Thermals are wayyy better though. I was going buy lg gram 16 but fancy editing a bit in 4k or Full HD. 16gb 16 MacBook or 32gb Lg gram wonder what's better for video editing etc
Better thermals and better fan on the 16". The 16" barely has the fans to come on as supposed to the 14", especially under heavy load like video rendering or gaming. The fans just come on so often on the 14".
Great video. In store the 16" looks massive compared to the 14" even though the specs are identical. I always use a wireless keyboard and mouse when I am not connected to my edit bay to avoid the trackpad issue. I want my workflow to stay identical wherever I edit. I usually pack a collapsable mac stand to have the MBP at eye level.
I watched this video before getting a 14" and felt EXACTLY the same before AND after and it's hard to believe because I was so dead set. Coming back to say thanks I should have listened lol.
Pretty much the reasons i was going instantly for the 16" (as well because of the sound), the 14" looked already in the shop like a bigger netbook and i hated since ever the thin speaker grills, the 15 and 16" models always looked (and sounded) better. But battery and screen size were the main reasons for 16". I even got away with the base model 16/512, with a Sabrent TB4 external drive its basically as fast as the internal SSD. I have mostly between 200-300GB free space on the internal SSD and this is enough for shorter videos as well, for bigger stuff i need the 2TB sabrent drive which is also handy with about 2500-2700MB/s. Also, since i have to share sometimes hundreds of GB astrophotography data with a windows Desktop to stack/process with my preffered program (Deep Sky Stacker, Windows exclusive) i have to rely anyways very much on external drives.
Absolutely! If you don’t need the portability of the 14, the 16” is a no brainer. Plus the fans are massive on the 16 which results in less fan noise, critical for recording audio.
I would argue that the 16 inch is not too heavy. It is very well balanced which makes a big difference when carrying. I love mine and I take it out into the wild a lot.
@@xstoofpeerThe problem for me with a desktop computer (even the 24 inch imac M1) is that you have to raise your head to look at the screen and therefore you look above the eye line, whereas with a laptop we look down a bit like we do when reading a book.
This video summed up exactly how I felt about the 14 vs 16. I went with the 16 because I wanted the laptop to actually be a laptop and it is a side to my main windows desktop. But I want the ability to edit on the laptop or just use it on the couch or just not be forced to sit at the desk. I can use my laptop laying down. But I can’t lay down and use my desktop lol. I was going to order the 512 gig and do the same thing as you with a 2tb nvme USB C external enclosure. But then I changed my mind and actually got the one terabyte because if I install a bunch of applications I know I will have at least 300 gigs free on the internal. Then if I record a lot on a weekend trip. I can just use that internal drive to hold 300 gigs of projects it’s enough.
I want to get a MacBook Pro w/ M1 MAX 10/32 core chipset, 32Gb RAM, and 1Tb SSD. Plan on doing photography editing, videography editing when I get a motorcycle, and school work as well as my ground school lessons to get my pilots license. I am only 16, so getting a $3,099 + tax laptop is a BIG decision.. My question is, if I edit videos that may be around 100Gb on average, then once my memory fills up, can I delete those video edits and just restart with let’s say a new months of work?
@@swiift2k538 A fortnite kiddie with 16 years young, literally fresh from the soup is getting a M1 Max, ouch. Oh wait, if anything of that "pilots license" thing is real your parents are anyways rich af get a maxxed out M2 Max
That's a great decision! You chose the one that would be more beneficial with your lifestyle and line of work. This video will definitely help people who are struggling to decide which one to pick! 😅
Love my 16" M1 Max but for what my day job (lots of different locations, 4 wheel office) it is just too big. Ended up keeping it as my in home computer and added the M2 13 Air, with which I am totally impressed. Best of both worlds set up.
the reasons why am sticking to my 16 inch are THE SPEAKERS AND THE BATTERY . the battery of the 16 inch is RIDICULOUSLY GOOD ! I top up the battery every morning , spend the entire day in office on battery and finish a day of work with 60-65% battery left ! That's insane !
@@ttg889 Who said because you use a feature you use it also in the office? I also love the speakers and battery of the 16", its amazing. Doesn´t mean i blast them when im in the lecture hall but the amazing battery life helps a lot at long studying days without even thinking about charging.
