ABOUT VIDEO:
Hey Afrodisiacs! In today's video I talk about my experience using ApHogee's Two Step Protein treatment for almost 1 year and the differences I've noticed with my hair. While I feel that ApHogee's Protein Treatment has helped my hair with definition, it has been a struggle with moisture/protein balance because the treatment leaves my hair very strengthened for a very long time which means I have to be careful about using other products with protein in them. Also, I've noticed a drastic change in my hair in terms of shine. Prior to ApHogee, my hair had a lot of shine. Nowadays, my hair looks dull even on day 1 when it should look the most shiny. I'm making changes to my regimen and swapping out this protein treatment for something that is less intensive to see if that makes a difference. My guess is that the protein treatment was causing somewhat of a protein overload in my hair and that's why it has been so dull/dry looking in recent months. I hope this video was helpful. I agree that Aphogee is only supposed to be used if your hair is incredibly damaged. It IS a treatment after all, and if you use a treatment as strong as Aphogee when your hair doesn't need it, it's going to be detrimental in the long run because your hair doesn't need it, especially if your natural hair is already insanely healthy.
@AfroKhadisiac
@AfroKhadisiac Год назад
I completely agree Jasmine. It’s very different from a hair mayonnaise or any other protein treatment that I’ve used before. I think the damage becomes noticeable over time if the hair doesn’t really need something as strengthening.
@officialsyddinpretty
@officialsyddinpretty Год назад
Completely false. Treatments should not simply be used as a repsonse to damage. They should be used to PREVENT damage and minimize it's effects when it inevitably takes place.
@Jasminesim18
@Jasminesim18 Год назад
@@officialsyddinpretty i dunno i heard that it doesn't prevent anything, it only repairs which is why it's called a TREATMENT. for example, you can constantly use this treatment but then if you decide to put heat on your hair and somehow end up frying it, this treatment couldn't have prevented it from happening. however, if you use it afterwards, it can help TREAT the damaged hair.

You have to be very careful with aphogee two step. I only use it every 9-12 months , because it is a HARD protein treatment. It continues to build the structure of your hair even months after doing the treatment. So doing it every month will give you a protein overload. Which will make your hair very brittle, lack luster. Try using a curl bonder (curl smith) if you want a treatment Or a protein conditioner. Wish you luck 💕. Try steaming your hair next deep condition ( not on too high of heat). Your hair looks good! So don’t stress too much. Ignore protein for the next few washs
@AfroKhadisiac

Thank you sooo much!! Your comment makes me feel like everything will be just fine lol. 💕 Yes to the steamer! The last time I got protein overload, I used a hair steamer and my hair bounced back relatively quick. I will definitely do that for the next few washes!

I find that there's a misconception that High Porosity = Damaged hair and Low Porosity = Healthy hair. I'm Low porosity and Protein sensitive and you're basically experiencing what I experience when even use small amounts of protein. A lot of Low porosity people have this same realization after using too much heat, steam, deep conditioning too long etc and likewise High Porosity people have the realization after getting dull / hard hair using too much Protein and Sealants - The healthiest state is more of a "balance" and we have to figure out which products nudge us towards the medium porosity.

Afope Atoyebi has a RU-vid video addressing how to fix protein overload that I found to be quite helpful and informative. While the Aphogee 2 Minute Reconstructor was a once every few months staple in my high porosity hair routine, I notice a gravely unfavorable difference in the feel of my hair after my first and only time using the aphogee two-step protein treatment. Although I have not experienced significant damage, breakage, or changes in texture, I immediately halted the use of all protein after that. It’s been maybe six months, and my hair is feeling more and more “normal” with every passing wash. All that said, thanks so much for the transparency as we’re all learning from and through each other. 💜

As others mentioned definitely sounds like you have protein overload. Your hair is already healthy. Aphogee is to be used as needed or as a strength boost. I have fine, high porosity, thick, mid back length hair. My hair loves Aphogee. Only use about every 3 months (1x monthly is too much for our hair). I wouldn't give up on Aphogee as it's a great product. However, I would just limit use on hair to avoid protein overload. I also like to alternate between a moisture and protein deep conditioners every week which has helped my hair tremendously. Your hair still looks amazing and can be saved. Enjoy your content and keep up the great work ❤️

Hey, Afro Khadisiac this hair thing gets tiresome some times so I feel ya pain! Good thing is there's always help around 😊 As a fellow high porosity gal, I highly, recommend incorporating a bonding product like Olaplex or Curlsmith's bond curl rehab salve into your washday routine for as long as necessary. Essentially it is a prepoo treatment that works wonders from the get go 👌 imo, the curlsmith is a little bit more moisturising so is my personal favourite (but both work well). Would love to see u try it out and give us a little update cos your videos are great and have helped me loads in the past ❤. Good luck 🤞🏾

Hey Jenny! OMG, you can say that again LOL. You would think that I've got this natural hair thing down after 10 years, but no. I still get setbacks here and here.🤣 Thank you for the product suggestions! I've heard great things about Olaplex, but I'm honestly very confused on what kind of product it is. I heard that it's not exactly a protein treatment so I'm like, what is it then? lol. I think I will stick with a regular protein treatment for now, but it's good to know there's alternative options out there.

