Doctor Who is a British science-fiction television programme broadcast by the BBC since 1963. The programme depicts the adventures of a Time Lord called the Doctor, an extraterrestrial being who appears to be human. The Doctor explores the universe in a time-travelling space ship called the TARDIS. The TARDIS exterior appears as a blue British police box, which was a common sight in Britain in 1963 when the series first aired. With various companions, the Doctor combats foes, works to save civilisations, and helps people in need.
Beginning with William Hartnell, thirteen actors have headlined the series as the Doctor. The transition from one actor to another is written into the plot of the show with the concept of regeneration into a new incarnation, a plot device in which a Time Lord "transforms" into a new body when the current one is too badly harmed to heal normally.
A series of special episodes of the British science fiction television programme Doctor Who will air to celebrate the programme's 60th anniversary. The episodes were written by Russell T Davies, and will be broadcast on BBC One in November 2023, preceding the following fourteenth series. David Tennant will appear as the Fourteenth Doctor before Ncuti Gatwa takes over as the Fifteenth Doctor. Catherine Tate was also confirmed to be returning to the show in the 2023 specials.
The three specials were directed by Rachel Talalay, Tom Kingsley and Chanya Button respectively. Filming moved from Roath Lock Studios to Wolf Studios once Bad Wolf became a co-producer of the series; filming commenced in May 2022, and was complete
David Tennant will appear as the Fourteenth Doctor before Ncuti Gatwa takes over as the Fifteenth Doctor. Catherine Tate was also confirmed to be returning to the show in the 2023 specials. Yasmin Finney joined the cast for the anniversary, to portray a character named Rose. Bernard Cribbins, Jacqueline King and Karl Collins are also set to return as Wilfred Mott, Sylvia Noble and Shaun Temple, respectively.
On 29 July 2021, the BBC announced that Chris Chibnall, who served as executive producer and showrunner of the series for the Thirteenth Doctor, would depart the series after a run of specials in 2022. In the BBC press release, Chibnall is quoted as saying: "I wish our successors - whoever the BBC and BBC Studios choose - as much fun as we've had. They're in for a treat!" The future of the programme was first teased by Piers Wenger on 25 August 2021, when he said an upcoming change for Doctor Who would be "radical".
On 24 September 2021, the BBC announced Russell T Davies would return to Doctor Who as showrunner, after having previously acted as showrunner from 2005-2010 for the Ninth and Tenth Doctors. He will succeed Chibnall for the show's 60th anniversary in 2023 and beyond. Davies will be joined by the Bad Wolf production company, which was founded by former Doctor Who executive producer Julie Gardner and former BBC head of drama Jane Tranter. In October 2021, it was announced that Sony would acquire a majority of Bad Wolf. Bad Wolf also took over creative control of Doctor Who beginning with the specials, allowing the BBC to focus on establishing Doctor Who as a global brand.
The Fourteenth Doctor is the current incarnation of the Doctor, the fictional protagonist of the BBC science fiction television programme, Doctor Who. The Fourteenth Doctor is portrayed by Scottish actor, David Tennant, who previously portrayed the Tenth Doctor.
Within the series narrative, the Doctor is a millennia-old, alien Time Lord from the planet Gallifrey, with somewhat unknown origins, who travels in time and space in their TARDIS, frequently with companions. At the end of life, the Doctor regenerates; as a result, the physical appearance and personality of the Doctor changes.
Ncuti Gatwa had previously been announced as Jodie Whittaker's successor as the programme's lead, and many reports stated he would play the Fourteenth Doctor and that Whittaker's Thirteenth Doctor would regenerate into an incarnation portrayed by Gatwa. Upon Jodie Whittaker's final appearance as the character, she instead regenerated into a form similar to the Tenth Doctor. This character, portrayed by Tennant, was confirmed to be the Fourteenth Doctor, with later clarification that Ncuti Gatwa would actually portray the Fifteenth Doctor

RTD always starts with "fun" - Smith & Jones, Partners in Crime - then when the viewers are hooked he goes as dark as he pleases. But he of all the showrunners understands the need to get people along for an entertaining ride first.

