I SOLD Everything For ONE Watch

Three years ago I sold all of my watches to buy a Rolex Explorer 114270 in 36mm. It became my one watch collection for a year, cementing itself as the most worn, versatile one watch collection I can imagine. The Rolex Explorer has been banged up over the years, but it is the watch I'll never get rid of.

Great video. Bought NOS 1016 in 1990 and has been on my wrist 95% of time since then. it becomes a part of you …simplicity, durability, reliability, functionality …never worry about what I am doing or where I am at with it on. The Explorer 1 is best ever!

There is something cool about wearing just one watch. The watch gets a whole other meaning. And the 36mm Explorer is just so perfect. I do it the same with my old Sea Dweller. I stopped buying mid-tier watches just out of boredom and moved on to other hobbies.

As others have said, this is such a wholesome video and so appreciated by someone who isn’t into watch collecting per se (due to the cost), but more just has an appreciation of the specific emotions involved with specific pieces. I bought my first “real” watch when I moved permanently from Sydney, Australia, to northern Spain - a Speedmaster Professional sapphire sandwich that I’d wanted for a number of years. It will always be my first love and represent that change in my life. Yesterday, to mark the 6 year anniversary of having given up basically everything to move to the other side of the world, I was lucky enough to be able to collect my Explorer 124270: my second love, and the watch I passed on the buy the Speedmaster (it was the 114270 at that time). To be able to have both watches is a dream, and I can’t wait to create the kinds of memories you’ve created with yours, with mine. Thanks again for a great video mate. I’ve just subscribed.

I love the 114270. Bought mine early last year a few months prior to the 124270 being released. When the 124270 was released, I wanted to get that so badly and tried to find it at several stores. After owning the 114270 for over a year and having tried on the newest model, I honestly think I am fine with the 114270. It may have the jangly bracelet and lack of AR but it has a certain charm I enjoy. I wear it for days at at time because it's like that one pair of comfy jeans. Thanks for this video; I enjoyed it a lot. :)

The Explorer is a lovely watch, the only thing I would miss is having a date window. I bought myself a new 36mm Datejust 116234 back around 2001 and it was my daily wearer for many years until I got a Tudor North Flag. Both watches have all the marks of everyday use - scratches and dings which just adds to their character IMO. Been thinking of getting myself a Tudor Pelagos FXD lately to take over daily duties....yes I know it has no date window, but I think I love the look of it enough to live without knowing the date!

This is great in how you wove the watch in with your story of your life. These videos are always my favorite because anyone can just post a video about all the dimensions, post price etc and be done, but the stories like this make it *worthwhile* to listen to it. Subscribed to your channel my friend. Cheers. I received a TT vintage Daytona when I graduated from medical school, and was gifted it by my father. It has the old Zenith movement, and it has such a vintage flare. Hold it close to me given circumstances. Also my first big expense I got when I went out and made actual living I went and got a used Explorer I 39mm watch and wear it nearly all the time. It was the watch that reminded me I finally did something where I could get something such as that. Funny how watches remind us of memories and experiences.

All while In the back of my head knowing what I REALLY wanted is a Rolex Date Just . But could never "afford" it . With the amount of watches I've bought I could've funded a date just and have spare change . So now like you did I'm slowly selling each of my watches that I hold no emotional feeling towards so I can fund what I wanted in the first place! Thanks to this video I feel like it is achievable!

So many people get into watches and go absolutely hog-wild buying sub $500 pieces. They can justify it because despite spending thousands, they didn't feel the hit of a singular massive purchase. This was my journey too, but after a year or two you look at your collection and realize that its full of compromises and "itch-scratchers". A couple years ago I liquidated my entire collection and settled with a two piece set, my Tudor Black Bay and Nomos club. A little sport and a little dress. I think this whole rig-a-ma-role is just a natural part of entering the hobby and discovering what you love. The video was great - thanks for posting.

I really enjoyed your story. I'm not sure I could ever get down to one watch but I do toy with the idea of maybe a three watch collection at some point. I would love to have a 39mm Explorer but I just can't bring myself to pay the exorbitant prices that they are asking for them now. I refuse to pay 10,000+ for a 6,000 watch. If things ever settle out maybe I will pick one up. Also nice to see the scratches and scars on your watch. Mine look that way as well. They were made to be worn. For me there is nothing more annoying than people that buy a watch and don't wear it.

I did the reverse. I knew I wanted a 36mm Explorer (before they downsized it again) and every time I saw a watch which caught my eye that I liked and could afford (but didn’t love as much as the Explorer) I set that money aside. And did it again whenever I gave that second choice watch another glance. And before long, I had NOT bought enough alternative watches sufficient to finally get the Explorer. And it hasn’t left my wrist for several years. For all the reasons you listed here, I just can’t fall in love with anything else enough to make me wear it enough to justify it. I’ll take a glance at something new and think, “will I wear this instead of the Explorer, ever?” Probably not.