Either way, I'm sure you'll do what you need to do and we'll soon see videos of ya hair bouncing right back! Can't wait😘👌🏾

@AfroKhadisiac Год назад
Hmm it says every 4-6 weeks which is why I used it monthly. I realize now that this treatment is really only for those with very damaged hair and even then the use should be monitored until healthy hair is achieved.
@chocolate82467

I agree. The 2 step should not be used monthly. It’s actually recommended for severely damaged hair and a deep moisturizing conditioner used after. It sounds like you have serious protein overload. Baby your hair with deep moisturizing treatments for a while, then when your hair feels normal again, maybe introduce the 2 minute. For healthy hair, the two minute is good. It’s a lighter protein treatment. I use it either weekly or every other week, depending on how my hair feels and I always use a moisturizing conditioner.

When its a 2 phase treatment it probably means phase 1 is alcaline and phase 2 is necessary to balance the ph level. Something alcaline in my opinion will always damage the hair. (Sry if I made any language mistakes)
@AfroKhadisiac
@AfroKhadisiac Год назад
Your language is fine! I understand your comment perfectly. I never thought about the alkaline and acidity of this product. It's definitely an intense treatment though so I feel like it's capable of damage if misused or overused.
@moyin282
@moyin282 Год назад
I know a lot of comments have already mentioned this but I just wanted to add - most natural hair professionals I've seen have mentioned that aphogee is too strong (and as someone else already mentioned, only for incredibly damaged hair) and regular deep conditioners have enough protein for upkeep (they even mention that opting for protein treatments in general will ruin hair that doesn't need it). What I really wanted to add was that deep conditioning with moisture only softens the hair (from what I know, the moisture "binds" to the protein) but it doesn't get rid of the protein. Since protein forms a "protective" barrier around the hair what you may need is more shampooing. Maybe also consider clarifying more often (obviously not weekly but just increasing the frequency) and using an all-purpose shampoo before a moisturizing one.
@moyin282
@moyin282 Год назад
A lot of the other recommendations would be good for high porosity hair in general but right now you probably need something that treats your specific condition. Also there's a bit of confusion concerning the whole porosity topic. Apparently it's quite rare that someone is actually born with high porosity hair and people usually become high porosity due to some damage (manipulation, chemical treatments, "protective" styles, etc). It's worth noting that a lot of the characteristics attributed to "low porosity" hair in the natural hair space are actually just symptoms of (sometimes severe) product buildup. And also that hair doesn't have to be in one of the extremes, most people are medium porosity. This was a lot of talk but basically all I'm trying to say is that your hair doesn't have to be high porosity just because it isn't experiencing the low porosity (product buildup 🙃) symptoms, you hair may just be healthy. Highly porous hair usually just needs the protein to mask the damage.

I'm glad that you posted this! I literally just started using that aphogee protein treatment 4 weeks ago and I was planning to use it again for my upcoming wash. But maybe I should wait another 2 weeks to avoid something like that from happening. I know another high porosity youtuber and she actually uses it every 6 weeks. I'm 4 weeks in my new natural hair care routine so I don't really know how my hair reacts to things yet. Last month before I started washing my hair weekly, I was flat ironing it so much for job interviews that I think aphogee protein treatment will still be useful for my hair until it's at a healthy state. Plus I'm trimming monthly. Your hair is definitely healthier with they you take care of it so I agree aphogee might be doing more harm than good. Or you could do every 6 weeks instead. Never the less, I'm sure those other products will be more beneficial with the way you want to use it. I wish I could of tried that nothing but intense healing mask! Thanks for sharing your hair journey and I can't wait for more! :)
@AfroKhadisiac
@AfroKhadisiac Год назад
Hey Bklyn! Honestly, I would suggest starting out with a medium strength protein treatment (e.g. ors hair mayonnaise, curl junkie repair me). Those are protein treatments that have moisturizing ingredients in them, so they're not nearly as intense as aphogee. If you feel like those aren't doing it for your hair, then you could opt for something stronger. I say this because if you use aphogee and your hair is relatively healthy (similar to mine) it might do more harm than good in the long run. The nothing but intense healing mask was another amazing medium strength protein treatment. I wish it wasn't discontinued, but we have a few options! I hope this helps ❤️❤️

The 2 step is targeted towards those that bleach/dye/relax their hair. It sounds like you were using it too often. You should only do a protein treatment when your hair needs a protein, if it's mushy, you see lots of breakage, split ends, no elasticity. Never as a regular part of your regimen. The package even says the treat.ent lasts 6 weeks...if you were doing it once a month, that's waaay too much

This treatment is too strong. When I understood that I regulated my application by once every 3-4 months. I don't even use the aphogee conditioner, I use a very moinstuzing conditioner of my choice because their conditioner has petrolatum and other ingredients that require sulfates to get rid of.

