When we first bought our Sailboat 3 years ago, it was only outfitted for light weekend sailing. Since then we’ve transformed her into a floating home with all of the necessary systems to keep our family safe and comfortable, for extended periods of time, while living out in nature. Sanitation, laundry, fresh water, ventilation, even the ability to produce these videos. We can run all of these systems for long stretches of time, completely off-grid. But all of these systems ultimately rely on one thing, electricity.
Now our system is relatively robust but this week a chain of events lead to our electrical system completely shutting down, and we find ourselves anchored off of a remote island in the middle of the Aegean Sea, without any of the systems that we rely on to survive. And it’s up to us to figure out what on earth we can do about it.

As a retired aviation electrician in the USN, I found myself stressed out right along with you Jordon bc I know your main focus was, of course, caring for Isabella, Desiree, and Oso. I was completely immersed in your troubleshooting processes as your logical troubleshooting took place. My goal used to be fixing military jets so the platform could meet its combat requirements whereas your goal was to affect repair for the safety and well being of Desiree, Isabella and Oso. A riveting video. I can't tell you how beautiful it was to see Atticus cutting thru the water under full sail again. Congratulations Jordon, A JOB WELL DONE. You have every right to be so proud of yourself, I know I am! Thanks for sharing. Be well Jordon, sail safe, and hug Desiree, Isabella, and Oso often. Thanks for sharing.

A retired sailor and engineer , boat systems are always difficult to troubleshoot it seemed to me most failures occur at the most difficult time and when finally tracked down to the root cause seem to be located in the most difficult place to make a repair! Your work around in my opinion was an excellent one!

Your openness in sharing the challenges of dealing with all systems going down is truly commendable. Your honesty and resilience in addressing the situation not only make your journey relatable but also showcase your strength in overcoming obstacles. Your story is a powerful reminder of the value of perseverance and learning from every experience. And I am Floating Village Life.

Wow! Great Vid! I hope you aren’t relying on your bilge pump to handle grey water. If so you really should plumb the washer to a separate grey water bilge. They are self contained units with float switch, pump. You should also include a screen prior to that pump, lots of lint/hair in that laundry outflow. Hope you can bring that battery back to life!

Rock formations are volcanic rocks that were created long before the chuch ended up on the rocks. They built the chuch against the rocks to keep it from sliding off the mountain. Hope you get your electrical working again. Enjoy the sailing. Remember the pain will make the good times more appreciated. Mom, is going through morning sickness with the second baby. You need to do as much as you can to help her. She may even become biatchy. I hope you make it through the hardships she will incur. You may even want to pack your little girl with you to give her more breaks when you go walking. Good luck. May the force be with you.

I'm glad everything worked out with your electrical system, way to troubleshoot Jordan. Desiree, I am praying today for the nausea to go cease. I had what you are experiencing when I was having my first daughter, sick for 7 months with her, but with my second daughter I didn't think I was pregnant because I wasn't sick at all, so I didn't think I was pregnant until about the 3rd month. Hang in there, once that passes you will feel super and love being pregnant. At least that is my prayer. You all be safe and give little Esa a hug from this grandma in Michigan will you? Be safe out there, may many more remote places to ancho come your way.

Of course it was the bilge pump situation which caused the problem. If he had fixed that in time it wouldn't have affected the electrical system. What's the phrase? A stitch, in time, saves nine?

I spent a few days on the island of Paros about 1984. The community was very accommodating and pleasant. They had an election at the time which caused a town meeting to occur which went on for many hours in the evening and was such a refreshing experience from U.S. elections and discussions! One of the most fascinating experiences was to take a day to walk around the island (literally circumnavigate on land). It was nine or ten hours. Along the road were many memorials with mind-blowing dates from over a thousand years ago! What a great area to have existed in for the last few weeks! You could have done much worse!

Jordan and Des, Franny is designing our lithium system right now. This has been my fear of what happened to your family. We have gone from planning 24 to 12 to 48 and back to 24 volt again. I think we will have a spare battery if we need it, and we can limp along similarly like you were able to do with one battery. Fingers crossed. Second answer. When we had a house and a power outage, we had a fish tank to manage and a pond and fridge and freezer. Power outages are never good land or sea. I hope all goes well getting back to the US. Heidi

It may be worth investing in an Ecoflow Powerstation (other brands available) as a backup. You can plug it into your shore power connection and keep the systems running whilst trouble shooting any future issues. Their Delta 2 gives a 220v output of 1800W and it should be able to give you several hours of power.

Watching this video, I was reminded of a recent video I watched about the recent loss of the Theros and its crew in the North Atlantic. The Theros had been outfitted for travel without the use of fossil fuels. It used a battery pack from a Nissan Leaf, and those batteries have been suspected as the possible cause of a fire, which may have resulted in the loss of the Theros. Please be careful with those lithium-ion batteries, which, if damaged, may be prone to catching on fire. I really enjoy keeping up with Jared, Desiree, Isabella and Oso every week on their adventures. Be safe and well!