Just canceled my order because/thanks to you... i am huge trackpad fan, it's a big part of my workflow as a music producer, i have even bought the magic trackpad to get the same feeling...
I just ordered a 16" max with 64gb ram and 32 gpu with 2 tb storage. My situation is different. It's replacing my 27" iMac and will be my main machine for video/photo editing and will live on my office desk connected to a monitor most of the time. Probably still overkill but I keep my computers for 7-8yrs and I feel it will be future proof for me. Also I shoot with a Canon r5 and have never touched 8k that it's capable but maybe in years to come that will be a thing so...
@@JordanPulmano it is great when you are in the go to have more screen real estate if you can’t connect to a dedicated monitor. I’m still mad I got the smaller iPad Pro lol

@@bayareafactorbaby8913 Depends on whether you use Davinci Resolve or Final Cut Pro, or Premiere Pro. Premiere Pro is not as fast as the other two. I think 4K video with LUTs is just fine for a few layers of video, but not for too much. If editing heavily on 4K footage, I'd recommend waiting for the Max, it'll be worth it then.
Great decision. As a student and no video editing work flow, I decide to pick base model that with 512 gb is enough for me. And since portability is not an issue, then why not bigger screen real estate~
only reason id give up my 14 inch is for the battery life that the 16 gets. still In the return window and I am going back and forth between the idea of doing so but damn I just love the size of the 14.
I think if you truly enjoy the size of the 14, then the battery life may not be a big enough change to make it worth it! The 14 still has amazing battery life. Great to hear that it is working out for you!
Finally broke down and got one with Best Buys deal right now and also opted for the extra tb for $200. I know external can be had for half that but it is nice upfront to have the wiggle room. I edit in 1080 and convert so im not worried about 32gb or Max. My OG m1 mini does fine in braw 6k converted. Also, bought this bad boy with credit card points,.
How come you went with the m1 pro ? Is that enough for you in terms of productivity ? If you decide to upgrade your m1 Pro to 32 gb ram and 1 TB then you will almost spend just as much as you would spend on m1 max
It’s legit like this 😂. I got the 16 thought oh man I made a mistake. Returned it. Got 14. Week later returned went back to 16. Dumbest time of my life. I still have that thought in the back of my head like do I want a 14 again next generation? Shit no idk Ehhhh I can’t believe I still think that.
@@breezefps yes no questions asked 14 days return policy. I personally don’t have an Apple Store nearby so I order online and return can be done via FedEx. Though if you have one near you can use that store for both buying/ordering and returns even from online order. You can in fact on the 14th day initiate a return at 11:59pm on your account and then have 14 more days to drop it at FedEx or cancel the return. Very nice for those times you may not be sure about your purchase as this is a shit ton of money.
As a general reply when the M2 came out I did it again 😂 14” silver to 16” silver to 16” space grey to 14” silver to 16” space grey and kept it. Literally felt like I was having a god damn brain stroke.
@@frostgodx THATS SO COOL! So I can just go to a apple store and say “Hey, I decided to switch for the 14’ instead of the 16’ macbook, can you guys switch for me? And they will give the difference amount of cash of the 14’ to 16’?
I am curious how much your main PC cost so we can compare your PC monster to a similar spec 16 inch M1. I suspect that a 16 inch m1 max plus a Studio display is cheaper that two full systems.
The one thing I don't like about the 16" is actually funny enough the trackpad. Because of the large size I notice the palms of my hands are on the trackpad when I'm writing I wish they would make a 15" just to get the weight and size a bit down. But as usual for me what I really would want is never an option 😂. So the best compromise has to be the 14"
I agree. Bought 16” last year, I travel a lot and work remote. My work flow at work needs 4 different chrome tabs open which means the change from 14 to 16 was a game changer. Also during the summer I travel a lot and also work and the 500 nit to 1000 mit difference made a lot of difference when working at the beach. Sometimes it does get annoying the lack of portability but there’s always a inverse relation between portability vs productivity. I think the best set up for me is just the mac with a case not cover or pouch, and no mouse or track pad
Glad to hear you are liking the 16! 2 years later and I’m still happy with my decision. I’m currently flying 4 times a week and it’s been great having the larger size to work on flights
Need help choosing between the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro with M1 Pro 10-core CPU (same price). Hi everyone, I'm a computer science student looking for a new laptop. I'm torn between the two models: the MacBook Pro 16-inch and the MacBook Pro 14-inch. Both laptops share the same specs: 1 TB storage and 16 GB RAM. The only difference is the screen size and portability. The price difference is negligible (the 16-inch is $22.73 cheaper). I mainly use my laptop for coding, web browsing, and entertainment. I don't care much about battery life since I always have access to power outlets. However, I do travel a lot between my hometown and the university town (twice a week, two hours by bus each way), and I also commute by bus to the university every weekday (20-30 minutes each way). I'm not sure if I should use my laptop on the bus or not because I'm afraid it might get damaged or stolen. Is this a reasonable concern? So, which one would you recommend? The 14-inch or the 16-inch? I appreciate any advice or feedback. Thanks!
