Electrician here with hopefully a helpful tip. The capacitor function on a multi meter measures the time to charge a capacitor, if a cap reads high it can actually mean the cap is leaking current internally (takes longer to charge) and has in fact failed.
@PimpMyPc89
@PimpMyPc89 3 года назад
To add: Bleed down resistors have the same effect, and I assume the one on the start cap in the video was contributing to the high reading. Unfortunately they're usually soldered in so rooftop testing becomes a bit of a hassle.

Start relay?? The start and run caps are just part of the circuit. So many times the start relays contacts are so pitted, the start cap won’t electrically be in the circuit. If you can’t disassemble the relay to inspect, use amp clamp around one of the start cap wires to verify current flow. It’s not fun replacing a compressor for a misdiagnosed electrical problem…

Good point. I still had one where I found the start relay going bad and put in a universal but next day the compressor died, of course on the weekend and there was no replacement compressor in the area. After replacing compressor, system flooded back bad from just the drawers, adjusted one of the txv and got it under control and now they keep freezing up their coils with not closing the drawers. What can you do at that point except telling them they need to close the drawers.

Great video as usual bro and I don't think I've ever disagreed with any of your techniques before but something I see you do in most videos while brazing I'd like to give you some advice on, while brazing,soldering, you want to heat as well as braze from the bottom to the top. Heat rises as you know so when you start on the bottom the heat rises to the top of the fitting so once you get the bottom hot enough to flow, it takes very little heat to bring that flow up and around the fitting to the top, you can back your flame off once you start getting towards the topside, doing it the opposite way, you can actually overheat valves and such because your topside is already hot enough, then you go to the bottom and you heat it up even further. You will also notice better looking braze joints as the metal isn't heated up as much so there will be less discoloration. Especially on vertical joints, you'll be amazed that you've been doing it backwards all this time lol. Sorry bro but I just wanna help you out, you're a great tech. Thanks for the videos

Rope and hose management...oh we're so much alike...probably if you look up OCD in the dictionary you'll probably see both of our pictures! ;-) You might consider getting a Peak Co. Equivalent Series Resistance (ESR) meter to double check electrolytic caps as they may show the correct capacitance value but have a high ESR (read that as bad). I gave my HVAC buddy one and he uses it all the time to check run caps on the residential systems he services. Thanks for another great video Chris!

Did you check that potential relay? Chances are the contacts were burnt and pitted, which can cause the compressor not to start and even trip the breaker. Carry a small metal nail file to clean the contacts. If other components are acceptable, you can at least see if the compressor will start and run. If it will run and check ok, then you can return with new components. A starting cord also comes in handy to check a compressor with bad starting components. Your rope hook is awesome. One way I lower everything down is to have a rope at least twice as long as your drop, lower it down, let go of one end of the rope and pull it up empty. Just make sure loose end won’t snag on something. Easy way to do it when you have to lower all that equipment!

Kitchen production workers are a pain in the ***. I just tell them the worst-case timeline and let them deal with it. Honestly, if the production is so damn critical they need to install backup freezers & coolers. On my favorite freezer install, I was able to use a dual condensing unit with a dedicated evaporator for each. Each is about 80% of the -10f load. This has paid for itself a dozen times. A single unit can hold the box @ 20f for as long as needed to repair the other unit.

I have a 9' umbrella for shade when I have to be on the roof for an extended period of time. Use the ropes to tie it off on 3 points because the wind will blow it over. $30 for the umbrella and the base is $20 at Academy. Not a roto lock fan. Just more potential places to leak. txv needs to be adjusted if it's flooding back. I will take at least 3 ropes. I like the hook idea. A link would be great. Did you run an acid test on the old compressor? Those type of coolers either leak on the evaporator, flex lines behind the unit or pressure control. You never have to evacuate a system for a bad pressure control. Just pinch off the cap tube. Get a 1/4" male flare coupling, 1 flare nut a piece of 1/4" tubing. Flare the tubing and install the coupling. take your pinch offs off of the cap tube and shove it thru the tubing and out thru the coupling several inches. Reapply your pinch offs. crimp the 1/4" tubing on to the cap tube. very low flame and solder the cap tube to the 1/4" tubing. use the edge of the file and score the cap tube about 1" where it is sticking out of the coupling and break it off. Now quickly connect your 1/4" flare nut form your new pressure control. If it's the low pressure I let it go to pump down so the pressure is inly about 5 to 10 psi. If it's the high side I let the unit get to temp, shut it down and equalize the system and most of the pressure will run to the evaporator and you will have a low high pressure. Your soldering process should go very fast no time to dilly dally.

I had a single-phase 18 month-old Russell condenser for a walk-in cooler just do this exact same thing 2 weeks ago, but it was just the start relay. Swapping a relay first seems like an easy/cheap test to execute before condemning a compressor. Not sure that was done here? My unit would pull locked rotor current and trip breaker. Original installer came out, said it was a failed compressor and $2400 to replace. I had a hard time believing that a nearly-new unit failed, so I looked at it myself, swapped out the start cap (bad/open) and the relay and it then worked perfectly. I cracked open the bad relay and one of the contacts had it's rivet loosened up a good 1/8" and it could make partial contact even when open, so the start cap wasn't always being completely taken out of circuit, which eventually blew it up. I am not even an HVAC/R tech but I managed to properly diagnose and repair my issue for under $50, so my service company either has moron techs or were just trying to take me for an expensive ride? Either way, they are now fired; can't trust them. In the case of this vid, a good start cap paired with pitted relay contacts could also result in a compressor not starting even though the cap might see some trivial current through the relay - still enough to heat up the cap, but not enough to spin up the rotor.

Gotta get me one of those hooks. I seem to find getting my equipment up to a unit to be probably in the top 5 biggest pains in the ass about this job.

Use the coolpressor on the recovery tank. Very nice work by the way👏, the blow off safety on the receiver seems to be on its way out.

I'd be willing to bet you probably still have the leaks you thought you had in that system. Zach Psioda has a couple of videos on how easily an evaporator with two or even three or more leaks will still pass a tightness Test on one of those manifolds and achieve and hold a decent vacuum. It blew my mind. After watching that, I started always pulling every system down as far as I reasonably could instead of writing off the ones I knew had leaks after I got past 1000 microns. Hope your daughter had a good birthday! Later Chris!

Almost all kitchens iv cooked in its our under counter fridges that leaks . But also we have no a/c in none of our Canadian kitchens lol so I'm sure a lot of our equipment work on over load

Great video as always! You measured the startcap with resistor in place probably thas why you got a high value. I have a friend whos meter shows the real value with a resor in place, mine does not. Greetings from Sweden.
