I Switched From my MacBook to iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard for a Month

For the longest time, I’ve used a laptop as my personal choice for entertainment, answering emails, getting work done, editing videos, and the most important one, watching RU-vid videos. That’s why for the most part, my ordinary base model ipad, was nice but was left collecting dust for periods at a time. But, this isn’t your grandma’s ipad. This is the 11in iPad Pro with magic keyboard, and it replaced my precious MacBook for over a month. Learning curve aside, was it worth the switch?

Using only the iPad Pro and magic keyboard as my go-to device was really interesting. And you would think, the iPad would be less comfortable than a laptop to use on a desk, but for the most part it feels exactly the same. And because the iPad is “floating”, if you compare the iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard, with a 13in MacBook at the iPad’s max tilt, you’ll find the screen reaches the same height, meaning it wouldn’t add any extra strain on your neck or back to look at it. I also found that in some areas it was more comfortable to use the iPad Pro, such as in bed, and just using it in a chair or sofa, because, while the magic keyboard provides you a decent writing experience, you may forget this is an iPad + a case, so you can still remove it and use it like an iPad.
Writing on the iPad Pro and Magic keyboard is fine. The last 3 videos I’ve put up on my channel have all been scripted and written on this setup. And it did it just fine. Thanks to the extra port provided by the magic keyboard, you can charge the iPad and plug in your SD card to import your clips straight onto the iPad. From there. I used LumaFusion, a robust NLE for ios. This could get the editing job done for most RU-vidrs. Editing 4K video is smooth with no hitches, it has most of the bells and whistles I had when I was using Final Cut Pro, it supports external monitors, and it even has the ability to export the current project you’re working on into a FCPX project file. Meaning you can start your project in Lumafusion, and finish it off on any Mac. Just note that that’s an additional paid add-on, there are some limitations with it, and I do feel like I’m a bit slower editing on LumaFusion. But that may be because I’m so used to where everything is in FCPX and not LumaFusion. It’s highly do-able, and in my opinion, surpasses the 4K editing experience I had on the 2020 i5 MacBook Air, and overall very useful.
As for making thumbnails, the Apple Pencil in Affinity Photo, a photoshop alternative, gets the job done better than if I was doing it on my MacBook with the Trackpad using the same app. Using the Apple Pencil made editing my thumbnails a breeze, that just couldn’t be done well with a trackpad. Some apps work great with iPad OS’s splitview and slide over such as Apple’s built in apps or most of Google’s suite of software. But some apps just plain don’t work with that functionality meaning you’re forced into only full screen mode with those apps. When split view and slide over does work the other 90% of the time? It’s comparable to a laptop multitasking experience.
But, IPad OS doesn’t have as many professional grade apps that Windows or Mac OS has. I think the iPad Pro and magic keyboard could replace laptops for 90% of people. For many people around me, who aren’t as tech savvy, it already has. The truth is, it’s pretty easy to learn iPad OS for many people because it’s so similar to another thing that already sits in our pockets. But for people who need specialized software that runs only on desktop operating systems this isn’t it. The price of an iPad Pro and magic keyboard is pricier than apple’s MacBook Air. And if you opt for the 12.9in iPad Pro and magic keyboard, you could easily afford a MacBook Air and a new basic ipad.
The iPad Pro is a fantastic tablet. But if you already own a laptop you can buy a regular iPad or a Pro, and skip the $300 keyboard altogether, since you already have a device to get your typing-required tasks done. This is for someone who wants ultimate portability and doesn’t mind the minor trade offs. Personally, I’m now using it for work trips so I can get some RU-vid work done, without overloading my luggage. Overall, I’m really impressed with how suitable of a laptop replacement it can be. But do understand by going this route, there are some minor trade-offs that can make or break the experience.

As a student, I found making the switch purely beneficial. One of the main factors was something you didn’t mention - the ability to take notes and do all kinds of schoolwork on the iPad using the Apple Pencil!

@@kimcruz3889 If you want to write, draw or do photo editing, the tablet + keyboard can be a good choice. All the people I know who do tattoo's or are illustrators, they love the tablet to do that work. If you want do work with After Effects, the hardware of the tablet will reach a limit quite fast. But even on my macbook pro of late 2013 with 10 gigs ram, After Effects is still very limited whenever I go to 3D.

