Curious to see if the Mav can hold up. I'd like to see a 5 year review on it in the future. The Tacoma is much more expensive but it's a damn good truck. You get what you pay for

You forgot to mention that its 20-40% more expensive, horrible mpg. And no tech inside. Basic and cheapest Ford Maverick have Carplay, and you can Start / Stop it from your cellphone. As well as it's way more comfortable than tacoma inside. Will it last longer than Tacoma? I am sure not. But who cares, you will sell it in 5 years or so either way. Also Hybrid engines, have way longer lifespan than gas.

Puzz, I ordered an SR5 double cab Tacoma after wanting a AWD XLt luxury/4K tow maverick. The Tacoma was 14% more and will probably last at least twice as long. That alone negates and fuel or initial cost savings the maverick has. Currently in a 5.0 F-150.

That Ford will be low mileage in five years because a lot of the time will be spent behind a tow truck or at the shop.

Long time viewer. I am very interested in your future reviews, specifically how comfortable the back seat is for adults on road trips. I drive a Ford C-MAX and the Maverick is basically it's replacement. 122k miles on it so far and no major issues. Lifetime average of 39.6mpg. Live in Minnesota and use dedicated snow tires and stick to the pavement. No issues with snow and ice. Btw, I can fit a full suspension medium size bike in the CMAX without taking wheels off or moving the front seats. Wife has an older RAV4 v6 AWD which we run snow tires on in winter also. Those tires make a huge difference. Love the reliability at 155k miles, but wish for better gas mileage.

Thank you for making this video!!!!!!!! My story is surprisingly similar. I've had my 2007 Taco for 12 years. It is a good truck and mostly very dependable. I had a 2002 Dodge Ram Quadcab (which is far more comfortable). Unreasonably maybe I expected much better mpg for a much smaller truck with a 6-speed. 18mpg instead of 14mpg was disappointing. Four years ago I bought a used 2014 Chevy Volt which sometimes gets infinity MPG but is hard to fit my road bike into. The Volt PHEV has been incredible dependable (even better than the Taco!) so I was ready for a hybrid truck (I'm keeping the Volt!). I waited for years for Honda to make a hybrid Ridgeline- years. When Ford announced the Maverick I waited for Honda to respond. They didn't (but they will- they'll have to) so last Nov I ordered my Maverick. I have to have cruise and remote mirrors so I had to get the XLT. I also added the lane assist, spray-in bed liner and a trailer hitch. Including the Dealer $$$$ charges it's like $25.5K all in. So, it's been 7 months so I reckon I have 2 more months to go. I'll sell the Taco next month and hopefully get the truck for my birthday. I'll be 66 and have never owned a new vehicle- I'm too cheap. This little truck makes sense to my stingy self! Ford finally made the Ridgeline I wanted! It's going to be white. I'm going to name it Goose. Thanks again for the video!

Now I have 4500 miles on it and I love every second driving behind the wheel of that thing! I do archaeology for a living and it's been perfect for what I do in my career. I literally did the same thing. I had a Magnetic Grey Toyota Tacoma just like you but the SR5 short-bed with no options that I traded in for my pre-ordered Ford Maverick Lariat. First time ordering a vehicle and as a result, I was able to spec it exactly how I wanted it with no compromises. It suits my needs just fine. It goes to show that bigger is not better. A compact truck is just as capable and practical as a mid-size or full-size that will never get put to its full potential. The added benefit is a nicer ride with great driving dynamics and ease of parking. You forget there's a bed in the back because it drives so car-like. Plus it's good-looking. It doesn't look like anything else on the road so gawking eyes are guaranteed.

Honest assessment of your personal needs when it comes to a vehicle. Many people buy way more vehicle than they need-however, if we all bought what we needed, we would all be driving EVs or hybrids, so no need to beat yourself up too much for buying a fun truck in the past. I was in the same boat with a Jeep Wrangler-realized that in the five years we owned it, we used 4WD about 2x a year and 4WD LO once-much better served with a Forester. Now that we needed the cargo capacity of a truck again, I just went with enough creature comfort with a crew cab and 2WD. Utility, simplicity, and 23 mpg from a 3.8 V6-I’ll take the small fuel economy trade off for the towing ability we occasionally need.