Maybe for content creators or software developers, the 16-inch is a better fit. I think for anyone else 14-inch is the perfect laptop. It's so portable and yet powerful.
@@extremelucky1 yeah I can definitely see that.. my biggest compromise was the size when it comes to portability.. apple hasn’t sent my trade in kit and I’m still contemplating if keeping the air is worth the giving back the $440 credit they gave me.. but since I have the 12.9 iPad Pro it’s not like I don’t have a portable solution
Great video and probably just the one that could help me decide! I bought both, the 14 and 16 ( base model of each ) and cannot decide which to keep. I have noticed that the 16" runs a tad bit warmer ( mid 40s C vs low 40s on the 14" ) and wondering if that is indeed normal. Been watching a lot of videos and reading on MR ( MacRumors ) and the general consensus appears to favor the 16" over the 14", especially in terms of operating temps!
@@Ku6epIIe4eHe7Kept the 16". The larger screen, longer battery per charge, and better speakers had me opt for it. No regrets at all! That said, the current sale ( Costco, Best Buy etc ) on the 14" ($1599) is a steal of a buy!!
@@M5_Sonu picked up the base 16" for 2100 on best buy, amazing deal. Also the thermals are slightly hotter on the 16" in the start because fans don't ramp up on the 16" as early as the 14", but at peak performance 16" runs a lot cooler. Max tech has a bunch of videos on these.
Hi bro, Working with the silver one outside, with the son, do you notice some type of lack of focus because of the britghness of the chasis, because sun reflects more in the silver one? What about that? I like both??
Hey! I haven’t really noticed anything like that. In very bright conditions it can be more difficult to see the screen like anything, but the Liquid Retina is brighter than my old laptop and definitely makes it easier.
Im mostly at home, and dont travel a lot. And will often be connected to a monitor. BUT i want to move around in my apartment as well. On the couch for example. And when i am other places than my home. I still want to be able to make music and video edit. And im scared that the 14" maybe just will feel to little to do that. The 14" inch is the nicest laptop. Great video. Sums up why I will buy the 16-inch. I got curious: Do the resting palm/s on the big trackpad not accidentally trigger anything, when one is typing? 😊 (EDIT: I have a 2014 15-inch MBP. It has a much smaller trackpad and neither of my palm is on it when I type. ☺)
Ive always gotten the 13 inch because I am a computer Science major. I wanted something portable. But recently when the new pros came out I got the 14 and then a couple days later decided to get the 16 also. At first the 16 was very big but I got use to it. Now I am having issues deciding. I like both computers for different reasons... ugh
im going to start my Computer Science bachelor after the summer and am trying to decide wether to get the 14" or the 16" model. For programming the 16" might be better because of the bigger screen size, so you can see more lines of code, I also like the bigger battery on the 16". The 14" is just easier to carry around. Still trying to make a decision....
@@zakaria1656 TLDR; If you will be working mostly with bigger screens, get the 14" for mobility. Otherwise get the bigger screen. I know I have commented on something else here but I am a programmer for about 12 years with various experience in working on different laptop sizes. I'd say if you will only be working on the laptop, exclusively, then get the 16" model since it is more real estate and less "alt + tab" all the time which is really can get annoying for the work flow. you can see more lines of code if you of course choose a smaller font but for the long run its not so comfortable. I work with a 14" thinkpad and I only chose this one because at work I have two 24" monitors this laptop is connected to at the office. When I am at home and without any extrnal screens its okay to work on this one for the day, but if it was like this for the entirety of college it would get me crazy. Good luck bud

You can do this coz you are lucky you have this return option from Apple in your country. Thay is why you can do these experiments. You can waste as many units as you can, in the name of impulse buy mistake, size issue etc..