Can't wait to get my iPad Pro in a few weeks. I really was torn between that and a 13" MBP. But the versatility and power in that form factor is something I've really been drawn in by. I read a comment that really resonated with why I loved the iPad Pro: "I'd rather have a device that's 90% laptop and 100% tablet than a device that's 100% laptop and 0% tablet". I'm not dissing laptops because there is DEFINITELY a place for them. For some people, I'd definitely tell them go the traditional route. But to pack that much power in the form factor of a spiral notebook... That's crazy.

I also don’t mind gaming on the iPad i use my xbox one controller for dead cells, GTA San Andreas,and Apple Arcade has legit great titles. I also don’t get hung up on the app selection. The App Store has an app for everything trust me. I think a lot of peoples are just trapped by dogma in that sense the iPad can do pretty much “anything” maybe not in the most efficient way but nonetheless.

As someone who travels constantly for work... tzuten I’m not sure this is a valid argument. People give Apple either too much crap or too much credit. But while you may be correct that the iPad with magic keyboard is a similar weight to the MacBook Pro, the fact of the matter that no one seems to acknowledge is that with the iPad you have choices. It’s a modular device. You don’t NEED a keyboard. You don’t NEED a stylus. You don’t NEED a mouse. You can use these things when they are convenient to you and add to the user experience for whatever you are doing. But you can opt for just a tablet and still have a good user experience. Based on your comment about not liking touch screen or pencil use, I’m not sure why you even bought the iPad. I’m pretty sure if you told anyone that you were only planning on using the iPad without any of the intended functionality and only with a keyboard, they’d all tell you to get the MacBook or MacBook Air for the same price, because getting the iPad and not using it as an iPad is pretty stupid foresight and hindsight

They are amazing but not worth going without a computer for most people because inevitably you will need to plug in a usb drive, or move around large files, or any number of reasonable and simple tasks which are artificially crippled to force you to buy both devices. Amazing to use an iPad for 90% of normal tasks, but totally impossible to do inevitable and simple computing and office tasks.

I'm really wanting to convert from my MacBook Pro (2018) 13" to an iPad Pro 11". Currently using my old iPad Mini 2. Things my iPad does better than my MacBook (for how i use it) - Streaming videos to the TV. iPad does it seamlessly, touch the Chromecast button, done, magic. iPad has more variety of streaming apps, from mainstream App Store apps to 'you know what' apps. Mac to Chromecast (i had to end up mirroring the whole display, and used a websites video and it was laggy af) - Playing games. iPad can play Pixel Pokemon & Duel Links. Mac can play Pixel BUT NOT Duel LInks, scrolling the mouse and clicking everything doesn't feel as easy as touching a screen with my finger. - Location iPad is always in my room or the lounge, as its just a home button click and a touch away from something Mac is barely ever in the lounge, times I did have it there, but seemed to just place it under the couch after realising it is tedious af to do what the iPad is good at (streaming to TV). - Ad Blocking I go to a website daily on both MacOS and iOS. MacOS the website has the pop up everytime "oh no we realise ur blocking our ads, please uninstall adblocker, so we can keep this site up and running blah blah yadda yadda". iPad visits this site with, the website doesnt care about the adblocking, hooray. Things my MacBook does better than my iPad - Downloading Music, putting it in iTunes then syncing it to my Apple Devices Music App looking nice and tidy inside an album, numbered in order. iPads (from what i know) cant do this, unless you do it the legitimate way and purchase said songs from iTunes/Music or stream music on Spotify etc. The lamest way to do this, is download the mp3s to your Files app and listen to the song from there with no way to listen to em in order, on shuffle etc. Only way to make up for this would be buying a cheap windows laptop....

