I always enjoy your videos Mark. I have the 16" and it rarely leaves its cradle. Every port is plugged with something and it makes a great desktop computer. If I need to pack it, I'll tolerate the extra size. Regardless of which size a person lands on, they sure are a wonderful machine.

Always enjoy your reviews, mate! I'm sticking with the 16" (M1 Pro) because none of the things you mention affect me. I lug this thing around everywhere. The only inconvenience I can imagine would be on a plane but I don't travel much. When I do, I don't take this beast with me. Still, I fully get how form factor is a big issue for professional content creators who work travel.

There are two ways of looking at the screen size: one way is when travel, you would like to bring the minimal you carry, in that case, 14 inch is great, with an usable screen, and good portability. But there are another point of view: when travel, the MacBook screen is the only screen you have, so why not make it larger and you can work more comfortable? I am kind of lean towards to the second idea: I have a 32 inch monitor at home, so no matter which size I choose, it is fine at home. But if I want to travel and work, even a m1 MacBook Air can be heavy, as I will carry my S5m2 and maybe some kind of audio recording devices. So I don’t mind to add some weight from a larger 16 inch form factors, I just want to make my job down as comfortable as possible, if I am just travel for fun, plan to get an iPad mini, and carry my camera to enjoy the world. Also another thing I had was the battery swelling issue with my last 15 inch MacBook Pro 2015, so I would love a large body to prevent the heat issue, in order to save the battery a bit. The perfect world is m3 pro MacBook Air 15 inch with HDMI or 3 thunderbolt ports in a reasonable price if people can dream.

I went for a discounted 16 M1pro MacBook Pro in Oktober as I wanted the biggest possible laptop screen on a Mac and because I would be using it at home primarily. When traveling I prefer my MacBook Air M1. I haven't regretted that decision as I really has come to like the huge difference in screen real estate between my to computers. A Size difference that has made me starting to use FCP as my main editor Instead of LumaFusion. As voice overs does sound better than done I FCP compared to LumaFusion. Final Cut however was too crowded on my Air and I thus preferred to use LumaFusion on that one.

if you have a desk at home and can connect the 14 inch to a monitor, i would also go for the 14 inch. However, I travel all the time and don't have an office where I can connect the macbook to screens. that's why 16 inch is better for me. it's my portable desktop and the larger display has more advantages for me. much better for my eyes in the long run.
@gerald1964
@gerald1964 Год назад
My son uses Logic but the 14 inch display on the M1 MB Pro is not quite as large as desired for this application. I could see where the 16 inch MB Pro would be large enough. He pairs the 14 inch display of the MB Pro with a 24 inch LG Ultra Fine display when working at his desk. It would seem that the 16 inch MB Pro would be the way to go if this machine will serve as a complete desktop replacement with no external monitor being used while the 14 inch MB Pro would be the way to go paired with an external display for a hybrid mobile / desktop environment. If one is getting a MB Pro after all, the applications are likely more demanding when compared to some who would get a MB Air so an equally larger display might be in order for such a machine.

I've have the 16" 2019 MacBook Pro now for about 2.5 years and I'm replacing with newest (M2) MacBook Pro 14 inch. I've often felt the 16 inch is chunky, and the 2019 version is even apparently about half pound lighter than the latest 16 inch version. My plan is to start using my older ipad in Sidecar mode to compensate for the smaller screen real estate. At bars and restaurants I've often felt the 16" was overly bulky, and (for instance) often has to be put away when did arrives. I'm hopeful the 14" will just "feel" more nimble and less like a bulky beast. 🤞
@aaronsteers
@aaronsteers 10 месяцев назад
I chose the 14 inch and I'm very happy with it. It takes up less table space when I'm on the go at restaurants and coffee shops - and I haven't really minded the smaller size when I'm in other areas - like sitting in the yard. When I want all the space, I use my dual-screen 26" setup.
@ExplorerOfTheGalaxy

@@aaronsteers That's it. I'm planning to get the 14" knowing 16" has a better size and battery (marginally).. My actual Windows laptop is 14" but I don't care 'cause I barely look at it. I use a 43" TV as my main screen anyways. When I'm on the go I plan to buy an iPad to use Sidecar or an external portable monitor as I really need dual screen to work (developer). When I'm not in a hurry to use it for work I can deal w/ it without carrying the 2nd monitor around.. like in short travels or cafes.. Your experience makes me rethink the 14" instead of 16". It would be a pain in the ass to carry a bulky thing around and that doesn't fit most of backpacks or is a heavier option.. if battery doesn't get there for me I always carry a powerbank w/ me..