Prewords: This comment is not about Jordan and his beloved ones!!! With You Tube as my main source it seems to me, that there are not just some still out there, but an armada of newbies had come up last 5 years, and they become more and more every day. Many of them are much younger than this young father and so many of them start their circum-sailing with almost no experience but with much high-tech on board. I wonder, how those hardly 21 yrs old get started.

This video got me to wondering why you don't have a high water alarm in your bilge, especially since you have critical energy infrastructure within what seems to be an easily flooded area. My own bilge pump failure prompted me to mount a second float switch to the wall of the bilge at a level that would indicate bilge pump insufficiency. In my case this switch is integrated into my monitoring system so I get notified if bilge water is rising. I also get notified if my bilge pump runs for more than a few seconds. However, I don't live on my boat. You do, so an audible tone would be a very good, and cheap, investment.

Older panel so had to order it, takes 5 days. Had to run my 10kW generator for our house for all those days, then coordinate with the local power authority to be able to do the switch over with an electrician. Fun times! but I do feel for you guys. Keep it up and the great content!

Glad you were able to get everything back up and running! I know there's a trend towards electrifying everything on a boats, and I'm sorry to say it, but this is sorta why we haven't. We have chosen not to electrify the toilet, stove/oven, and we have a fresh water foot pump to access fresh water. In short (hehe, pun intended 😁), if our whole electrical system goes down, we can still eat, drink, and poop, making it far less of an emergency. It seems odd to me to be so risk averse, but then make the entire boat run on the one system with the most failure points and greatest fragility; electrical systems are by far the most failure prone thing on a boat, with the most number of connection points and a tendency to degrade quickly in salty/moist environments. I'm curious, did you hold some stuff back as manual: do you have a way to cook/drink/poop that's not reliant on the electrical system?

We've kept our boat there for several years, the marina is great and is also the cheapest on the south east coast of Spain, (with no loss in service). Your comments at 12 minutes. Where I live, just outside Chicago, if it rains hard for a day or two the basement can be flooded with sewer water from all that live in the area, happened 3 or 4 times. We solved the problem by installing a type of check valve in the sewer line but your waste flow is limited to the volume of the sewer pipe between the house and street until the sewerage reverts to normal flow. You can't flush the toilets or shower or do dishes, if you do it will back up but will be our waste in the basement. So yes, crazy things do happen to the regular homeowner and we have to be on guard. At 18:29 your comment reminded me of a friends comment about his honeymoon to Alaska. He and his bride took a small plane to a glacier. They were awed by the fact that the only sound was the wind. Sounds awfully close to what you are experiencing. I hear the interstate where I am. As they say KISS! Do you really need all the same conveniences as on land? If you can’t fix it yourself without phoning an expert? At least have a back up plan for when things go wrong. You didn’t really explain why the washing machine drained into the bilge. You should have separate batteries and completely separate systems for critical items. Ie one for radio / navigation lights etc. Then a house battery. I assume you have a big lead acid for starting the motor? So in fact you were not without power.

@antc5010 Месяц назад
Unless the grid goes down, most people's homes don't shut down completely with one incident. You did a great job identifying and fixing the problem. The cause was minor and the amount of water in the bilge not excessive, but your SV does seem vulnerable. With ocean sailing, it not too rare to take on blue water and in really rowdy conditions some water below or excess water in the bilge does happen. These are the conditions sailors least need a system shut down, so I would be thinking about improving onboard resilience.

We have similar walls in Croatia and they are there so the sheep don't eat all the grass at once (at to provide shade for the sheep)... And the only way to get to the earth so there WAS any grass was to pick up all the stones and put them somewhere else (on the walls)

Being in the same house for 35 years sort of makes it a member of the family. It is a periodic money drain, but not constant. Last week it was a 700 dollar garage refrigerator replacement, and three months ago an 800 dollar wash machine, but those were the first in a while. I would get a spare battery and maintain a percentage of charge on it to keep it healthy. Brain farts cause most manageable issues, but as we age, they become more frequent, and more difficult to deal with. Tech makes it both better and worse...

Try black licorice for sick tummy… some people hate it but I truly think it is a huge stomach calmer.

Water heater, AC units, Hail storm, Sump pump goes out, water leak, appliance dies.. these all turn your life in a house upside down... Doesn't matter where you "live". Disruptions happen. How you handle them and your attitude is what determines the severity!

Only saying this because I truly care, but please be careful letting Isabella play with chokable screws/objects. Only takes a second. I have 4 adult kids and have been through a slew of situations.... Some of them insane emergencies in remote/foreign areas, no bueno 🙏

I've had bad luck with bilge pumps with sensors instead of float switch, once the sensor gets dirty bilge water on it, it decides not to work, putting dawn in a buckets cleans it but eventually it gets dirty and fails, so I just switched my 4 pumps with float switches

So it's an all in one. Meaning it all works or none. You don't separate the systems? My smoke detectors, radios and lights, and engine are all stand alone systems. Yeah it cost more but it is safer.
