Great rhythm guitar part, or the greatest rhythm guitar part?
This is almost certainly the most fun song on planet earth to cover. I've recorded too many versions to count. That aggressive rhythm guitar, the frantic energy, the wonderfully odd but somehow perfect lead guitar and drum fills. Pure magic.
You might notice I've made some adjustments to how I play John's part. After listening to the Rock Band isolations, I don't hear sliding up the neck in the intro, which John did live but apparently not on the album. Also, John's playing on the bridge/middle 8 is barely audible, and I wonder if there might have been an edit that removed him entirely, or perhaps he simply stopped playing? Anyway, I hear a faint strumming in there somewhere in the mix, so I replicated it here as best as I could.
For anyone who doubts John played the Eminor and B7 as I do here, I have video evidence! • The Beatles - I Want T... . Not that this video proves anything (since it's a mimed performance), but you can clearly see John playing those shapes on the neck. He did end up changing this around for future live performances, and I don't blame him. But I am 1000% sure John played the chords on the album as you see them here. My ears don't lie!
What a fun song. Pure joy.

For John Lennon’s rhythm guitar part, since I don’t have a Ric 325, I just use my 2007 Squier Affinity Series Stratocaster, which has a maple fretboard, and I’m using positions 2 and 3 with the tone rolled back to 1

This song is a great example of George Harrison's role as a lead guitarist in the early days. He certainly wasn't just following along with John the whole time and added his own elements to the songs. Great interpretation yet again. Also, just wondering, what camera do you use? The image quality is astonishing!
@MichaelSokil

Canon M50! It’s a handheld vlogging camera made specifically for RU-vid, but the photo quality is excellent too. Usually retails between $600-$700.

Thank you for posting this. It is always fun to watch and listen to you play these songs that take me back in time. This song literally changed my life. Even you may not be able to imagine what that driving, hard-energy opening sounded like to a teenager who had never heard music like that before. No wonder the girls screamed and the guys look on with dropped jaws and wonderment at "How do they sound like that?" Was it genius that they did little things in addition to the big things that made them so different? As you play the song, you will notice that unlike other songs that are softer on the verses with a more vigorous playing on the chorus, they did the opposite. Loud on the verses and very soft on the chorus. I don't think it was an edit in the recording. I feel they did it purposely. Part of what made them so different, so brilliant. Its why people still lay and listen to their music today. Thanks again for all of these. Watching you play fills a void compared to just listening to the music.

Another excellent recording! These rank right up there with hearing new Beatle songs the day they were released. Is there a reason your John guitar is so dirty?

@@MichaelSokil aged like a fine wine might I add! Johns original (First) Rickenbacker 325 (V81) was beat up a lot like this 320b that he converted to be like his 325!

Finally!, someone who plays rhythm guitar and lead guitar as close to the original. I have long watched videos on how to play X song, which many people follow and copy the same mistakes. Almost no one takes the trouble to listen carefully to songs, isolated tracks or watch different TV and live videos to interpret what and how it is played. About the difference in the chords that John used in the studio recording and live is totally true, it also happens in Twist & Shout, All my Loving (a B7 is heard in the studio version, but live it plays a B), Roll over beethoven, etc.

Mike, I don't think I ever asked you your opinion on this (if I did, it was years ago and I've forgotten, lol): I know you didn't have a 425 at the time you did this, but what's your opinion about the infills George did? Do you think those were overdubs, or just the Gent straight through? I know that on most (if not al)l live performaces, they just dropped those,, which lends more to the theory it was the 425 for those and he couldn't easily replicate rhe bends and tone with the Gent. It's been a long time since I even thought about it, but the video came back up on my list which prompted me to remember and ask. -Jeff

There is a bit of argument over o the IWTHYH isolated guitar tracks on RU-vid vid saying George used his Rick 425 on this song. I never heard that before. Can anyone confirm that? I always thought it was the Gent.

OK cover. As a guitarist, I didn't like your chop 'n change vid editing for what should be self apparent reasons. I was interested to see your fingerings/voicings of the parts, but that edit made it a CBF PITA. Should have just left it focussed in 4 segmented windows that way we could select which window we wanted to watch and watch the vid again for the other part if desired. Mike Pachelli FTW.
