another game that really had potential was the single player version life is feudal: your own, which let you take over individual npcs and had terrain deformation.
it also teaches us many stuff about real life thing. like population control. we, human, NEED TO CONTROL OUR POPULATION. And when we control our population growth, that means controlling our housing. and along the way, there gotta be surplus of humans. some gonna be homeless. but after some times, there gonna be some deficit like in japan condition today. IT'S ALL NORMAL. CONTROL OUR GLOBAL POPULATION. IT HELPS TO STABILIZE OUR RESOURCES USAGE. STABILIZE OUR GLOBAL CLIMATE.
Tips: 1) You can task laborers to "collect everything" in a small area a little distance from your village. This will give you a short boost to available logs, ore and stone, and the forest will slowly replenish the 'bald spot' you leave behind without having to asign a forester job. 2) when you start farming, try to make each plot small enough so that one person can work it efficiently. Lots of smaller farms end up giving you more food than a few large ones with multiple farmers working it. 3) Make multiple "forester, hunter, gatherer" enclaves around your main town to keep a steady supply and variety of food coming in long term.
Great to see you back at Banished. Teacher: I always set one extra on the Teaching job... if there is no work, they act exactly as a labourer; current teacher dies, they slot right into the job and you don't have to worry about not having a spare labourer. Of course you add a new extra teaching job as the old one dies. I always hated losing all my educated chillun. cheers Biffa
I love Banished my fav game, I like to start off in Adam and Eve mode (2 people) thats quite the challenge, but it takes much longer to get established. Regarding the roads, you can make them diagonal by holding down shift. You need storage close to production areas, otherwise they have to walk all the way to the village to store products such as fish etc which will negatively effect productivity
I played an absurd amount of Banished back in the day, when I could still game for hours. I can still sometimes hear the winter music in my soul! Other people have commented how it was The Template for so many other games but ooh the sound design was also quite good.
I literally played this yesterday! Excellent stuff. I always keep the gatherer's hut pinned, so I can see the ring around it and make sure it is packed with trees, which maximise the output for it, the forester's hut and the hunters, which I put right next to it. Make a crossroads in the centre between them, and stick storage and a couple of huts next to them. That crossroads will form the backbone of a large community way easier than other food sources.
According to Steam, it's been almost 4 years since I last played Banished. What an awesome game, though I have a different game that's had me hooked the past four years. This is my first time seeing Biffa play Banished and I'm so hoping to see more! I'll be sure to have my cup of tea at the ready.
Love this game playing since it came out. TIP; when a shop reaches the resource limit like clothing they will become a labourer until they need to go make more clothing so no need to micro that unless you just want to change their profession, which is often needed at the beginning of the game.
I always get the "Iron is iron" mod. I don't like having to smelt iron right from the beginning. Also remember that the trading boats will only come on that wider river. If your fishing lake isn't connected to it, then it's not a good place for the trading dock. I'm really stoked to see you play more Banished!
Never heard of this game. On the other hand watching Biffa play is quite relaxing, so unless we suddenly get into survival horror I'll watch anything, really.
Banished is basically survival horror. All goes good, crops wiped out, death wave, kaboom. All goes good, not enough firewood, hypothermia, kaboom. All goes good, too many people, kaboom. Really it's all about the kaboom.
I loved when spring arrived, that fresh spring green leaves appeared on the trees. And they turned lovely yellow and dissapeared towards the end of autumn. A tiny thing, but I loved it.
The city builder that all city builders are based upon. I still play this. I started watching you, Vaypah, and Skye and participated in the beta. Good to see you playing it.
In Dawn of Man, you could set production limits to a percentage of the population. It could be more or less than 100%, depending on whether you wanted a surplus for trade or not. That's a pretty clever mechanic. If your population remains steady, your people will automatically make replacements for any tools or clothes that are worn out, and if your population grows, your stock of items will grow to match.
YESSSS! Banished is back! Remember that the laborers bring the resources to building sites, builders only do the building. You don't need to have so many builders unless you are in a hurry to get something finished.
Biffa, a suggestion for early game is to place a duck hunter on waters edge where you see reeds grow and duck fly over. I've found I get 1000 food a year from one hunter in the duck hunting hide!
I LOVE this game!!! I have gone back and re-visited a number of times. Love to see you playing this again! Yes, the graphics are not what CS2 looks like, but the genius of the developers on this game is making the mechanics challenging, but not too hard.. just love it!
Holding shift while drawing a road gives you a diagonal. So glad to see someone playing this. Love CS and all the rest, but Banished and it's mods still hold up and continue to be an inspiration to game devs.
I was wondering about the town square layout. Was waiting for you to put down a field so you could assure at least one good harvest before the first winter. I'm at minute 13+ and I'm yelling and stressing LOL
I also thought that like farmers, folks whose workplace has maxed out become labourers, don't they? So then you don't have to micro-manage EVERY workplace.