Thank you for watching Elizabeth! Your approach makes a lot of sense. It is much stronger than any other protein treatment I've used before, so I can see how spreading out applications could make a difference

The instructions say 4-6 weeks! I always do a protein treatment once every 4 weeks which is why I adapted that routine. How often have you been using it?

I thought I was imagining things when I use Aphogee. It makes my hair feel brittle and I have heat damage. Any alternative recommendations?

Oh wow. I'm sorry to hear that Tricia. So, you've been using it to recover from heat damage and it's making you hair feel brittle? How often have you been using it and for how long? I would suggest ORS Hair Mayonnaise or Curl Junkie Repair me. These protein treatments have moisturizing ingredients in them, so there's not as strong as aphogee.

Sucks that it didn't work for you. I've used it for 3.5 years on my high porosity hair. I think it failed for you due to improper protein-moisture balance. Specifically, protein overload (aka protein buildup) in your hair (hence that straw feeling). After applying the protein treatment, you shouldn't have deep conditioned. The instructions say only to apply the Balancing Moisturizer (BM), & after leaving it on for 5 minutes with a heated cap, that BM is usually all you need to get the hair treated just right. Deep conditioners also often contain protein in them or too much moisture. And too much moisture being put into the hair after a protein treatment can be disastrous for your hair bonds. When using Aphogee & other protein treatments, I've noticed a lot of people aren't careful about the other products among their stash that may contain protein in them; for example, Moisturizers with protein, shampoos, or products containing Keratin. Keratin is a kind of protein, & although it has its own form of treatment, I find the Aphogee protein treatment to be strong enough & versatile enough on its own to also boost Keratin in the hair. Therefore, I always worry people will use multiple kinds of protein treatments (like Keratin) with Aphogee, which will hurt the hair badly. Since I can't be conscientious of EVERY product I'm using at a time, I clarify my hair once every 2 weeks to avoid buildup of various kinds. I like clarified shampoos (with sodium lauryl sulfate) b/c when done right, it can somewhat reset the hair & prevent buildups (protein, dirt, etc). I wash my hair once every 2 weeks. When I wash it, I clarify once or twice & then follow-up with a moisturizing shampoo & then a deep conditioner. But the trick is paying close attention to your hair. When I first started using Aphogee, I needed to treat my hair once a month like clockwork. As time passed, I noticed my hair only needing treatment once every other month. So you have to be paying close attention to your hair & the products you're using when doing your own treatments. Typically when people struggle with these treatment types, they need a professional to put them on a treatment regimen & to review their product stash, basically so they avoid overloading (imbalancing) their hair bonds. Glad you quit when you noticed the problem.

It could be overload OR theres some products you are using that have a protein treatment effect on your hair making it strong and the aphogee is possibly giving more protein on your strands.
@AfroKhadisiac

Hmmm, I haven't really used any products with protein, except for the aphogee line. I think The Doux Twisting Cream had protein in it, but I've been limiting the amount of strengthening products I use on my hair for the most day. My wash day typically consists of Miche cleansed shampoo (protein free), Miche indulge (protein free), kinky curly knot today (protein free) and yin handmade whipped pudding (protein free).

Firstly, porosity Is not a hair type. If your hair is on either extreme of the porosity spectrum, it's an indication of an imbalance in protein moisture. This product must be used with a PROPER deep conditioner. That is going to include SILICONES. Also, you MUST deep condition WITH HEAT. The issue is, respectfully, most consumers are ridiculously misinformed when it comes to hair. If you have no true understanding of what it is/what it needs, you will never truly develop a regimen that works. And I know you are an ambassador, but it MIGHT just be that conditioner 🤷🏽‍♀🤷🏽‍♀🤷🏽‍♀🤷🏽‍♀ Also, The moisturizer for the apogee two step is trash.

Aphogee 2 step treatment should not be used at the beginning of every month. It is a treatment and is to be used as only that which is not every month! I'm sorry 😞 but it sounds like protein overload. Please use moisturizing products to get that shine and softness back.

I know! I thought Apogee would be fine for my hair, but I think it ended up doing more harm than good. I should've made a video sooner but I was in denial about it possibly damaging my hair or giving it protein overload until my mom commented on my hair. I knew it had to be bad if she said something lol. Then the comparison pictures just confirmed it for me. I'm gonna see how my hair does without it starting next month

Your only supposed to use aphogee 2 step 2 times or once a year. Some people don’t need it at all. I used it for the first time and my hair felt great 🧁moist.