For someone who have dozens of chrome tabs open, watching twitch streams, video editing, and maybe 1-2 more resource intensive app all open simultaneously, do you think 16gb would work or better to go for 32?
The benefits of editing video on the internal SSD is unnoticeable over external SSDs, which is easily 10 to 50 times the playback speed of most 4K video. The bottleneck is processing power and RAM.
NO! Be aware, if you talk about fast (in long term when writing 50GB+ continous) SSDs and a TB3/4 SSD enclosure, YES! But i have also 2 slower USB 3.1 enclosures (m.2!) which throttle intentional to avoid overheating, they throttle to 60MB/s down after 30-40GB written (with 700-800MB/s)
Also, what are you talking about? the processed prores 4-2-2 (HQ) data in the background are VERY space demanding, a 1GB video clip from my EOS R7 become within just a little color grading a 5-15GB project file!, so you have to write easily 5x and more data on the external SSD than your original videos size! As said... my cheaper m.2 enclosures and SSDs are pretty unusable above about 50GB (project size)... so at best a 5-10GB video is fast enough imported/ready for fast editing/export. Considering modern 4k60 files etc easily eats up 5-10 GB in minutes, well not every mediocre fast SSD or enclousure is fast enough. But you are right when you exclude a lot of cheaper SSDs and enclosures and see only TB3/4, especially the Sabrent drives/enclosures existence which are AWESOME (M1 Pro base model 512 GB "only" + 2TB sabrent drive is an amazing combo for sharing much data with other computers without paying too much apple premium)
Most 4K - 8K vidéos are 100 - 720 mbps, which max out at 90 MB/s. When editing there’s no speed/time difference whether the original files are on external disks or internal. Current SSD r/w at 550-2000 MB/s. CPU/GPU is the bottle neck. H.265 would save a lot of space. Newer SSD like Sandisk pro blade offers r/w 3000 MB/s with 16TB storage. Even editing 12 K footage whose data bit rate could be 1800 mbps or so, which is about 250 MB/s. The external SSDs are mostly an overkill. Importing to internal ssd is only a waste of time.
Let’s say you have a 50 second footage whose file size is 50 GB. And your internal SSD r/w 5000 MB/s, external SSD r/w 1000 MB/s. If SSD r/w speed matters, the rendering /export of the said footage should be about 1 second internally or 5 seconds externally. But if you try rendering off an internal SSD, it would take as much time as off an external SSD. The simplified conclusion is that when we could render a footage at 30X speed, that’s when we gain benefits processing footage on an internal SSD.
@@joyKafka again: MANY (!!!) SSDs and enclosures throttle the speed dramatically as one of my SSDs which throttle down to 60MB/s (basically 2x as fast as USB 2.0!) At this speed you notice a heavy performance drop (60MB/s vs 2000+…)

A month ago I commented about how you saved me. I always wondered if I made the wrong choice doing the 16. The M2 came out and I got a 14” yesterday on release and I fucked up…😂 It’s going back and I’m going back to the 16” god damnit. I can deal with all the “worse” things on the 14 but no matter what the flow just isn’t there for the screen. It’s worth using a bigger heavier machine no matter the case unless you travel via plane a lot. No way around it just being straight up the best. I hate the weight, the size, and feel, the shape but my god it’s the best damn laptop on the market hands down and the king of the jungle. Honestly docked at my desk being used as an additional display the 14” can’t compete, on the table, on my lap on the couch, anywhere that I am the 16 is just so much better performing where it matters. I was using my 14” all day then watched a Netflix movie on my 16” and it kinda just solidified my thought. Though again the 16” is annoyingly large once you start using it you just can’t go back.. you just can’t. I will forget my love of the 14” size and feel and succumb to the 16” death and enjoy it everytime I remember how poor the screen real estate is on the 14 for workflow.

I get it, we really are nitpicking, there are people with bigger problems in the world, but when you spend so much money on a computer, over 5,000 in some models, you need it to be perfect, and spending that much money can make you regret and worry if you got the right model.
I mean you can literally walk into a Best Buy or Apple store and snag a base model. You just have to keep checking their stock. Any custom orders are going to be delayed regardless of a RU-vidr buying & returning.