Great review with realistic expectations and understanding of personal needs. It's much the same reasons I'll be parting with by Ram 1500. Gas mileage is still the best of any full-sides truck I've owned, but it's a lot more truck than I need, and still more expensive to operate now than when I bought it. The Maverick can do everything I bought my truck for, and do it for less while probably being more fun to drive and easier to get in/out of. It will certainly be easier to clean a foot of snow off of on a winter morning, or evening leaving work. It probably won't plow through 2 feet of drifted snow as easily, but that's also not an everyday event either.

The only open question I have about it is how well it will haul our tandem. By tape measure, with the front wheel off and using a fork mount a 6 x 6 on that forward bed slot, the rear wheel should be sitting right at the end of the tailgate, so we'll see what happens...I may have to get a little creative.

Good review man. I do wish people would fully show and compare the front and rear leg and head room against the Tacoma. They always just jump in for 5 seconds and say it's good but don't elaborate on their height and take the time to show and measure the space in front of and above them. We know the back seat room is bigger in the Maverick but by how much exactly? Like in a Tacoma, someone 6' tall is about the max, then your head starts touching the headliner. What's the max in the Maverick? Also, could you elaborate on the difference in road noise? It sounds like your Tacoma was lifted with beefier tires so this might not be a fair comparison but still.... I've had three Tacomas including two 3rd gens and they're great. Value retention isn't just the best of any truck, it might be the best of ANY vehicle. The main issue to me really is the rear seat space if you need to fit people over 6' tall back there. There's also more affordable models besides the TRDs you usually see. Most people will never even use the rear locker anyways. I got an SR, debadged it and put $1,800 worth of TRD pro wheels and slightly larger AT tires on it. People ask me all the time if it's a Pro and think I spent like $50-60k on it. I tell them it's an SR, not even and SR5! The SR double cab 4x4 V6 is one of THE best truck deals out there right now. They even upgraded some more of the basic equipment on it recently. It's well equipped. For someone who doesn't need or want the offroad ability or 4wd, the Maverick is a stellar deal though. I'd like to just check one out and get a test drive but they're impossible to find on the lot! I bet in a couple years, they'll have a plug-in hybrid AWD that can do 40 miles AND a full EV AWD version. If they're still affordable, I may have to get one.

For sure 95% of most truck users don't need a 'full size truck'. The realistic need for those is rarely. Sure - a few people use the crap out of a truck. For some things, you NEED that sort of towing capacity. But for most people who look at it honestly... You don't. Vehicles like the Maverick provide a good mix of mileage and utility while at a great cost savings. I hope people can lose the ego and look at what is probably better for their use case. As a fellow Tacoma owner, I find myself in a similar situation as you my friend, Glad I found your video. I really do like my Tacoma (and Toyotas in general) however, had the Ford Maverick been available just a few years earlier, the Maverick probably would have been my choice instead of the Tacoma. I think the Maverick would fit my needs better than the Tacoma. I mostly use my truck for commuting, light hauling, and light off-roading so don't really need all of the capability the Tacoma has to offer. Especially with recent gas prices, the argument to trade my truck for something more fuel-efficient has been more convincing than ever. Still, I am hesitant to trade in my vehicle right now since the Maverick is still so new and the Tacoma is a proven reliable vehicle. Maybe I should wait until my truck is paid off, as I only have less than $10K left until its paid off?
@4drcanyonracer
@4drcanyonracer 2 года назад
Do yourself a favor and look up the prices of similar used Tacomas to yours. The prices are insane! I sold my used 2018 last fall with 50,000 miles on it, for more than I bought it for. If I include the tax and title costs, I only lost $1,000. I then turned around and bought a new 2022. Total cost to swap was barely anything. Just order a Maverick so you aren't paying any BS added dealer markup.
@Honeybadger_525
@Honeybadger_525 2 года назад
@@4drcanyonracer I did look up the value. If Kelly Blue Book and Edmunds are to be believed, I would at least break even trading in my Tacoma right now as is. I agree ordering directly from Ford would be the way to go. My hesitancy is mainly revolved around the fact that the Maverick is so new that it hasn't really been tested to the same length as the Toyota. I would really love to have a hybrid pickup for the gas mileage, but you can only get front-wheel drive hybrids with the Maverick currently. I would prefer to have the AWD version (which is still better on gas than my Tacoma). My intuition tells me that better things are coming to the vehicle market in a few years, so I might be better off waiting just a bit longer unless something significant in life changes that pushes me to trade in my current vehicle sooner?