I love my 11in iPad Pro and MK, I have a 27in iMac AND a asus gaming laptop(I ONLY use it for gaming, VR, and streaming) and I had the iPad Pro 2017, iPad Air 2, iPad 3, and I was there for the launch of the first iPad... I have always been a major iPad fan, but it was mostly used when I’m not home... but this new 2020 11IPP with Mk and Apple Pencil has for the first time been my “every” Device! I use it for video editing, web browsing, media viewing, and MORE! I still use my iMac but iPad is now used 95% of the time! I use it as a tablet, laptop, and desktop with a HUB- it’s so amazing! it’s not perfect(needs thunderbolt 3, and 2 of them like iMac air), and so on. 9.5 out of 10! I super recommend it especially if you are out and about more, it’s way more portable then my laptop 👨🏾‍💻

The problem using Ipad as my primary computer is, despite having epic hardware, the ipad has very limited use cases. I am an avid MS office user, and the only way I can see myself using MS office apps in ipad is by opting to Microsoft 365 subscription which in my opinion is expensive (plus it has bunch of features like 1TB onedrive storage space which is not very useful to me.) I wish Microsoft introduces an one time purchase office copy same way they do for Windows and MacOS. Another thing is, majority of software which I used which are freely and easily available on Windows and MacOS are not available on ipad. It's disappointing to see such a masterpiece of a product with classy design and best hardware just used by content creators and apple ecosystem users for videocalls and stuff.

The size of the iPad Pro did nut get much attention. (?) Let me add to that: I have chosen for the 12.9 inch version and the Magic Keyboard. I do have a MacBook Pro of 2010 with a SSD, but this is so much better. Why? 1. It is more fun on the Pro. A lot of apps, if not liked, throw them off. Try that on a MacBook... it will get sluggish.. 2. It’s so blazing fast. 3. Gorgeous screen, the 12.9 has a more AWESOME factor than the 10.2 inch. Photos and videos are great. 3. The Keyboard finishes it off. Very good and with keyboard lighting. 4. It’s so versatile. I will take this on my holidays, I never did that with my MacBook Pro. Just only useful for Google Maps and Tripadvisor. Oh, and I did get a 4G version, so on holidays, I can throw in a cheap sim card. No WiFi needed on a deserted spot :-) Go ahead, buy it, you will not regret it, as iPad OS has so much improved with dual screens, external monitor, multi tasking, mouse and trackpad support. Great! Thanks for the review!

I have an old Macbook Pro (circa 2013 model) and the reason why I haven’t upgraded recently nor do I feel the need to upgrade is truth be told due to my iPad. It really is for me an all around tool for work (I work in IT so its mostly emails, MS teams and documentation), media consumption and some creativity work done. (Don’t use it for games I prefer the Switch for that) so yeah it depends ok your workload. Sometimes I do some video editing as well and I find that the iPad and Magic keyboard setup is very ideal for me. My advice to those people considering this setup. Think about what you really need. There is no one gadget fits them all scenario but like Jimmy said, the iPad might be the one that checks most of your boxes. My iPad is the 11 pro model (not the latest one) with 256GB storage wifi only plus Magic Keyboard and I am very happy with it

Isaac RU-vidr’s don’t think that everyone does video editing, it’s just what they do and what they use their iPads for. They make reviews based in their personal experience and how ‘they’ would use such a device. Although I do see what your trying to say in that people with “office-work” oriented professions would use an iPad differently than compared to how a RU-vidr would, therefore reviews should try to cover this aspect or maybe try to touch on it as majority of people don’t do video-editing as their main work.

Great video! I had a MB pro 2010 15’’ and this year it is no longer working well, shutting down too often. Sooo instead of buying a new one and a display graphic tablet for illustrations, I replaced it with iPad Pro. I don’t regret a thing!! It is smooth and I can draw better than on my laptop, also I only had a tablet without display. But oh gosh! Procreate is perfect, I edit with Snapseed and do heavy art video process with lumafusion. I can draw while watching tv series and looking on Pinterest for reference from the same device. I honestly don’t know what can I ask more. Oh and I forgot: I can do all of that everywhere for its portability. If you are an artist wannabe, and have an high budget don’t be afraid of making this leap of faith.

