People been asking all week so I guess we gotta talk about it. VF5US is free on PS+, so if you're even slightly interested please give it a try.
0:00 Why is criticism of the game's features always taken as an attack on the scene?
7:08 Waiting to see people's experiences
8:52 Seems like it's just delay with connections being routed through relay nodes. (the speed of the game and the buffer window probably make it harder to notice)
15:20 Somehow important functionality keeps getting neglected. Why do we have to tell them; shouldn't they already know?

The issue is that a lot of people are insecure about the things they like and feel like they aren't allowed to like things that are publicly considered "bad." But on the internet things are either perfect or garbage. So whenever they see cristism about the things they like, they perceive it as an attack and get all defensive, because in their head they are not allowed to like something that is considered bad. They feel the need to justify their own enjoyment and happiness.

Unfortunately this is one of the big downsides of the internet. In groups, opinions and feelings tend to get magnified out of proportion. The internet multiplies this by 100, and it seems to have given people some kinda PTSD or something. Middle ground and nuance is lost in something that often times looks like virtual group think. You have something that just metastasizes, like a cancer, into a cluster of vitriol.

I wrote an entire research paper on this phenomena and the history of it back to the Industrial Revolution. A huge part of it came down to how people who aren't able to do creative work will internalize external sources as part of their identity and then any criticism of it is criticism of them. It's only become worse in the last decade since I wrote the paper.

It is, but it's a standard package for years. In many games you aren't allowed to criticize any aspect of the game as a commentator. If you watch tournaments and competitions of bigger games, you see awkward pauses when some glitch happens or something blatantly bad balance-wise pops up during matches etc, because commentators get this brain fart for a couple of seconds where they know they can't describe what's going on anymore in an honest way, yet they need to keep commentating. It was very perceivable with Overwatch, for example, whenever there's a bug, you don't hear anything near "oh, the bug got them, unfortunate for the team A".

It's actually interesting to me how much better Americans have done in this arena than the Japanese. When Quake's online was being developed, Carmack had a "vision" of basically having the entire game run on the server and the clients just sent commands to the server, meaning the whole game was authoritative to the server. The problem was, once used in the real world and not his magic god tier connection, he immediately recognized that was not going to work and so they developed predictive technologies for FPS. Rollback is literally the same thing, but applied to a different genre. FPS have many more netcode techniques that have been developed to make the experience smoother, but for fighting games devs just gave up and figured "we have a little deterministic simulation so just send the inputs and call it a day." As to how everybody doesn't agree that the lack of engineering on this is ridiculous astounds me. It's a hard problem to solve and improve on, but it's only hard from the "thinking about ways to solve the problem." The actual engineering isn't something that requires a team of 100's or anything like that. If you have one or two engineers focusing on it they can come up with a plethora of solutions. Almost all these netcode advances in games were largely made by 10 or so people. Getting it to the super advanced point it's at now was a lot more than that, but fighting games haven't all even reached the optimization stage yet like this...
@kissconsider
@kissconsider 3 года назад
It's because in general the japanese are pretty conservative when it comes to technology adaptation. They also historically have been more likely to rely on in-house tools over on-the-market solutions. Maybe due to the lack of translations, maybe because they still value arcades more, or maybe its just money pinching, but the adoption of clean, accurate rollback netcode is still in a transitional phase
@doolioart3314
@doolioart3314 3 года назад
Exactly. I played q1 and q2 with delay, quakeworld removed moving delay, but didn't remove shooting delay, q3 made more advances and somewhere about 20 years ago, we had full prediction netcode. Now, sure, by then, fighting games haven't really left the arcades yet and pc and online gaming was still on the rise. However, TWO DECADES (I had to capitalize this lol) later, we're still discussing this lol. Imagine having a game with insert coin mechanics on your machine at home. Or something like that. And this is just a part of a larger issue, which is extreme complacency seen with a subsection of players who mostly exclusively play fighting games. It's as if time stopped some 25 years ago and Capcom, Namco and the rest didn't grow into corporations and their games didn't grow into full AAA products and their profits didn't grow as well and there were no technological advancements in the meantime and video game industry standards. Harada is still based when he tells you off by saying Tekken is 3, mandatory player base-splitting standalone expansions are still a thing with some titles, menu structure, loading times, options, control options etc. are about the same as they were 15 years ago and so on and so forth. And that's not even a "fg boomer" thing, my first fighting game was International Karate and sf2ww was one of my most played games in my life. Still, that doesn't mean that I should be fine with buying a fully priced mid class car that doesn't have electric windows and central lock. I'm not from Mars lol
@pinkfloyd36123
@pinkfloyd36123 3 года назад
thank you, i was just about to comment something similar. people act like rollback is this new and bold thing and we need to be patient but japanese fighting games are literally 20+ years behind the industry standard. when carmack figured it out it didn't take years for other fps games to adapt, they just straight up copied him because the problem had been solved.