@DipSet85
@DipSet85 9 месяцев назад
They really should have done a 15 inch pro version lol I find the 14 inch too small, more of a netbook or very close to 13 inch form factor. The 16 inch is actually smaller than i thought it would be. Its smaller than most 15.4 inch standard laptops. Its just a tad heavier. But even then, i did not notice the 14 inch being considerably lighter than the 16 inch even tho its 500 grams difference maybe because the 14 inch is a lot more compact hence it is denser. I personally do not travel a lot with a laptop, just from house to house or house to work. But if you are frequently in coffee shops and on the train or plane I totally understand how the 14 would be more portable and would recommend it that way. I’ll mostly be using it on a desk, on the bed or on a sofa. So size wont be an issue. Its not as big as it is on youtube videos

if you change the 14 to more space in display settings you get the exact same as shown on the 16 but a bit smaller scale because its only 14 though its plenty usable this way as long as its being used as a laptop, the moment you put it up on a stand or something and use external keyboard and mouse then it becomes a problem and you must swap back to standard resolution

I have personal 14” MBP M1 Pro 16/512 and 16” MBP M1 Max 32/1024, provided by my employer. And 16” just feels gigantic in hands. On the other hand, screen’s real estate difference is not that drastic from my perspective, at least for coding. If I had to choose one machine, it would be 14”, just a bit more specked up than mine. Well, unless I needed to push the cooling system to its limits 24/7.

I have both also and feel the same. If you change the resolution on the 14” to “more space” it effectively shows the same amount of stuff as the 16” on default and I find that perfect for lap use. The 16” has a wow factor the 14” doesn’t have and the M2 Max chip takes a pretty significant hit in the 14” due to the lower thermal performance. Then you have the better battery performance of the 16”… I’d only consider the 14” if I was going for the M2 Pro, though I’d still opt for the 16” due to the above reasons.

@@merrh8819 its enough for me, I’m mainly coding and doing design in figma and 16 inch is perfect, it’s depends of the person, I know a lot of programmers that need 2 external monitors but I’m fine with my laptop only, I was using 13 inch m1 before and also it’s fine to code on that, but 16 is a massive improvement not gonna lie, and it’s not that heavy to travel with it.

I like the form factor of the 14 but I’m worried about the RAM limitations down the line as I feel like 16gb is becoming more standard for everyday use but perhaps I’m wrong. I just don’t want to have to upgrade again in 3 years and I got kind of a crazy deal on the 16 inch. I’m half tempted to keep the 16 and then get a 13.6” Air for on the go. I always find it odd how reviewers focus on what is "supposed" to be important, instead of what really is. KISS....Keep It Simple Stupid. The main difference between a 14 and 16 is... THE SCREEN. If you're focus is performance, you can get a 14 with max performance. Or a 16 with max performance. But you don't choose one size or the other because of performance, you can do that with either size. It's all about the screen. What screen size is more comfortable for your daily use case. If you use you laptop mostly as a desktop replacement plugged into a display, then the 14 is probably fine because you mostly rely on external monitors. If you use it as a true laptop, and work off the native display.... it is really, really, really nice to have that big screen. So then it comes down to travel. Fine, it is easier to travel with a smaller machine. Duh. That said, your "travel time" is a fraction of your work time for the overwhelming majority of people, so why trade a more comfortable work experience for a minority of time spent traveling? The reality is that if you plan to "work" during travel, just about every laptop is to big for a tray and if the person in front of you leans their seat back.... your machine is toast. Let's get real people. You buy a 16in because you want a bigger screen. No other reason.
@ShredzZ
@ShredzZ 10 месяцев назад
traveling with 16 inch is not that hard as most ppl think. About 14 inch its get hotter, has worse battery. But as you said if somebody gonna plug laptop to the external monitor it's better to choose 14 inch. Im only using my laptop as main device without any other monitors so I've got 16 inch. Btw about performance its really small difference between 14 and 16 because if you choose 16 inch you can switch battery to 'High Power Mode", on 14 inch you can't.

Also I've enjoyed taking the 14" in my camera backpack, which has a space allocated for 15 inch. That and my camera gear, is an acceptable weight to carry around. Nice thing is, the macbook edges aren't rubbing away, keeping it scratch free. I guess everyone has their own reasons for a 16 or 14 inch. The 14" also helps me to be a bit more organised. I haven't found any issues using that size screen. The more I use it, the better it feels. Hope this helps.