There are some things I, as a graphic designer and web developer, just can’t do on the iPad that are integral to my work. It’s a limitation caused mostly by lack of software/apps, or limitations within those apps on iPad. For example, I was really excited when a full Photoshop app came out, but I can’t edit a lot of my older files because it doesn’t support all the bells and whistles of the desktop version. So to edit those I have to go back to the Macbook or desktop, which really sucks. Previously editing Ai print ready files was out of the question on iPad, but now Illustrator has been released for iPadOS, but same issue as Photoshop, can’t edit my existing files. Now I’m begging for InDesign for iPadOS, as I do a lot of magazine layouts, but am wondering if I’ll have the same issues there. And coding... yeah I have to fiddle around with 5-6 apps to accomplish what I can do with one on desktop. So while the device itself can probably handle what I need, unfortunately as far as apps go, it’s just not ready for me to use it exclusively. I hope one day it will be. It will be a glorious day indeed.

I can't believe anyone who knows anything about computers would choose an iPad over a proper computer. The Macbook will see roughly 4 to 5 MacOS updates in its lifespan, each of those will continue to see security patches for 2 to 3 years, after the initialt OS release.. This means the Mac will see software support for a minimum of 10 years. Once Apple drops support, the user has the option to run Windows or can at least attempt to run Linux. Conversely, Apple will support the Ipads for about 4 to 5 years. Once Apple drops software updates, your only alternative is to buy another iPad. That's why the iPad is a horrendous long term investment. I can't take these comparisons seriously. Additionally, the iPad doesn't play well with many VPN Services... they constantly disconnect and hardly function on the tablet. No offense....but anyone who chooses ANY iPad over a traditional laptop is getting far less for their money and is getting ripped off, especially when considering the "Pro" models are priced higher than many laptops, and this is prior to purchasing alll accessories the user will need in order to attempt to use it as a laptop replacement....at that point, I'd even say you'd be better off buying a Chromebook.... You get 8.5 years of support and security updates from manufacture date, a built in keyboard, and far better port selection out of the box, all for far less of your hard earned cash.
@AzzaNekova
@AzzaNekova 4 года назад
Not everyone sees their gadgets as a long term investment. Some people just buy things they enjoy using for as long as they work. iPad has a respectable lifespan anyway. My Mini2 from 2013 got 5 years of full OS updates and received a dot one just days ago. And that's for the tablet tech in its infancy. I can see current Pros lasting longer with the kind of power they have. Do MacBooks remain useful for longer? Generally yes, but they generally cost a bit more as well. Do laptops offer more power and flexibility? Definitely. But not all users are after that. If an iPad can do few things they need to do in a way they find easy and enjoyable, why should they worry about things it can't do? Also iPads bring to the table some things MacBooks aren't capable of, Apple Pencil and one handed usage, for example. And that makes them a very interesting option for a laptop replacement when neither device is good enough to replace your desktop.

As a piece of hardware my iPAD Air 4 is awesome. Magic Keyboard makes it a legit laptop replacement.. No. I have to use MS Office and the IPAD implementation is utter garbage. I like to use Lightroom but the mobile implementation is crippled. The lack of true external display support is a huge miss. So without doubt the platform is well capable, but the real world use is just not there because the apps ain’t good enough. Unless you really have a pencil based use case. Buy a MacBook Air.

Meanwhile my laptop, even though it can barely hold my workload anymore, the battery health is still very good and it still works so far, so I'm gonna wait for another year. And I opted to an iPad pro bc I like it when I can sync my work on different devices also for entertainment, and also I can afford it now (I think if people can't afford the pro should really think about buying cheaper option, you don't have to buy the pro if you don't really need it). I usually don't rush myself to upgrade my gadgets, including my phone. So even though it seems like I have a lot of gadgets, I can actually afford it bc I only upgraded after it's been 5+ years 😅

I plan to use my iPhone to take pictures of client's server rooms for data center builds, then move them over to the iPad Pro for notes (with the Apple Pen) during the whiteboard discussions, then at home, do my Data Center design work on the iMac. I chose the Intel based iMac because I need to use bootcamp to switch to Windows as I have a few programs that require a PC to run. I can MS remote (and I think you can do that with the iPads, haven't tried it though), but it's a tad slow. Text based work you can probably add that to your iPad Pro work flow if you need to port into Windows should be okay but not ideal.
