I Sold The Oldest Car I Own & Bought A 996 Porsche 911 Carrera That Wasn't Supposed To Be A Project

I make a LOT of decisions every day, and on average I think they're good. That means that some are bound to backfire.
After careful contemplation and a VERY persistent local buyer, I sold my 1980 Mazda 626 because, well, I don't drive it and it needs to be driven. I also found something else that I would drive. A 996 Porsche 911 Carrera that checked the boxes I need to own a car like this. Uncommon color, manual transmission, factory LSD, and seemingly priced right.
This car was recently gone through and I knew it needed a few tidily bits and some things I wanted to do to the car as well. Well, as you'll see... this didn't really go as planned.
Its a 24 year old German car. I should know better.
Hope you all enjoyed this video, you can expect some weekly updates on my fleet and of course my regularly scheduled Saturday evening teardowns.
As Always, I appreciate all the comments, feedback and even the criticism.
Catch you on the next one!
-Eric

That can be said for every Porsche. On the other hand, Porsches are fabulously reliable cars. I’ve owned them from 1983, done almost all the maintenance, and it has been way more pleasure than pain.

i'm a glass half full guy so it's 5000 waiting to happen :) mine is a 2000 i would never sell that i have owned since almost new an since i retired in 2012 daily driver , it's much cheaper than the crap they sell today , check out how much it is to change the plugs or a waterpump on a hemi or how much coils are for an ls or having to do the cam in an ls because of the shutting cylinders off thingy ect... on top of normal brakes ,oil,shocks an cliches that pop up , biggest problem with porsches is they sit in a garage , who cares if a headlight don't work or a turn signal , no cop will pull you over for that because they know it's going to court with the best lawyer in the area an they probably be sued for reckless endangerment for pulling you over in the first place , just drive an be Happy life is short :)

Really sorry to hear that things turned out this way for the Porsche. I am new to your channel, but my respect for how you do things is climbing. I too have way too many vehicles and way too many projects, and unfortunately, there is only one way to do things, The Right Way. Which has created a ton of work for me over the years. Thats a sweet Carrera, and I always think there is more pride in ownership for something you have some time invested in. Anyone can buy one that is right. Very few can or will take something and make it right. For that, I offer a greasy knuckle bump and wish you the best in the cars transformation.

Another fantastic video, I have made plans to come down on June 5. I cant wait to see some of your vehicle inventory in person. You fix cars, you tear up cars, you buy cars, you sell cars, you buy car parts, you sell car parts, and you even re-home cars that you just simply don't have time for anymore. You are cars. Absolutely great.

Better than the old 911 that a guy I knew bought. Bought it, drove it for about a year (over 100mph a few times) before he took it in for maintenance. The first thing they noticed was that the suspension had rusted out and was repaired by welding on re-bar to reinforce it. Over 100 mph on that suspension. He's lucky to be alive.

As always, a great video, and I am just awed by your ability to run your commentary in what seems to be a dialogue with each one of us. That, my friend, is amazing. Now, as to the car and the issues, puts me in mind of my grandfather's 1934 Dodge four-door...back in the day, of course...which I had high hopes of first, getting running and then dropping a '57 Ford 312 (dual quads) in it. Never happened...I sold it. Now, I sublimate watching you and occasionally repairing a fountain pen. Keep the Porsche, it will all come together! And know everyone who watches you appreciate what you do and your great attitude toward your passion. Thank you for sharing!

I was a foreign car mechanic for over 30 years. People used to ask "are Porsche's good cars"? My answer was always the same, "they are great cars, I made a fortune fixing them"! Porsche's and most imported cars are not good for "tinkerers" or DIY's. It appears this yellow nightmare has had very inexperienced hands on it. The more you look, the more you are going to find. Congrats, you bought a project car! Best advice I can offer - Run Forest run!

NEVER....EVER....Believe anyone when a seller says "I just finished this project, maybe it needs a couple of small things." That's sentence usually means "I ran out of money, patience, skill, but mostly money, patience and skill...I need to find a chump to offload this heap." It also means "$5,000...minimum" with a car like this for the next guy. Please, keep doing these projects, it's therapeutic for you and teaches lessons to us. The 911 is nice but just beware of one issue that has been a major concern(besides IMS) for 911 (1999-2008). Bore scoring. Piston slap causing wear in the bore and eventual oil burning and rebuild. If it sounds like a valve tick, it might be bore score. It seems to affect 5-10% of the cars. Causes have been stated to be incorrect oil blend, ethanol fuel(rich warmup, causing blow by through piston rings). I’ve heard it’s mostly from northern cars(colder climate), and piston bore coatings not Durable as before (Nikasil). Check piston bores from the bottom, since that’s where it generally begins (usually piston #6).
@miketdavies
@miketdavies 2 года назад
99 3.4L doesn't have bore scoring issues. Even the IMS is likely OK as it's the dual row bearing. (Says the guy with a 3.6 overbored to 4.0 after a bore score failure, and showing bore scoring signs on cyl6 on the Nikasil LN overbore... FML)

Love the video man, a tip for any future work on this particular car though, 911s are MUCH safer being lifted backwards given the very heavy rear weight bias they have. I've seen horror stories of these tipping backwards off the lift arms when lifted "normally". Even my 987 which is mid engine with much less rear bias still felt uneasy on my lift when I lifted it forward the first time.