I have a 2020 Tacoma and had I known the fuel economy was going to be THIS BAD I would not have purchased it. I get 16 - 17 MPG regularly, 18 if I am lucky. It's a TRD Sport model, which has very road-friendly tires. I don't get why it's so terrible on fuel. I had a full-size 2015 Silverado and it actually faired slightly better and it was a much more capable truck. I like the Hybrid Maverick, I do however live in Minnesota and would appreciate all-wheel drive. I do know that with good dedicated winter tires any front-wheel drive vehicle does awesome, so I guess if I had to I could go without AWD. In 5 years (assuming he still has it) the gas savings alone is superior and offsetting any maintenance fix or repairs after warranty if/when time comes. I average 16 mpg in my vehicles over the last 5 years and currently spend $350 a month /$4,200 a year on gas. The hybrid would pay for itself in 5 years just in gas savings for me personally. So I plan on daily driving a Maverick that can do 90% of everything I need, but only not capable of towing my side by side... possibly? Yes of course you can opt in for the turbo 4k towing model, but we're talking about fuel economy and practicality for those who don't work with actual full size truck needs. The maverick is not going to replace mid/full size truxks, but I'm sure it will do 80%+ of what truck lovers need. It's small, not going to win any style awards but will become a new trendsetter and worthy machine. I've been waiting on order for 6 months, if I love it that much by the time they make a hybrid AWD 4k tow'er, I may swap it out!

Nice thoughtful discussion. I had a 90's era Taco and loved it but the new ones are much bigger, get worse gas mileage, and are too expensive for what you get IMO. Fingers crossed Ford eventually makes an EV truck similar to the Maverick. I do wish the Maverick Hybrid was offered in AWD, even eAWD like the RAV4 Prime would be sufficient when AWD (or chains) is legally required on snow covered roads in my hood. I also wish it had a mid-gate opening so you could slide the occasional 2x4, skis, or legs (when you are sleeping) into the cab.

I'm still debating this as my lease is up in a couple of years, and honestly, after making a historic log of stuff I have done with my trucks since 2008, I do way less truck stuff. I recently got a 6' bed Access Cab Tacoma which I love but honestly, it may be more truck than I even actually need. I think that's why this market is taking off, that and gas prices, and actual use realities are coming home to roost in a world where we have found a solution. Just like Huskies and GOT, I'll bet there's a lot of buyers remorse for big trucks out there. I watch Yellowstone, but I don't own a ranch. lol. I am holding out to see what the Stout looks like. The Santa Cruz looks a little too card carrying coastal for me, the Midwest in me loving a truck feel. The Maverick delivers that, and as I see them driving around, they are growing on me. Also, I understand resale value but if I can pay off my truck sooner and have money again, resale value is only if you want to constantly flip. I'm not entirely sure as of yet how the jury will rule on these long term. I have no doubt my Tacoma will be stellar at 100k. At my local repair shop I've seen blown Ford engines at 60k. That's a huge issue for a $45k plus truck. I like Toyota, and I've had a few, and I know the long term reliability...but I'm not a fanboy. However, a truck at half the cost is kind of a no brainer if you are testing the waters with ownership. If you want to keep your truck forever and ever, yes, I'd suggest getting something a bit more reliable, long term. Which we cannot say...we don't know yet. I do know that the average person only keeps a vehicle 6 years today, and I'd say that may be even less...

This is the best Tacoma ad I’ve ever seen! I didn’t know the Tacoma was a full-fledged truck with four-wheel-drive and a high clearance with Toyota reliability.

I recommend getting one set of dedicated snow tires, and one set of dedicated summer tires.

That's what I hear works best - but luckily I don't drive much in the snow!

They say that the gas tank is really small that was one of the complaints about it but I'm thinking of doing the same.

Just to summarize your video for you the maverick is NOT a truck it's a suv with a bed Trucks are defined by the weight carrying capacity , tow limit and utilization The maverick doesn't have Any of those It's basically like the Honda ridgeline/pilot Not really suitable for those conditions and size wise not really utilizable for other uses However it is nice for like daily driver and basic uses like picking up groceries and light supplies

I owned three Ford vehicles, never again. My Toyota PU is 29 years old and my vehicle is 13 years old. No major problems. Never stop running.
