Surprise!
Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays! I couldn't tease the Gretsch and Rickenbacker without providing some rocking early Beatles content, right?
It's amazing that I've recorded this song probably a dozen times since high school, but this is the first time with a Gretsch. I think I finally got it right!
Sullivan-era drumhead courtesy of Russ Lease. Another bit of trivia - John's playing is gentler on the record than in live performances. It's a little jarring to see the Rickenbacker played relatively softly on this, but it yields the accurate sound from the studio version. Maybe I'll do a live version one day and let loose!
Major credit to Rob Taylor from those immortal "Beatles To-a-Tee" videos for unearthing that buried John rhythm riff during George's solo. Kudos, Rob!
I have one more early Beatles song before taking a trip to the Pepper era. More to come...
Instruments:
- Rickenbacker 320B (John Lennon)
- Gretsch Country Gentleman (George Harrison)
- Hofner CT Series bass
- Ludwig Classic Maple 20/12/14 Black Oyster Pearl
- Beatles drumhead from Russ Lease at www.BeatleSuits.com
- Drums recorded via PreSonus Studio 1824C Interface (drums: 5 microphones used)
- Drums mic'd with Cad Audio Stage7 7-Piece Drum Microphones (micing toms, snare & bass drum)
- Drums recorded and mixed with PreSonus Studio One
- Shure SM57 (under hi-hat, all other instruments)
- All instruments except drums recorded on Audacity via a USB soundcard on an HP Pavilion
- Guitar Amp: Vox Mini3 G2
- Handclaps 3x tracked & compressed with Studio One
Video Equipment:
- Camera: Canon M50
- Edited with Adobe Premiere Pro on HP Envy 32'' All in One
Happy Holidays!

Bravo! One of my fav McCartney bass lines. On the recording I have the handclaps bass and George are panned full left. I was so excited when I first noticed this because I could isolate them by turning balance knob full left! This was like 40 years ago.

Oh my LORD. The man, mjsokes, is back. I have to say that rhythm guitar is real janky and you seem slightly mad at it. Beautiful. I hope all is well with you and am very happy to see you loving making music again. You took my love of the Beatles ten years ago and allowed me to demystify some of the music. A genuine gift. Thank you from the bottom of heart sir. As you are back I have to ask, would you consider reuploading or remaking some of your seminal work, things like, how to play like john, how to play like george (the three styles of his career), explanations around the lead for this track, the drum cover of the word etc.?

When I clicked on this, I thought, this is where I get him not being accurate to the record, which I probably listen to every freaking day at the gym. There’s no way he hits George’s little unique fill about a third of the way in but DAMMIT you hit it!!!

Excellent job Michael. You do have a knack for Beatles nuances. Their relationships with their respective instruments really came across in their recordings, and you capture this better than most. Amazing that you can play drums, bass, guitars and keys...that is real talent. I am a huge Beatles fan and I've spent a year in my studio recreating 35 Harrison tunes from the early days to his solo years and I know what it takes to dissect a piece and get into the heads of the artists to faithfully reproduce performances. Glad I found your channel, look forward to more from you, my friend.

@@charleyvoncount9999 I'll tell you what - I've been listening to the stereo mixes and isolating channels to study the performances and decide which guitars were used, and there's a LOT of J-160E on this album! I think John used the Rickenbacker on "Chains," "Boys," "I Saw Her Standing There," so far, but I definitely hear some of that J-160E acoustic bleedthrough on the vocal track for "Baby It's You"! I might have to disappoint you on this! But we shall see.

Very nice indeed but if I can offer a correction…there is definitely no “C” chord on this song…at least no guitars play C. The correct chord is Am or Am7…the bass plays C. Every non Beatle version plays the C chord and they’re all incorrect…watch them play in live…lots of examples on RU-vid. And love those guitars and drums!

I'm not playing C here! It's an Am7 shape John used in this performance - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dYpVNpXCAls.html. Skip to 7:15.
