I stay in a signal box, with trains passing feet from my window. Corrour station, Scotland.

One year after visiting Corrour, I return, to stay in the signal box, located on the platform of Corrour railway station. I set myself a challenge of capturing all passing trains over my 24 hour stay.

I spent a night actually in the signal box for a tenner, it was nearly 30 years ago after it stopped being a functioning signal box and it was run as a bunk house then, the station house didn't have a cafe then but it did have a small shop that also sold cans of beer. I didn't get the train there but walked from Dalwinnie on a four-day walk to Fort William. The Youth hostel at Loch Ossian would have been my usual digs when in the area but I wanted to try the signal box, although the youth hostel is modernised now and upgraded with solar and wind turbine back then it only had a small turbine that could only run a few light bulbs and a water pump that was backed up by a hand pump, the guy who ran the Youth Hostal then was a Yorkshire man called Tom who befriended a stag that had the biggest headset I've seen and it would come inside the hostel to be fed it had to angle it headset from side to side to get in through the vestibule entrance. Feeding deer is frowned upon these days.

Masterpiece mate. Best Corrour video I’ve seen by far. It got me thinking what it would be like to be the train driver at night! Oh and I think I’d have stolen the mug, wouldn’t be able to resist.
@PlanesTrainsEverything
@PlanesTrainsEverything Месяц назад
To be honest, the vanishing mug idea crossed my mind as well. At £180 a night they could afford it, but as they were for sale in the shop, I thought it a poor show to pinch one. I did discover where they stored their wee bars of scented soap (not the big type I got you.. sorry got Alicja), but seriously small ones, so grabbed a handful of them... and a couple of cans of Irn Bru for later.

I recently had a similar kind of experience here in NZ. I stayed in a turn of the century converted train carriage directly under a railway viaduct in Picton.The 4am freight train wake up call was so thunderously loud, screeching metal, sparks, you couldn't hear yourself over the noise, what a sight, so cool!

Your rendezvous with Steve Marsh was a lovely touch. You had forgone your fish & chips but you still went and bought your mate a gift ! As he says, 'what a legend'. Oh my, yet another bucket list thing to do. All these special places to stay at are going to overtake my years left ! I think possibly the station house stay in north of England might be the one stayed in by G Loves Trains in her video "I stayed at a Station". Might not be it but still that is a good video to watch anyway.

Everybody saying its overpriced clearly doesnt appreciate the experience. 1. Your paying for the novelty of staying in a signal box 2. Your paying to stay in the beautiful remote highlands 3. The cost of maintaining that signal box will be insane especially when its so close to the railway line, i suspect network rail are quite strict with them on maintaining the buildings. 4. Its not a premier inn!!!!! Its a premium product and you are paying for the experience.

The Taylor's coffee bags are brilliant & are one of the first things I put in my travel kit, when going out & about. (Just be careful of the Hot Lava Java version - You will be stratospheric instead of cruising altitude with those) They are made by the same company that produces Yorkshire Tea, so they have plenty of experience with making "bagged" hot drinks.

It is. Years ago it was a request stop only due to limited patronage and the estate tracks were in bad shape. Now it's the busiest station on the line outside of the termini. The estate and staff have done a great job with it don't get off a Corrour expecting to be on your own anymore 😂. The moor is big though and it doesn't take long for folks to disperse.

You had me at "accessible by foot, bicycle, or train, only." So bleak and empty, and so beautiful at the same time. Gorgeous country, and a fascinating location within it - how did a station end up there in the middle of nowhere? Great video, you should get commission from the tourist authorities, because I have the sudden urge to visit remote Scotland on the far side of the planet.

I stayed with some friends at Loch Ossian hostel 40 years ago. It was a bit more minimalist than the room you stayed in. After a couple of nights there, we walked to Glen Nevis hostel. It was a beautiful walk, but I remember that it was difficult to cross the river near Liubielt. Looking at the current OS map, it looks as if you wouldn't have to cross the river now, because there's a path shown on both sides of the river. I don't remember the paths being particularly boggy, but we were there in the summer, and we were lucky that the weather was pretty dry.
