the lack of pre-baked ambient occlusion makes most sections of a track have the exact same flat light level with no contrast

Yeah, sort of looks like a PSP game with the lighting and bloom switched off. Very flat.

While your claim is opinionated, your reasoning is false. The reason why the characters look so flat in this version is not because of bloom removal, it’s because of the removal of the intense sheen on the characters. The bloom effect itself only blurs pixels of a certain brightness NOT Shade or highlight the characters. I prefer the more intense specular highlights in the original because it gives the game more dimension ^^.

I think they used a lot of bloom to mask the poor texture work in the original game, so without it it looks a little flat. Though I agree there was too much. This looks great, but comes out a little grainy (though I accept it might just be what we're used to)

I want to mention that as of 5.0-18238, the Dolphin Emulator user folder is no longer in the Documents folder by default for Windows, though Dolphin will continue to use it from there if it is found. The best way to find it now is in the menu bar (File > Open User Folder). This also makes finding the user folder easy for users on Mac and Linux.

To me it more similar model from Double Dash even Nintendo Wii is update or refresh of Nintendo GameCube, but some of stuff came from Mario Kart DS

ngl I’m a sucker for the bloom. It gives the game such a specific and iconic look. There’s something to be said about stylization and a game reflecting the era it was made in.

My critique of this is, in terms of lighting, It looks worse than the original (specifically talking about the roads and the characters). The bloom and shine effects are gone and it feels like the game suffered a downgrade in the lighting department. The textures do look cool tho. But still, this is no remaster, I still prefer the original look just because of the lighting. I'd like to see some shader work on this too, perhaps a hi-res bloom effect and Global Illumination could do something with what's currently missing.

Shader work isn't possible yet afaik i'd love to add hi res bloom and GI but we don't have the proper tools to change the game that deeply. Maybe i could do it if i knew how to hex edit the game like mrbeam does lol

I think the characters look better with their glossy finishes mixed with this upgraded environment. These upgraded character textures look a bit dark and don’t stand out well from the background. It seems as if lighting doesn’t affect them so they’re always dark.

I love this but I feel like the bloom was part of the art style of this game. I get that a lot of you didn't like the bloom but I think it's gives MKWii its own unique look. It adds to the nostalgia for me

I've always found that Double Dash looks surprisingly well natively compared to MKWii's original presentation. The bloom effect was a definite detractor.

Personally I think this makes the game look significantly worse, the textures look flatter and bloom really helps to hide the lack of shadows that is now exposed

Saw this on Tetra’s server and I must say that this looks very, very cool. Also pretty nostalgic considering MK Wii is my most played MK game in general :3 Bravo! 👏

This is amazing! Ironically it makes MKWii closer to the look of Mario Kart Double Dash, even if it's in 1080p. I always thought that MKDD actually looks better than MKWii, which is a bit sad in my opinion. In the end this looks like a mix between MKDD and MK7, which is impressive! Good work!

I like it a lot, in my opinion I thought it looked more like a remaster without the textures. With the textures it feels more like the game originated on the Gamecube or I'm watching footage of MKDD, something like an HD downgrade so to speak. It's not bad, it's kinda like a lateral move the way I see it. Keep up the great work

I don't think the textures are the issue, it's the lighting effects. Though the bloom was definitely overdone in the original, it just looks flat and dark without it. I think a true remaster would need an overhaul to the game's lighting.

sadly i prefer the original look, i think its obvious why nintendo added all the bloom and flare. the game is a polygon mess and without all that bloom and stuff the game looks like it has ds characters and feels empty

Those textures are amazing dude, when you said "What game should I remaster next?" I thought ahhhh, that explains it, he has experience with upscaling textures. I would love to add this on my emulator, it's so much crisper and yet still so true to the original. Awesome 😎

He didn't make the texture pack. He just applied somebody else's to Dolphin emulator and uploaded their texture pack to his website while taking the credit for it.

i really really love this! always thought a more double dash style would look WAY better. i'm not the biggest fan of the character texture, and it does emphasize the lackluster lighting but world textures are just gorgeous.

Super cool mods! I like the vibrancy of the maps, and the bloom definitely desaturated the colors a lot. Looks good without it. That said, I think two things could make this stand out even more. One, the characters look kinda dark without any scene light (the bloom was the original solution to this). Two, the lighting on the characters would be great if they weren’t greyscale. You can sorta see how every character has only black/grey shading, whereas colored shading, depending on the map, could significantly enhance the look of the characters. Just my take. Thanks for sharing!

I remember as a little kid coming from an Xbox 360 when I got my first Wii I was surprised how bad the graphics were. I thought the Wii is going to have some mind blowing graphics but the reality was this low resolution mid graphics paired with that weird bloom which looked awful. However I was greatly surprised by the fidelity of the Wii U finally supporting HD graphics.

Hey man, I know this will get overlooked, but maybe you should try Reshade. You removed some effects because of their look (bloom) but you can add and personalize Bloom with Reshade (and many other effects). You should really take a look!

This looks amazing! Imagine Nintendo made a 3D All-Stars version of Mario Kart games for the Switch, or you do it before them. Like MKDD, MKWII, MK7. As far as remastering other games, I would think a Wii Sports Resort could use it, along with giving Wii Miis the features of Switch Miis.

Impressive effort but I feel the remaster now looks flatter with the removal of many of the lighting effects. The course design is readable enough such that the bloom isn’t an issue imo