My girlfriend listens to me rant about fighting game netcode more than any normal human being should, but after talking to her about VF she brought up an amazing point. "It is 2021 and net play is one of the only viable options to play right now, why wouldn't you want to invest in the best online to keep the players that WANT to play your game?" A lot of fighting games struggle from having small player bases, but with rollback you can at least have the benefit of knowing your games will still be playable, even if you're from Arizona playing someone in Germany. Nothing will ever be as good as offline imo, but rollback gets really damn close.

While I agree rollback is a necessary change and needs to become standard, I never understood the need for offline fighting players strive for. I get that it's a different game because frames are really important but then again, does it impact so badly the "fun" that can be had in a game? I personally am an advocate for rollback, I wont play games that have notoriously bad netcode and I play games that have rollback BUT it doesnt mean I do not understand where companies come from when they decide not to include it. I think delay netcode if improved could be a good bridge for companies to traverse before getting to rollback or small companies to fall on if they just dont have the resources to add it. I still dont think netcode should be discouraged as much as it is in the FGC, it's sad because lag is such a normal occurence with the same effects in any competitive game. Diminishing delay is key but games need to be supported if they attempt improvement or cannot afford rollback yet.

That's why I was disappointed by the creation of those two "fronts". I thought we finished the rollback discussion a year ago. Not to mention that we should have finished it about a decade ago, which adds to the notion. But, now, we have pushback against good netcode and features (and yes, I will call that "pushback against good netcode" because there's no nuance there, rollback is, for now, the best netcode archetype or whatever we should all it and should be standard in all titles) because people confuse that with something else, mainly with attacks on the IP they like or their scene or whatever. Which is completely absurd. If you love an IP, you should be MORE pissed if its creators are failing to present a proper product. As I said to Art on Twitter, loving an IP and being an IP addict isn't the same. Lastly, I've been called a rollback activist, which is a new one:D While this is funny, I have to circle back to the disappointing part, the pendulum swing that should never had happened. It's like, fg devs refused to implement bunch of basic features in their games for long enough time and we've been vocal about it, only to be met with "you're getting boring" from a significant part of the player base. Which is insane, as if better products don't benefit all players.

@@alvinmercado6305 That's the nature of games, some get popular and some don't. As Sajam says in this video, having rollback doesn't make a game automatically interesting or fun to play (and he doesn't just stick with games on the basis of them having rollback). But it does mean that a massive barrier to entry (of having to worry about the basic play experience) is removed just by having rollback. Regardless, as you say all fighting games should have rollback as a basic QoL feature. Which yes, makes it a deal breaker if a game doesn't include it, because having functional online play for everybody has become a core part of the fighting game experience. Not sure I understand how someone could simultaneously hold the view that "all games should have it" and "it's not that big a deal".