@@user-un9go4qe5i Umm…his first run suggests otherwise. It was what we call “a phenomenal success” and the structure of each series was starting off light and moving into the darker stuff as it progressed. (I got extremely carried away writing this, apologies in advance!) I’m getting a sort of “Partners in Crime” vibe from “Space Babies”, curious if you think that’s an apt comparison (if you can say, of course!)..and if not like Partners in Crime, what episode its most like in your opinion? I think it’s always good to go in not expecting much at all, as then you can only be pleasantly surprised. I remember thinking Partners in Crime sounded dreadful when I first read bits about it (aliens made from fat? That horrid Donna bride as the new companion? Good grief what is happening to MY show???). But it ended up that I absolutely love Partners in Crime! The adipose surprised me, actually endeared me to them, and Donna was instantly likable, quite unlike the Runaway Bride Donna and of course she quickly became my favorite New Series Companion! And that Shock appearance from Rose! Holy bleeping hell! Now, not saying “Space Babies” is going to be like PIC, of course, just that I get that sort of feel of a lite, fun romp; the stakes aren’t the universe or even the future of earth, but will be a nice bit of traipsing about with the new Doctor showing his new companion some of the weirdness and wackiness that traveling in the TARDIS has to offer. And I hope it is fun and entertaining as I didnt truly get into the XMas special, “The Church on Ruby Road”, which in my opinion was somewhere between odd and boring. But that’s fine as I typically find Christmas specials a bit lacking, but gotta admit I was expecting this one to be a bit better than usual given it is the introduction to the New Doctor and hopefully would got all out to woo new viewers and make enough of an impact to stick with them to ensure they come back for more when then full series airs. But alas it was just mediocre. I mean it was fine, the new Doctor was fine, Ruby was fine, but all together it just…was there. The goblin things did nothing for me, I found the goblin ship, and the song on the ship to be full of potential and something that should have been a “ohmigawd that’s so freaking cool!” followed by the song feeling like it should have been a surprise and rip roaring hilarious so audiences would be smiling ear to ear in wonder saying “I don’t know what this show is but it’s wonderfully weird and wacky and I WILL be back for more!”. I really wanted to react like that, I feel like the intention was I and the rest of the audience *shoudl* be reacting like that…but it fell utterly flat and just ended up being boring to me instead of the unexpected surprise that I think it should have been. I felt almost guilty I wasn’t more impressed and wowed by it. The goblin singer should have sounded more “goblin-ly” instead of just a regular human woman but they didn’t do any sound modulation to her voice, and her lips did not match the performance. It reminded me precisely of the songs from the previous x-mas specials…trying too hard and succeeding in only being instantly forgettable. The lyrics were weird like they were trying to be shocking and/or funny but neither. Every goblin who popped up with a “hilarious” (not) one liner after each stanza was utter cringe. The whole event seemed improbable; instead of singing about eating the baby just freaking eat it. It might have been more entertaining if they had kidnapped humans (since they made zero effort for the song to sound goblinly) forced to perform for their pleasure or become dessert. Or possibly be dessert anyways, since one tiny baby hardly would be more than a jelly baby to the goblin Jabba and the annoying song about eating the baby taking longer to sing than plopping the poor thing in its mouth and swallowing would take. I mean the ship full of goblins all seem like they are waiting for their turn but obviously there’d be nothing left for them. Grotesque? Of course, but so basic you wonder what. You must be missing as none of it makes sense. Perhaps the song should be more about their existence and how they are attracted to the chaos of humans which would have helped, IMO, the audience to understand them better, especially long term fans who are used to more traditional aliens and robots and such, not fantastical fantasy creatures in flying ships which move slowly but aren’t chased or targeted by earth’s alien defenses (and pretty sure there’s a reason for this but can’t recall what it was/is; another reason it should have been explained better!). Anyway, I hate to sound so cynical and critical. I love Who and have been anticipating RTD’s return since it was first announced announced and positively giddy that my favorite show of all time might return to the lofty heights it achieved during RTD’s first reign! I desperately want Doctor Who back and the world wide must-see series it used to be. Honestly, the way many things have gone and are trying to go in the world, I feel we need Doctor Who desperately. We need our Heroes - and yes, TV Show Heroes are the modern day equivalent of what Hercules and Jason were in the ancient past, we need our Heroes to remind us what it means to be “The Good Guys” and that we stand up for what’s right, defend the helpless and banish the bad guys for committing wrong and being nasty and trying to hurt the innocent. RTD has the skill to write and communicate powerful emotional content and this is something that has been missing from Doctor Who for sometime…there’s been no heart in much of the series of late, much less two! :-) And I love that he includes the people of all walks of life and all persuasions, but I do worry at times he can go a bit heavy handed and even preach to humans and their backwards and oftentimes very-slow-to-accept-change or not always the most welcoming to anyone different. It’s such a touchy subject I almost dread even trying to bring it up, but I do know,at the current time, people are just as likely to over-react in a negative way toward too many topics, and that RTD has the skill to communicate with sensitively and honestly through this, and help people get in touch with their true feelings, not just react this way or that way because of something else they’ve heard first. We need people to be their best, and unfortunately we see throngs of people every day being the absolute nastiest they can possibly be, about all manner of topics. We need Doctor Who, we need to be reminded that humans come in all shapes and sizes and belief systems and also can’t help where they were born - we’re all from the same planet for heaven’s sake!, how can countries and skin colors and who we fall in love with cause some people so much hatred and grief when there are beings from other planets? Beings from Other planets and times, People from other times from our world and countless others? In a Universe so vast we can’t even conceive of it…and from what whistle blowers are saying to the US Congress this may be closer to reality than we ever thought possible…. Doctor Who is a show like no other, and can show us a fictionalized *perspective* that helps our minds to expand past the piddling insignificant issues that some humans obsess over, on the way to acceptance of far greater reality. A reality where we suddenly grow..and realize with a shock that what some people were ready to kill one another over is so mind numbingly insignificant in the greater scheme of thing that one can change their perspective - and thus their minds - in literally a minute or two. I truly cannot think of any show that even comes close to this.

I personally don’t like it when influencers or unorganized press are screened things well in advance. It’s genuinely really annoying. Like I’d get it maybe a day or two before, but we’re a week and a half out. And there’s so many chances for spoilers. Everything should be a surprise to pretty much everyone at the same time.