I've had Banished in my Steam library for many years but never played it. Seeing your video has made me want to get it installed and start playing. Would defo enjoy watching more of this series!
To clarify the point about markets creating even distribution, without using mods, the priority order for resource storage is (1) markets, (2) houses, (3) storage barns. Until you build a market, everyone will take what they harvest/make to THEIR house, and the leftovers are taken to the storage barn. That is why you saw the fisher delivering fish to the fisher's house BEFORE taking the rest to the storage barn. As with real life, houses don't share resources, so whatever is stored in houses is only available to the residents of THAT house. So, citizens WILL starve to death, even though the house directly next to theirs has food, and they WILL freeze to death, even though the house directly next to theirs has firewood and clothing. It is 100% accurate to real life. However, markets being the highest priority for resource storage, all resources will be taken directly to the market, THEN the nearby households will buy whatever that they need from the market, and the leftovers will be taken to the storage barn. In addition, after you build a market, all the nearby households will dump all their resources into the market, THEN buy back whatever they need. So, markets FORCE even distribution. Ignore your stats. Simply harvesting/making resources is useless. If you want ALL your citizens to have those resources, markets are what distribute them to your citizens. As such, the most efficient town layout is to build a market first, then build houses in concentric rings around the market. Think of it like a series of squares. Four rows of houses, a market, four rows of houses, a market, four rows of houses, and so on. Or, you can build little enclaves with a market at the center.
I've enjoyed playing *_Foundation_* again lately, and tho not yet finished, it's still a soothing and cozy game. And I really like the 'organic' way the inhabitants organise their surroundings. Banished I haven't touched in 7-8 years. Might give it a go again, and check out some mods.
When a manufacturer has reached it's limit IE wood cutter has 200 firewood, they automatically work as a labourer. No need to keep turning them on and off again.
It really annoys me how they abandoned this game, it could have become like manor lords or something better, but the game still holds up, especially with the glorious modding community
OMG YES. This is literally the best city builder ever. With the megamod or whatever. I love it. I just want an optimization... Not new wannabe Banished...
I would love to see you play more of this game. I have spent the last 3 or 4 weeks watching you play cs1 and cs2 and thoroughly enjoyed every minute. I myself would be a complete failure at these games.
If I remember right you should not need to close jobs, nor remove builders as they will act as laborers if they have nothing to do. I'd forget to add people as they are needed then wonder why I have no firewood in late autumn. I keep thinking about dusting off the old Banished and giving it a go. Maybe I should try to Colonial mod. I looked into it a few times but always felt overwhelmed by all the new options, and ended up playing without it. It is nice to see a youtuber going back to playing older games. So many only play the newest stuff, but often revising old games is just as fun as something new...especially if it is one of the better games that has not been fully matched since it came out.
Would love to see you make another series of this amazing game. It's a while since i've played, but I do remember that having storage near your various industries was important, as it means your workers can drop them off close by instead of walking into to the town centre. Wells for fire fighting are vital also.
I've loved this game for eons, and I do go back to it quite regularly and get obsessed all over again. This game, even without mods, is THE penultimate city builder, IMHO. And look at those graphics 10 years later! They ain't horrid, for sure! Believe it or not, I have NEVER played with the Colonial Charter mod! (I know, I know, I heard the collective gasp out there...) My next step today is to install this mod and play around with it. I've not played Banished since last fall... I do believe I'm about to fall into the Banished rabbit hole again, thanks to this video. LOL ;) I really enjoyed this look at the game with this mod, thanks for doing this - I'd most certainly watch more!
Ive personally never unistallied banished (except for a new PC if that counts) since i got it around when it released. Especially with mods , the game is still remarkably good and holds up well. I play it on occasion and when i do its usually for an obscene amount of time by accident lol.
It's amazing how this game influenced the city building genre. I personally disliked it for the survival aspect (in the end, I just wanted another Settlers game), same is for the clones, but it's amazing how it has created its own genre that even after 10 years is getting new releases.
I also still play this game. It is neat seeing different starting strategies. I tend to go all out on fishing at first because it is a quick burst of food when the docks are fully staffed. But yeah I'd love to see more videos of this game ^_^
I've tested clones of banished, but none has the charm and versatility of that one with Colonial Charters. It's a go-to each time I tire of the "bigger" city builders like anno or civ city. I also think good city builders age very well. No need for them to be fancy to still be riveting.
Tip: You can leave your Shop Keepers on their jobs even if they aren't being productive at their shop. They will act as a Laborer when they have nothing to do. They will not show in the list as Laborers though.
Biffa if you hold shift when you are placing a road it will make it a diagonal path from the starting point to your cursor!! Very handy and makes roads the pawns will actually follow c:
I'm not a huge fan of the "please play this game or that game" (although I am guilty of it myself) but if you *did* do a full series of Banished, I would be a very happy guy :)
I dove back into banished myself about a year ago and had a blast playing it again. That said I never played it with any mods so I doubt any of my tips will help.