It was definitely a bad idea for Sega to not add rollback (although the "absorb" netcode seems to be decent so far) but I actually have seen people going out of their way to hate on VF. I don't mean valid criticism, I mean actually trying to make people feel bad for being excited about the game. There's a lot of weird hate in the comments of older VF videos too, mostly Tekken players acting like they're fighting a just cause defending their imagined rivalry. I don't know what it is about VF that makes these people so mad and cynical

This EXACTLY. I've seen tons of hate and toxicity from TEKKEN players specifically, not really anyone else. Any video dealing with VF always has at least a few Tekken fanboys in the comments trying to shit on the game, and this stuff has been going on for YEARS at this point, way before this new version of VF5 even came out. It's weird man. It's like they feel threatened by it or something. Maybe i'm biased as a VF fan, but i've honestly never ever see any VF players doing that to Tekken. I even saw a video of a Tekken player calling out other members of their community about it.
@Ltp1305
@Ltp1305 3 года назад
One big issue is that if all the talk doesn't translate to sales and player-base popularity, it's not gonna work Like, you can shit on SF and Tekken netcode all day, but if you are still buying, playing, and streaming it, then that mean you accept the game for what it is Also, another big issue is that Rollback is not gonna guarantee a games success when the community itself still plays on legacy franchises / established brand regardless of quality. Which is why ASW's attempt to actually implement rollback to Strive is an outline, not the norm

I think there's a certain amount of fear involved honestly. They probably know the netcode's not the best. I googled a virtua fighter reddit and the top pinned post was how to ask for rollback. But they also are afraid that they might lose a chance at Virtua Fighter coming back. I think the hope might be for VF6 to have rollback, but are worried there won't be a VF6 if VF5US doesn't succeed. They fear the Darkstalkers problem. It's also worth noting how not everybody plays a ton of different games. For some people if their favorite series stops, then fighting games have stopped. They just don't get joy from other fighters.

Being mean doesn't help, but I doubt people are being mean as a strategy, they're just pissed. And what we're dealing with in this genre is completely mind boggling regarding how much it drags behind the industry standards (even if the industry is rotten and its standards are usually pretty low anyways). In other words, would it be ok to be mean if a game releases without rollback in 2040? I get what you're saying, but I can't be overly critical towards people who are snapping, the genre is lagging behind even up to 20 years with some features. That's a bit too much.

It’s interesting how fast a lot of East & West Coast Americans turned into Japanese players (or more like Japanese devs, really) when their connection was reliably fine to good. It very quickly turned into ”well, it’s good enough for me over here, so people should apologize for being such assholes about shitting on the game for not having rollback. Yeah, rollback is nice, and it sucks if it’s not great for anybody else wherever they live, all I know is my connections are mostly good, so I’m having fun”. And these are people who would normally champion rollback in everything (and have done it for over a decade). Turns out that for some, when they complained about Japan being behind the times and only caring about their games functioning online within Japan, it was never about making the game playable for everybody across the world. It was just about making the game playable for themselves.

I don't agree with him on the absorption netcode being good, but he at least doesn't sugarcoat it and admits that rollback would have been the ideal solution and he respects and understands (especially as someone who loves in the middle of nowhere and thus would benefit greatly from it) the feelings of those who decide to skip the game due to it lacking rollback. I am asking because I am starting to think that there is a difference between implementing post production on 2D sprite based games, post production on a modern 2D game, and implementing in a 3D game. I mean, am I the only person who didn't expect this VF game to have roll back? Some people seem to be acting like they are shocked VF5 doesn't have it....I don't get it. It's also valid to note that, while idk if VF does it, I don't play it, and I think it might not from what people say, if you have the game basically ran on a dedicated server, you theoretically can just have a good connection to the server and, no matter how shitty your opponent's internet is, it'll not ruin your experience, just like what people do with Parsec hosts. But then you'll get two people who are going to have different levels of delay which can be both a small problem if it's 1 frame, and a huge one if it's like, 5.