Enjoyed the video & great story. The Explorer is a fantastic piece & probably my favourite Rolex. I adore my 214270 39mm version (36 wears way too dainty for me) On another topic, each to their own, but I often see guys with like 20-30 low/mid tier watches and think surely they’d be better off buying just one/a few quality pieces for essentially the same money in the end. Part of me also envies that guy who has just that ONE watch. Something really cool about that. But I myself love so many different pieces & designs that a single watch wouldn’t work for me. That said, my goal now is to build a collection of about 10, centred around Grand Seiko, Omega, Tudor & Rolex only. And to save for the next, key piece rather than impulse buying along the way. All the best 👍

What a great timepiece 😍 Enjoyed the video! Quick question: what's that pulsating bulb/lamp on your desk?
@HarrisonElmore
@HarrisonElmore 2 года назад
It's a floating bulb. It's similar to the Flyte bulb, but this is by exekoml on Amazon

I adore my everyday 39mm Explorer, but will continue to work on obtaining a JLC Reverso and a Cartier Tank (or Santos). The classics are classic for a reason. Great video!

Just got my Explorer today. Over the moon about it. I’ve wanted it for over 10 years

I am just on the cusp of a similar decision to consolidate a bunch of watches I don’t wear to get an Explorer 1016 or this version. I’ve recently acquired a Sinn 556i that I wear now near daily and my speedie etc stay in the box. My watches have stories attached to them, but if I don’t wear them what’s the point? I love the idea of having a companion for ALL adventures.

I often think that one good watch is really all I need. An Explorer is a perfect example of one that would fill that need. 36mm Datejust is another consideration. But my issue is I have a few watches that have sentimental attachments. The Speedmaster is one (wore for the birth of my daughter), and I would very have a hard time parting with my Speedmaster regardless.
@HarrisonElmore

Perhaps a couple then at that point. A 36mm datejust is an excellent piece as well.

This is something I’ve been contemplating doing for a while and has come the the fore recently due to release off the new Blackbay pro from Tudor. I’ve handled this watch and it blew me away. I like the idea of having only a two or three watch collection in contrast to over 20, which I have now. It’s a big leap but your video has got me thinking it could be quite liberating and highly rewarding. Thanks for the video, really enjoyed it 👏

Well good luck! Three is my max these days that I'd consider. I never wore them enough when I had a dozen

It's very liberating. I recently went from a 9 watch collection to a 3 watch collection. Even sold my watch box for a 3 watch watch roll. It's so liberating that I'm contemplating going one step further and going down to 2 or 1 watch, it's just hard deciding what to let go. At 3 watches I have a dress piece, a diver and a moonwatch.

It’s funny how this entire video is about the explorer being a one watch collection but right at the end he says next week I’ll Be comparing “my” black bay to the Pelagos haha, either way, keep up the great work, it was a good video

I did a very similar thing with my collection. I did it for a 2019 36mm Datejust. No regrets. And I too got greedy and bought another couple of watches since. 36mm in a Rolex is a sublime thing. Hard to describe and best experienced. The Explorer is a lovely simple device.

I have a large wrisk. I don’t mind a small dress watch. But a small sport watch just looks diminutive on my wrist.

Thanks for sharing your feelings and thoughts. It is a great timepiece! I'm not a Rolex Fanboy, however, the Explorer II 16570 White, 40mm does it for me. It is just overpriced at this point.

I sold my Breitling Navitimer and Tudor Harrods to get the 114270 from 2007 without Rehaut but massiven Endlinks in my collection. And yes, you are right, this tiny little Rolex is all you need. It is definitely a keeper! Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this watch.

The first “luxury” watch I bought was the Speedmaster Reduced (2002), first savings from first job. Goldilocks size for 6.75 inch wrist. I visited the AD countless times before I could buy it. Wore it for 8 years straight, and then the much lusted after Rolex Explorer (2009). A few years later the Explorer II (2011). A few pieces in between (mostly sold now) Tag Heuer Carrera 39mm, Longines Master Collection Moonphase 40, Sinn 356, Christopher Ward C60, and a few microbrands. The BB58 (2019), spot on proportions. And the new Speedmaster Pro 3861 (2021) that finally wears great on smaller wrists. There is also the Rolex Submariner 16610 from 2010 (the pride of the collection, along with the Explorer II and the Speedmaster Pro, all 10/10 wrist presence satisfaction) bought in 2020, but that is another story.

@@HarrisonElmore from all the watches I have, the Explorer II 16570 wears the greatest, granted by a nose. It’s slim and inconspicuous like the Explorer, exact same bracelet, but the 39mm diameter and larger bezel give it that additional wrist presence satisfaction.
