I pay a LOT to my handyman. He has multiple skills ( carpentry, painting, electrical, plumbing, etc. ) is honest and shows up on time. I get this too, except my issue is going on as I'm building my skills. I keep hearing things like "That's a huge risk" "You shouldn't do it" etc. I'm not gonna list them all here cause this would ramble on forever. Now I'm in my 30's so I'm a little late to the game but I'm not letting that stop me, and I'm obviously not going to jump ship from my regular job until I get the money rolling in. But I think this whole thing comes from the fact that the average American is used to the same old worn out routine of getting up and working for some boss you hate in some soul crushing job where you moving up is based on how many a$$ you kiss. Scraping and crawling for crumbs, feeling miserable all the while. This kid is smarter than i was at 25, so he can go out and get his. He should use all the negativity he receives as fuel to the fire and be even more determined to be successful. I would say "jam his success down their throats'" but that's not exactly mature, just laugh your way to the bank kid.

The caller is running into misconceptions by people around him. Has he told them he’s making twice as much as he did with his previous employer? 1994 was the only year that I had my solo lawn service full time. I remember one day in church people congratulating me and talking to me like I was rich and making a lot of money. Truth was that I was barely keeping up with my bills even with a $300 a month apartment and an inexpensive storage garage for my lawn equipment. I think I told at least one of the people congratulating me “no, I’m barely keeping up with my bills as I have lots of competition in this town”. I moved away the next year.

I don't see the issues either. It should be noted his previous employer paid him half what he is making now maybe because he didn't have the same experience at the time.

People overvalue false "stability" (often just the illusion of stability).

The “working for someone else is safer” mentality is from people who don’t trust themselves to work when they don’t have to. As an entrepreneur, your outcomes are paid for, not your time. Employees are paid for their time and loyalty. You can have a variance in quality and outcomes and get paid the same as an employee. Entrepreneurs will work until they are financially free, and then continue working because they love what they do. Employees will work until they are financially free and for the most part retire from work after that.

Never share everything with your family and friends, especiallly how much you make. Also, do what you love, the money will come.

Sounds like the family don't want you to do better then them. And your old job wants you back because you are s good worker and the rest are slackers. Push hard and keep following your dream, no one else will dream for you..and one advice from me it's learned to say NO.

Dave’s right. You can’t get people to show up to do the job.

I worked at large retail for over 30 years and the pay was not great but people worked there because it was "stable" work and the schedule worked with family life. They started restructuring around 10 years ago . They started with the district level and combined a lot of jobs then it was instore office staff and then department managers and assistant managers. The jobs that they eliminated were jobs that people had worked up to and thought were essential to the company but guess what they were not. One day you have a job next day you are told that job is eliminated and you have to find another position and apply for it or you are out. As for the schedule that was taunted as being flexible it is basically that if you want full time you have to be able to work any time on any day.
